You must realize by now that not everyone runs in the other direction when confronted with the prospect of you and commitment.

[ Miles flushes a bit at that, gentle embarrassment palpable over their link. ]

Well ... yes. Both special cases, though.

[vorbarra]

[ Equally gentle affection sent back to smooth it over. This is much easier to reference now that they've had things resolved between them. All of those muddled feelings aren't distant yet, but they are assuaged. ]

Isn't that how it should be? Special cases. [ You don't need everyone to say yes to every question, just one. ]

[dendarii]

[ Rejection still has a painful sting for Miles, though he finds the prospect of it less ... daunting, perhaps. Especially as he gets used to Gregor really being his, and vice versa. It's still all brand new. ]

As long as we have those, screw the rest of the world, eh?

[vorbarra]

[ He squeezes his hand under the table. ]

The rest of the galaxy, more like. Something to hold against the onslaught. [ Dyed in the wool, hopeless romantic, this one. ]

[dendarii]

[ Miles isn't any less so, happily. The mental image warms him right down to his soul. Quietly: ]

It'll take some getting used to. You've gone and changed everything.

Like you have any less so? [ he says wryly. ] I can't count the number of things I'm doing that I never saw myself engaging in.

[ He was just vociferously protesting a couple months ago that he didn't want to date anyone at all. ]

[dendarii]

And now here I am dragging you along? Dragging each other.

[ Out of view of the rest of the convention, he carefully slips an arm around Gregor's waist. ]

Mutual dragging, [ he promises. His voice drops, goes softer, both due to emotional content and not wanting to be overheard. ] I hope you're never given cause to regret agreeing to this.

[dendarii]

[ Miles' own tone drops to a murmur to match. ]

I can't think of anything in the world that could, Gregor.

[vorbarra]

[ Gregor can think of several things: Miles regretting agreeing to him staying with Kitty while they're together, or Lucifer using him against him, to start. He doesn't think Miles would value his own sacrifices highly enough to regret, but he also can't help but wonder if Aral wouldn't regret enough for him, if Miles were ever hurt badly in being used against him...

But there's no reason to say anything of this. There's a vague sense of drifting sadness over their mental connection, but no different or worse than Gregor often has at periodic moments throughout the day. ]

Sorry. I truly wasn't expecting to ever have something like this. [ So he can't help but wonder when he's going to lose it again, despite himself. ]

[dendarii]

[ Miles still tries to soothe it away with a flicker of his own light. Or rather, he sets up a lantern and invites Gregor to partake of it if he wants. He won't forget that Gregor needs space too, even now. ]

... So you're trying to brace yourself for when it disappears again? Or when it turns out to have been a mistake somehow?

[ No mistake on Miles' end. But - well, when he has irrational thoughts on the subject, that's where he ends up. ]

Ah. Good. All right, picture a three dimensional space compared to a plane. On a plane, or as you usually navigate the surface of a planet, you're dealing with coordinates in two dimensions. Going from point A to point B involves two axes.

When we involve flight, we're adding another dimension. And when there's flight away from your planet, you're effectively removing your reference point.

If I dropped you in the middle of an unfamiliar ocean on a ship, you couldn't tell me east or west without using the sun or stars. Like so in space; stars give us references on the third axis as well, that being up or down.

[Kel listens hard, thinking back to her lessons on graphs and trail markers. The word 'flight' finally brings to mind the picture of her sparrows in the air, and she slowly begins to smile and then nod.]

Oh, like...like a bird dropping off a tree to fly to one lower down. Only it could...avoid the pull to the ground because there isn't any ground?

[ There we go.

He nods encouragingly. ] Yes, the pull to the ground is called gravity. It affects everything, actually-- you exert some tiny gravitational pull yourself, but the mass of the Earth is so substantial it's completely lost in it.

[This also fits in with what the mages say about fields of energy so Kel nods again]

And....getting very far away from the ground means that there's less?

[vorbarra]

Exactly. The further you are from an object, the less gravitational pull it's exerting on you. Most of the time in space you're distant enough from all objects-- it's mostly empty-- that there's little to none.

[Internal shudder, that sounds terrifying]

What pushes the ships then?

[vorbarra]

Sources of propulsion, largely chemical. Like... mmm, are you familiar with fireworks at all?

[ Those had predated modernity by quite a bit, he's sure. ]

How about explosives? Like for mining?

[protects_the_small]

[Kel frowns, thinking back to the ogre mines she'd seen as a squire.

But no, they'd depended on their own muscle]

No....That sounds dangerous.

[vorbarra]

[ Ruefully, ] It is. But you are familiar with explosives? The propulsion used is something like that, released in controlled, directed bursts.

[ Close enough. ]
