Because Mark didn't want you to know. He wanted to be Peter, to be his own person. He deserved a chance to decide who he is.

I don't know. But I would think the decision to help after all of that may be a good indication.

... Be gentle with him, Miles. One of the biggest fears he had was you finding out and trampling all over him. To say he has an identity crisis is like saying five space math is difficult.

I - I can only imagine. He should have had a healthy body, but they warped him to match me. They must have.

They did. At one point, he mentioned they replaced his legs with synthetics in order to pass the scans as you.

And as far as I can tell, they only changed the physical proportions of his body, not his body functions. I caught it when we went out to lunch – he eats as if he was starving. He more than likely still has the appetite of someone who would be as tall as or taller than your father.

[ Miles winces at that ; he'd heard much the same from Mark about his bones, but it's no less horrifying the second time around. ]

I noticed that, but I didn't realize. I thought he just liked food.

You wouldn't have since you weren't aware of his situation.

[ It's not necessarily a criticism of Miles; she just knows he'd have been too self-absorbed to notice it or think beyond it. ]

I still should have been. He spent all this time here - all this time back home - he's my brother.

He is, as well as my son. But that's also his decision to accept it or not.

Why the hell wouldn't he? He's a Vorkosigan, dammit.

Only genetically. He's been raised to hate and fear Vorkosigans. That kind of severe indoctrination is difficult to overcome so quickly. Think of the last time he actually had a choice to choose who he is.

It's his decision, Miles.

[ He opens his mouth to protest again - and then quiets. That make an alarming amount of sense. ]

[ She lets out another long breath, turning her head slightly to breathe in Miles' hair. ]

I'd like for him to accept it, to accept us. But I'm not going to push him.
