[Ken's grip was pretty tight, but he's quick enough to let go, and he cranes his neck to look up at him.]

... Hello?

[It's a cold night out in Nonah, and with snow dusting the streets and the wind howling against the paneling of the house, it's definitely one where you stay inside. The house is almost eerily quiet, dim with a few lights pocketed around to give a dull glow. The only sounds that are heard are from the kitchen, and even then, that's nothing suspicious. The kitchen always seemed to be used at some point or another, with how many people are in the house.

Hours pass, and Kaneda makes his way through the house, feet silent on the carpet as he navigates, making his way up or down the stairs. At some point, he'll pass by Ken's room, heels pivoting to enter the room.

And there, left on Ken's nightstand, is a bowl of tsukimi udon. Warm and ready, with some chopsticks ~~stolen~~ taken from the local takeout place bridged across the bowl, paper wrapping and all. The broth's warmth fills the air, and the smell carries through the entire room. The noodles are handmade thanks to Aunt Cass, the broth seasoned and speckled with green onion. And there, right to the side is an egg poached in the broth. Like he'd really forget.

But most importantly, there's a note left on the bowl, written in a scrawly Japanese.

Ken. with a little Koromaru drawing next to it. There was an attempt.

... It's three in the afternoon.

[it isn't long after Kaneda steals himself away again that Hazel discovers the gift. she wonders at it for a moment or two until her hands brush against the scrap of paper on the other side, pulling it closer to stare at the little characters. normally it would be incomprehensible, but these particular moon runes have become such an endearing joke that she knows them as well as...her own name, really.

and that's when she has to sit down on the bed, hands braced against her knees as she stares forcefully at the floor and fights back the tidal wave of emotion. earlier today she'd seen her best friend return to her - something like this now is just too much to handle gracefully.

but she does manage to keep the tears at bay this time in a small measure of mercy from the universe. as soon as she's certain that she isn't going to collapse to the floor as soon as she stands again Hazel's taking the bowl of udon and beginning a silent pilgrimage through the house, looking for the only possible culprit who could have left this.

when she finds Kaneda her expression is a lot stiller than he's probably ever seen it. she has the bowl in both hands like some kind of offering - no longer steaming, but still warm. all it would take is a little trip in the microwave to be good as new, surely.]

...I can't eat this.

[there's no bluster in her voice this time. if anything, Hazel sounds...genuinely sorry.]

[As the self proclaimed guardian-but-not-really, nothing really gets past a komainu on duty. In other words, Kaneda might not notice right away that Komasan was awake the instant he slipped in, alert and already sitting up as he watches his every move with that usual blank stare of his.

It's like he's judging or calculating his every movement, trying to figure out what he's doing and if it's a threat or not. ...Even if it's his own house.

Once Komasan puts everything together, once he sees what Kaneda has placed down, Komasan finally decides to say something before Kaneda has a chance to leave.]

Kaneda! When did you become Udon Santa, zura?!

[He knew about regular Santa, but Komasan had no idea there was an udon version! But why did he get a human to help him...? That should be a youkai thing...]

[Ken had fallen quiet after his admission, staring out at the dark backyard when Kasumi offers her invitation. The effect is immediate, in a way -- he visibly lights up with surprise and longing, raising his head and staring at her to make sure she isn't joking. When he's certain, he nods quickly, almost scrambling to his feet.

[Pan's words come to mind, ones he'd reflected on a lot lately. He'd said he'd get everything he deserved- and at the time he'd believed that to mean he'd finally win against the world that had always held him back.

Powerless, at the mercy of a world experience taught him was always merciless, he was beginning to reach a different conclusion now..]

[There's too many ways to follow that up, so he lets silence fill in instead. Now that paranoia makes him think about it, how many people want him dead?

[It's like he asked him what water was or something. As Ikki's small mental meltdown continues, Tetsuo's mouth draws down into a very teenager pout. The hell was that about.

He goes back to the pc.

Finally adds back in the psychic type. It's not like its very existence is there to remind him of what he's not anymore.]

[She winks at Yayoi over her shoulder, charmed by her name. It sounds a lot like the names from the villagers of Kurain, the ones she'd only heard early on in her life before her mother left. It'd been Chihiro for Mia-- and Mayoi for herself.

[Maya can't help but squeak when he does that, giggling and nearly losing her balance once she's back on her feet.

Huh, so I guess that stuff really doesn't work like you see it on TV.

I'd think it would be the other way around, though.... I mean, most regular people can't communicate with the supernatural, right?

Spirits and shit like that, nah. You have to be psychically sensitive to even notice them, or see half the garbage supernatural guys do for what it really is.

But a witch or a vampire's just a person on the surface, you know? So they just...wander around and nobody ever realizes there's something wrong.
