[Ed pauses when the hand comes down on his head, giving Jim a confused and startled look.]

It's—uh. It's sore, but it'll be fine. Winry's work is always great.

[Jim's already walking ahead of him by now and so doesn't catch the look.]

When we figure out where the hell we are, we'll get you to a healer.

She's a mechanic...where'd she learn how to do that?

[Sharply:] Winry patched it up already. I don't need another healer.

[He falls into step behind Jim as he talks.]

She's an automail mechanic. Doing the installation surgeries is part of that job. Her clients are all her patients too.

[overemotionally]

...It was fine during the fighting but you're sewn up like a piece of fabric. My best friend would have a fit.

[In fact, he's pretty sure Bones has ranted about this exact topic too--how barbaric surgery and older methods of physical repair used to be. But the refocusing of Jim's attention onto exactly how automail had to work...He'd never thought about the mechanics really. He looks back at Ed and makes a little shrugging motion, a suit yourself gesture.]

So wait...an automail mechanic is also a surgeon? And she's 16. How...?

[Ed just grins impishly and even shoots Winry a thumbs up.]

Because she's probably been studying medicine and machinery as long as I've been studying alchemy. She knows what she's doing.

[overemotionally]

[Jim only barely got an arm up in time to divert most of the swamp mud from hitting him square in the face. There's still a healthy amount that hits him near his ear.]

Eugh, seriously?!

[He shakes his arm out a couple of times then goes to work wiping at the side of his head, trying to get the grime away from his ear and out of his hair.]

Point being if you had a healer take care of it now you wouldn't have to worry about it becoming infected [A pointed glance towards the side of his head where there was now gunk as he wipes more away] or re-opening.

Geez...every teenager where you're from have this depth of technical expertise?

[Jim was a clever 16 year old himself, making trouble with his programming and mechanical skills, but medicine as advanced as that? No way. As primitive as it was by his own standards, it still required an understanding of human physiology and anatomy that he couldn't imagine knowing himself. Alchemy he couldn't even gauge fairly because...well, physics law-breaking and all that.]

I can keep it from getting infected by keeping it out of the water, and it won't reopen if I don't use it.

[Almost as if to prove his point he lifts his arm a little higher, resettling it carefully against his chest in the makeshift sling he's fashioned himself.]

No, most people are pretty average. The two of us and my brother though...and those guys from Xing too. But we're just a tiny handful out of countries of tens of millions of people.

[overemotionally]

And neither of those things would happen if the skin was intact. Post-healing.

[He rolls his eyes a bit, going to wipe at whatever's left of the swamp that stuck to his face.]

You have a brother? Is he here?

[Ed rolls his eyes.]

Look, if my automail surgery didn't kill me then there's no way something as minor as this is going to.

And no, he's not. You'd have met him already if he was.

[overemotionally]

I think you're underestimating microbes.

[Jim really really hopes that if Bones ever shows up here, he'll be here at the same time as Ed. He would have to find a chair and make popcorn for that meeting.

He frowns slightly.]

I don't make assumptions with siblings.

I think you're underestimating me and my surgeon.

[He huffs irritably, but his expression softens a little when the conversation turns back to Al.]

Al's the most important person in the world to me. If he were here, he'd be right here with me and Winry. Hell, he'd probably be giving me a worse time about my arm than even you are.

[overemotionally]

[That's...nice actually. Good to know there are functional sets of brothers out there somewhere. God knows he and Sam weren't. Aren't. It's been years since he's seen his brother.

His softened expression turns into a hint of a smirk though.]

Glad someone got common sense between the two of you.

—Just because he'd say the same thing doesn't make him right either!

[Now it's a full shit-eating grin.]

[Ed rewards him with a rather rude gesture.]

I am! Al's a year younger.

They say the younger learns from the mistakes of the older.

[He's not put off by the gesture, just laughs.]

[The sarcasm drips thick from his voice at that.]

So you've heard people telling you before that your brother might be right about taking care of yourself?

I'm taking care of myself now! I left the fight as soon as I got hurt, didn't I?

[The way he says that...sounds like that might be a new development for him.]

[Jim actually turns and starts walking backwards along the platforms he's still forming in mid-air so he can give Ed a Look.]

"Now" as opposed to before when you didn't?

[Ed shoots him an exasperated look.]

I don't usually have a medic on the field with me. Or the option to just retreat so easily.

[overemotionally]

What the hell kind of military are you in where you're in peacetime but you're getting hurt without a medic? And what are you doing that you can't retreat? Retreat from what?

[He grumbles irritably and looks around as if he thinks someone might save him from this conversation, but with Roy and Winry distracted tending to Aral there aren't many options.]

...The kind that's run by a government led by a monster that's centuries old. Me and my brother were the first ones to stumble across that bastard's scheme, so obviously we ran into a lot of trouble.

[Just enough of the truth to hopefully satisfy him without having to get into the full detail of it. That would be a long story.]

[overemotionally]

[Just by Ed's reaction, he can tell he stumbled into something. His flippant attitude turns more serious. There's a long pause though as he's trying to figure out which question to ask first.]

The whole government...holy shit.

[That sounds like a mess and a half.]
