[As the self proclaimed guardian-but-not-really, nothing really gets past a komainu on duty. In other words, Kaneda might not notice right away that Komasan was awake the instant he slipped in, alert and already sitting up as he watches his every move with that usual blank stare of his.

It's like he's judging or calculating his every movement, trying to figure out what he's doing and if it's a threat or not. ...Even if it's his own house.

Once Komasan puts everything together, once he sees what Kaneda has placed down, Komasan finally decides to say something before Kaneda has a chance to leave.]

Kaneda! When did you become Udon Santa, zura?!

[He knew about regular Santa, but Komasan had no idea there was an udon version! But why did he get a human to help him...? That should be a youkai thing...]

[He didn't notice, surprisingly. Either Komasan was too still on the bed or he was too focused on getting that bowl on the nightstand without a spill, or hell, maybe both. Point is, the komainu goes unnoticed until the bowl gets set.

And when Komasan speaks up, his body freeze, eyes darting up to the source of the noise, fixating on the large, unblinking ones of the voice's owner.]

KOMACCHI?

[How long have you been there?!]

Ah...Guess I am! I was told to deliver these as a matter of fact~!

Ah.

[He seems satisfied with that answer, already digging in by time Kaneda finishes explaining himself. He holds the bowl in his lap, slurping udon like it's no big deal.]

The US has some weird holidays, zura.

[Although he won't complain.]

But...if I didn't wake up, wouldn't the udon get cold, zura? It seems kind of weird to try and hide it, zura.

[There's a few seconds of watching Komasan almost incredulously. He...hadn't really expected that to work. Then again, what would a komainu know about holiday--how did he know about Santa??

Okay, too many questions that he'll have to think about later because he sure as hell doesn't want to think on them now.

Well--thought you were out, you know? And you'd be back here to sleep at SOME point!

[A hand goes up to the back of his neck, rubbing it out of habit.]

...You didn't even know I was here, zura?

[Ouch, his feelings.]

I could've been out all night, it would've turned super cold, zura! Why did you want me to eat cold udon, z-zura?!

Kaneda's brows furrow, a little...insulted at that. Komasan may not have meant it, but it didn't make it sting any less that the youkai came to that conclusion.]


Doo itashimashite.

[It's muttered and soft, like he can't be bothered to say it any louder as he makes a move towards the door.]

[monge]

Wait, where are you going, zura?!

[He can't just leave. What kind of fuckboy attitude is that?]

I can't sleep now, I'm scared, zura!!

[COME BACK.]

Scared?

[His hand rests on the doorframe, brows raised and curious enough to turn back around, replacing the mild frustration he had earlier.]

Of what, Komacchi?

[monge]

E-Eh...

[The way he rests on the doorframe, it reminds Komasan of how cool Kaneda supposedly is. He can't confess his fears to a cool guy like that, he'll think he's...lame.]

N-Never mind, you'll just make fun of me, zura...

[rassera]

Hey...

[Supposedly cool is a good way to put it. But that gets him back over, bouncing lightly on the bed and leaning back on it. He didn't know what komainu had to be afraid of, but then again, it didn't really matter, did it?]

C'mon, you can trust me!

[monge]

[What? Trust? No he can't, Kaneda couldn't even keep his secret.

...That he never said was a secret, but it still counts.]

A-Ah...

[Still, he brought it up, and Komasan can't stand it when people bring stuff up and then don't follow through. That's so irritating.]

Those...those people, that got kidnapped... there was nothing they could do to stop it, zura... I don't wanna get kidnapped, zura... I don't want to wake up and see Miss Maya got kidnapped, z-zuraa...

[Kaneda pulls up his feet to sit crosslegged on the bed, leaning elbows on his knees as he listens. And its amazing how just hearing it come out of someone else's mouth really solifies it for yourself. It's easy to say you've got a handle on the situation, but when it comes down to it?

Kaneda was just as scared as the person before him.]

Me neither.

[And he's right, there's nothing they can do about it. They're at the mercy of the government, and all the little mess ups that come wrapped up with it.]

Didn't even think it COULD happen.

It's made sleeping really scary sometimes, zura....

[Which is probably why he was so easy to wake up in the first place.]

I'm so scared I'll close my eyes and wake up somewhere else again, zura...

[He can't blame Komasan for thinking that, either. How many times did he lie awake back in the children's home, thinking he or Tetsuo would get taken to another? The fear was very real, and the idea of being separated by someone who made you feel safe was nerve-wracking. It's awful, feeling powerless like that. No matter how many facades you put up.

His hand reaches up, this time hovering over the komainu's head, as if silently asking permission to pet.]

Hey, you make it through the night, you know? And you wake up pretty fast--that's good for a guardian!
