5/30 aftermath OTA

[He'd stirred a couple of times before this. Annoyed into some basic state of consciousness by the blood pressure cuff, he'd groggily tried to get rid of most of the tubes and tape, earning a less than favorable reputation from hour one. It hadn't really gotten better from there.

When he did actually come up and stay up, it was with an alarming memory gap. He certainly didn't remember going to a hospital, or recognize which one it was. Or frankly, much beyond landing in the swamp and the patchwork first aid from Colonel Mustang and Ms. Rockbell. The stimulants he'd taken to keep going after the battle had to have worn off hard and faster than normal.

Even through the fog, persistent tattles of pain under medication, and confusion, the first thing he's doing is taking information from the whiteboard in the room, cataloging exits... And seems almost surprised to find a guest at the end of that sweep.]

Ah.

[ It had been a complete accident that had brought Miles to his father's bedside. With his legs healed enough to stump around awkwardly (and thank god for those casts being gone), he'd gone to go find Gregor's room on his own, insisting on his privileges as a family member. Thus one of the nurses had directed him to his actual family by mistake instead of back to the Emperor. He's about to protest - and then he sees who's in bed here.

Miles stands awkwardly at the doorway, still pale and drawn from the weekend but at least on his feet. His father is clearly not so lucky. Carefully, hesitantly, he approaches the bed and the man lying down in it. His voice is small and uncertain. ]

Da? When did you get here?

[ He hadn't been told, but - given everything that's been happening that doesn't say anything. When he hasn't been drugged himself, he's been at Gregor' side. ]

[He waves the question aside irritably.] You're up and walking... good, good. [The first has a note of relief, the second had determination.]

Help me get some of this off.

[dendarii]

[ A small flinch of annoyance - followed by an even stronger flinch of self-awareness. Dear god, is he about to be the one to try and talk sense into his father instead of the other way around? (Is this what it feels like when other people deal with him?) ]

You would have nurses down on you in a heartbeat if you took that off. Speaking from experience.

[ He comes to sit in the visitor's chair next to his father's bed, making no motion at all to help him. ]

[He only grunts in reply, expression screwed up in impatience. He nearly has the pulse ox off when attempting to reach across his chest causes him to stiffen, color draining dramatically from his face.

He lowers himself back very... very carefully and slowly.]

Well. That's still there.

[ Miles is torn between further guilt at his father's obvious injury - and a very satisfied "I told you so" kind of feeling. He settles somewhere uncomfortably in the middle of the two. ]

Which is exactly why you should stay in bed. At least until we get a healer in to take care of this ... incidental injury.

[ Said with a touch of wry, black humor. ]

[ Things are starting to calm down and now that Duv is finished with his tracking duties, he's being relegated to any last bits of healing that were held off in the flurry of activity of the previous days.

Which brings him to Admiral Vorkosigan's room. He would have thought 'high Vor' ranked farther up on the priority list for healing, but apparently not. Karma perhaps that he's being sent to heal the man known to many as the Butcher of Komarr.

He reverts to his training to maintain soldier-like professionalism as he enters the room and stands at a parade rest. ]

Sir. I heard you were injured.

[Propped up by several pillows, his color is not particularly anything resembling 'good.' Though what damage was suffered in the battle... it's hard to tell much other than there seems to be quite a bit of bandaging under the gown.

But his eyes are sharp and focused. He nods at Galeni.]

Ah. Come in. I wanted to speak with you.

[komarran]

[ He's not surprised to hear this and he gives the Admiral a nod. It's a conversation he can't avoid, he may as well get it over with. ]

Yes, sir?

[That edge of Imperial Decree and barely controlled rage were long gone. The face that gazed at him was lined with pain and settling into something of a morbid curiosity.]

I've heard your interim report. I require the full one.

[komarran]

[ Of course. He's already given the Emperor a brief, but more full one than he desired. It would stand to reason that Admiral Vorkosigan would require one of him too. ]

Starting from Miles coming into my command or our encounters with Mark?

[keep_nothing]

[ She waits until she knows that he's alone in his own room, certain that others are occupied elsewhere for the time being. She's standing by the door frame, having closed the door behind her for some relative privacy. ]

[He looks up as the door clicks shut, offering a rare moment of privacy in a hospital bedroom. Immediately, he seeks her eyes, searching for any trace of the earlier frost there.]

[keep_nothing]

[ No trace of it at all, only a calm worry, her own eyes darting over the bandages half-hidden by the sheets before she raises them to meet his eyes. ]

May I come in?

[use_everything]

[He beckons with one hand lifted above the covers.]

Please.

[keep_nothing]

[ She walks forward, taking his raised hand as she steps in close to his bed. When she's close enough, she leans down towards him, closing her eyes as she presses their foreheads together. With the angle and height she's at, her hair spills over her shoulders, forming a kind of curtain around their faces. ]

[Ed's been wandering the hospital trying to dodge the staff himself when he comes across Aral's room and ducks inside for a hiding spot. He wasn't really expecting Aral to be awake yet though.]

Uh... Did I wake you up?

[That IS the problem with the stubborn ones, they don't STAY down. There's a moment of deliberate focus, trying to make sure he IS seeing the young alchemist duck behind the wash stand...]

Don't let me interrupt.

[With permission given he goes right back to securing his hiding spot, shooting a wary glance at the door.]

Are your nurses going to be back any time soon?

With any goddamn luck, not until they discharge me.

[By the looks of him, that was wishful thinking.]

Probably have an hour... What did you get into?

I didn't get into anything! The orthopedic team just won't stop giving me shit about looking at my automail.

[It was bad enough dealing with machine geeks normally; he wasn't going to put up with it while he was exhausted now.]

[It's one of those statements. The kind where you're not sure exactly how grounded they are given the nature of pain and pain medication, and yet... suspiciously possible, given the subject.]

You might check the closet, he's been in there lately.
