[Hazel's been over to visit, so Maya's had enough time to see her around-- but not any time she's been making tea. This time, she is, and it's only customary to offer to your guests!]

[What was it-- Lockwood? She doesn't want to get it wrong. Hanging out the doorway, Maya further inquires--]

Would you like some tea?

[it takes her a moment or two to respond, mostly because even after a year Hazel still isn't used to people leveling polite tones at her. her head jerks up and over before she relaxes a little, flapping a hand awkwardly.]

Nah, it's fine. The other blockheads in the house need it more than me anyway.

[...It's Maya's instinct to consider the refusal rude, but she tries to remind herself that people here just aren't used to the same customs as her. But... refusing tea...!

[she makes a 'pfft' noise, like the just the idea by itself is ludicrous. which it is, because she doesn't deserve a goddamn microsecond of anyone's consideration, but it's not the kind of thing that you can say out loud.

so she falls in with her tried and true excuse, the lie a little clunky on her tongue. it's been a while since she's had to use it - but it's been a while since she's felt this disgusted with herself, too.]

I've got a lot of medical issues, so I can't have most things anyway. It's a lot easier for everyone to just not bother.

[Maya answers, shrugging.]

[Hazel's similarly seen Maya around on her visits, but she's usually so wrapped up in hanging out with Tetsuo (or avoiding her own thoughts) that she never really approached her or asked anyone what her deal was.

Kaneda brought me to me stay over for Christmas since I kinda got in a fight with my roommate? But I ended up staying to watch Tetsuo when everyone went back to Heropa.

[It's not a bad reason, so she has no problem answering.]

[a beat, and then she jerks a thumb behind her to indicate the front of the house.]

You know the door's over there, right? They don't lock it half the time, I can cover you.

[shitty as she's feeling, Hazel really needs a moment to make a terrible joke now more than ever. what better way than to teasingly imply someone else was being held against their will in a nuthouse?]

[Maya makes a sputtering sound as she covers her mouth, trying not to let out a laugh-- but the urge to break out in laughter is TOO MUCH. She giggles behind her palm, shaking her head.]

Don't worry, I'm really just here to play with Capsule!

That's how they get you. They drop an animal in the middle of shit that's so fucking cute you totally forget that it can fit out the door with you.

[she shakes her head sadly, the gesture over-exaggerated and dripping with theatrics. it's easy to fall back into this, especially when it elicits the right reactions.]
