[ Long ago (over two years ago, in fact), Kaneki arrived to this world; by then, he was a shy awkward boy, who wasn't able to get into confrontations and still held on to the idea that he was human regardless of being artificially turned into a ghoul. He also had black hair, which probably says a lot about the current Kaneki with white hair, generally depressed, generally menacing when he wants to be, and with far too many mental issues ~~Marie Antoinette syndrome~~.

To those who have known Kaneki since then, it might be even nostalgic (if not rather sad, because black-haired kaneki used to be a lot more normal), and to those who never had the chance, they will see what an awkward bookworm Kaneki used to be. Because that's exactly what he is right now, thanks to a certain scientist screwing things up.

His memories of being here are all so hazy, like dreams, and he has to wonder if this whole thing isn't one. He will go along with what he can, though, trying to adapt to the new place (because this is actually something Kaneki is surprisingly good at doing: adapting) ]
