[Except he hasn't even tried looking at anything in her mind yet, so... no. No he knows nothing.]

[It sure doesn't help. Instead, Yayoi takes a seat in one of the vacant chairs.]

I guess I'll just wait and see if you're right or not.

[Breathing out audibly, Tetsuo slouches further into the couch, halfway obscured by Kaneda's jacket. He starts in on the next level.

Pause.]

So what do you want?

[learntofly]

[She slumps comfortably in her chair, propping her head up with one hand and turning her attention to the TV to watch the game progress.]

Well, it'd be nice to know what your name is. Mine's Yayoi Nakayama.

[iamtetsuo]

Tetsuo.

[That's it. No family name.

He misses a jump early, dying horribly on spikes. Next death is shortly after, when jumping over the spikes and failing to remember to not keep going gets an enemy made of spikes falling on him.

This sure seems like a friendly game.]

[Friendly. Sure. It does seem like the kind of game she's used to her friends playing at least.]

So . . . You're one of Kaneda's friends? Or someone else's?

[iamtetsuo]

Yeah. [He stumbles over the acknowledgement. It feels so weird to say that... but - but it's kinda true. Maybe. Right? He's wearing the guy's damn jacket after all, accepted being under his emblem and all again.]

I'm- You could say I'm Kaneda's friend, I guess.

[It's the closest he's come to admitting anything approaching friendship in a long time. Excuse him, Yayoi, his friendship muscles are a little atrophied from dis and misuse.]

Oh, is that how it is? [Her smile is a knowing one. This kind of response is actually a familiar one. Though, admittedly, she's used to it being louder and followed with someone throwing a punch. A friendly punch.

But eh, close enough.]

It seems like he collects friends pretty easily.

[iamtetsuo]

Yeah. [Slouches even further, his tone taking a more bitter note.] He does.

[Yayoi, on the other hand, sits up a little straighter.]

You don't sound happy about that.

[iamtetsuo]

[Shrugs. Evades that stupid drop-down spike thing and shoots it repeatedly. It doesn't help; it just wanders aimlessly back and forth on the screen unharmed.]

[She's missing it entirely, still watching him quietly.]

. . . If it makes you feel any better, he's probably going to kick us out soon.

[Mostly quietly.]

Probably not.

[They're not the ones Kaneda's kicked out of his life this place, not that Tetsuo WANTED to be here, in the past. For all he can say they've made up, there's still that fear. And that memory. And the constant reminders that Tetsuo probably isn't what Kaneda ever really hoped he'd be, anyway.

So, sure. Kaneda's always been just fine with everyone else. They're probably just here now. Hell if Tetsuo knows what happened to this place in December.]

[She frowns. This isn't the sort of bitterness she's used to. Understand, sure, but dealing with it . . . that was going to be new ground.]

Well . . . Why do you think so?

[iamtetsuo]

If he hasn't kicked someone like me out, you guys are probably here forever.

[That checkpoint, there? That means, officially, he's never having to deal with that dump spike trap again. Saving games is awesome.]

Are you sure? There's no way you can be worse than Ikki-kun.

[iamtetsuo]

[Pause. She didn't know his name, that's understandable. But the fact there's no recognition once getting it, even connected to Kaneda..]


You're new here, so I guess you don't really know anything. Trust me.

[A long string of falling spike enemies, why. He's met Ikki by now, who, as far as he can tell, is just brash, annoying, and deserves to be thrown through a wall or something.

But Tetsuo... Yayoi has no idea.]

[She slumps over in the chair again, draping herself comfortably across the arms and fixing him with an unimpressed look.]

Well . . . even if I do, you're still here. So you can't be that bad.

[This is a cue for more video game playing. This time, it's death after death to his best friends, the invincible walking spikes that fall from the ceiling. Try to jump over the first few, and run into the third. Try to run for it, and fall into one of the pits. Work out timing on jumps over pits while avoiding the hellbeasts...

...game over.

He curses, starting the stage over again.]

[If it's video game time, she's content to watch. . . . While he dies. A lot.]

. . . Maybe you need to grind more.

Oh. [He looks thoughtful for a moment.] This doesn't really have levels..
