I'm surprised. I would have believed more people to consider me weak for not ending my life sooner than it was dragged out. [A small part of her kind of wished she had too, but Kareen wasn't the type to dwell on regrets. At least, not most of the time.]

[ Miles falls silent for a moment at that. ]

[ He pushes his hand against his forehead. It's damp with sweat. ]

[ She nibbles again, gently, on his fingertip. ]

Would you be so miserable about this if he were Barrayaran?

I know. You're not telling me anything I didn't already know.

Bad enough that he shouldn't run that risk again. You really think he'd let someone carry him back if he didn't need it?

[ He doesn't need his powers for this. Maybe - maybe - if Aral is lucky, he won't kill him. He's not about to set them off on another cycle of tit for tat, revenge and etcetera, but it would be nice. Oh, it would be enjoyable to dismember him, and watch his body pull back together, and do it all over again.

Because he hadn't been able to do it to Gregor. Because he hadn't had the time. His grace is spilling, there's a limited window anyway, so he approaches Aral, the blade glistening with his own blood, and comes down toward him, intending to replicate the wound absolutely in his attacker's own gut.

He may feel powerless, right now, but at least he isn't the only one, and he can sense that the hold Aral has over him is dependent on his concentration, almost feel it slipping back. So it stands to reason that if he breaks that concentration, he can get rid of the whole lot of them. ]

I suppose it's very foolish of me to want to use this place as an opportunity to get my prole subjects to see me as just a human being.

[ Oh. Right. Gregor has done so much telepathy over the past several months, he sometimes forgets how overwhelming it was at first. He'd had much the same reaction... five months ago. ]

[ Gregor sorely wants to keep in this vein, to just keep growing her smile, but he's... not really capable of that right now. ]

... I worry sometimes that loving me will just get him hurt. I'm not-- [ He hesitates. I'm not really allowed to have things like this does not seem right to say to Cordelia, though Gregor feels that way, passive language emphasized. ] It's dangerous to be important to the Emperor.

Prole meaning non-Vor? Well, the only foolish part of it is that you've only got the one. And his situation sounds bloody complicated. So hanging your hopes on him seems...potentially disastrous.
