[Oh--if he knows her full name then maybe he knows where her father is!]
Have you seem my Papa? I can't find him, but.... he wouldn't let me come here alone so he has to be here, somewhere!
no subject
This world was utterly ridiculous.
Sighing Kimblee looks the former-Lieutenant over more closely. She's young - less than ten years old - and doesn't recognise him or know how she arrived here. Clearly she doesn't remember her adult life so it's unlikely she will know anything useful. But she's not crying or being troublesome yet and there's a certain fascination in seeing her so unguarded.]
No, I'm afraid I haven't seen your father and I don't believe he's here. A pity as I'd dearly like a chance to speak with him myself.
no subject
[Riza swings her feet on the bench, gently petting Boba's ears. The smile is gone, replaced with a nervous little frown.]
I really want to go home. I don't like it her. I don't think Papa would've ever sent me here on purpose either. And I don't even know how I got here at all.
no subject
[Could this be a permanent change? He hopes not. She's not the least bit interesting like this. There's not even the possibility of her knowing any of her father's alchemy research to make it worthwhile. It will be such a waste if she's doomed to relive her childhood. The only upside may be seeing Mustang's face when he finds her but even that won't make up for the loss of the determined young woman the Lieutenant was before.]
no subject
And though she can't give words to her feelings, she isn't too upset by the prospect of not seeing her father again. In some ways that reaction might be even more telling than anything she could have said.]
Oh.
Papa will be cross with me. I don't want to get in trouble. [There's a hint of seriousness in her tone now, her expression somber.]
no subject
I don't expect you shall get in any trouble. Your father is dead.
[Or so he assumed - as an adult she spoke of him in the past tense and gave no indication that she had had any contact with the man in recent years. It didn't really matter if he was wrong though. As she was now Hawkeye - Riza - had no way of knowing otherwise. All he was interested in was seeing how she would take the possibility.]
so much potential headcanon here (but I was gonna learn his research/not that sick/etc etc) Kimblee
Kimblee's essentially told her that she's an orphan. And though she isn't deeply fond of her father she doesn't wish him ill.
The sniffs, little eyebrows furrowed.]
B...but how? He's not that sick or anything. I thought...
[I thought that maybe I'd been doing an okay job, taking care of him. Or at least a passable job, one that wouldn't kill him.]
yess, give him it all! or just me
Sick. Hmm, so the man had taken ill and- what? Had it been a fatal illness? Did it matter? Any illness was unlikely to be related to Hawkeye Senior's alchemy in a useful way - illness from certain raw materials was possible but it still didn't tell him anything. And Riza was distressed by the idea of her father dying so the relationship hadn't been that strained. Not when she was this young anyway.]
It seems he took a turn for the worse. [In a dismissive tone and he goes right on to say-] Do you know what he planned to do with his research after his death?
Man oh man, the headcanon here is so strong
[Riza doesn't understand, now, what her memory is regarding her father's sudden illness. When her mother died, he'd been fine. Then, one day he'd done something--and suddenly he was sick. As an adult, with the knowledge she has that comes with age, she understands far more what her father did. Along with that understanding came her great distaste for alchemy as a whole, and her lack of desire to learn it.
Regardless, the stranger is asking about her father's research. He's been so focused lately, talking about his research and asking her if she'd take care of it for him when she was a little bigger, a little older--and of course she said yes, because Papa was paying attention to her and she'd agree to anything if he could just remember that she was still here. He has, however, made her promise to tell nobody about it. So, despite clearly thinking hard about Kimblee's question:]
I dunno. He's still working on it now, and doesn't let me see it.
can totally buy it though! it would make so much sense
Such a pity. We have a not-dissimilar specialty. I would have relished a chance to discuss his work with him.
[Although given the man's apparent dislike for the military he doubtless would have found someone like Kimblee as distasteful as Riza usually does. As most people do.]
There's no one else in your family, correct?
[She'd never mentioned a mother or siblings and most alchemists seem to want to pass their secrets on to family if possible so he assumes not.]
I like having Baby!Riza giving Kimblee nuggets of info
Oh! What kind of alchemy can you do, mister?
[She's not quite at the age where she's not a fan of the science. That comes later. She considers this for a moment while fiddling with a stray strand of hair, her feet still kicking beneath her on the bench.
The small, uncertain frown grows at his question, and she shakes her head.]
Mama died a little while ago, right before Papa got sick. The doctor didn't know what was wrong with her, and he said Papa didn't have the same thing and he didn't wanna help so much. His medicine didn't help Mama so much... And then, when he came to see Papa, he just got mad and left. He was very cross.
[The doctor, recognizing what had been attempted, wanted nothing to do with the alchemist. He'd given some homeopathic remedy or another and stalked off, never to return with additional help despite her calls. Eventually she'd give up. For now, though, she simply thinks the doctor is kind of a jerk and, like most six year olds, feels that this is an appropriate assessment.]
It is very fun! And she will be SO mad later!
[How that could possibly relate to the kind of research her father did was for her to work out. He's far more intrigued by her answer and those telling little details.
A mother who died. The widower an alchemist who fell 'ill' shortly after her passing. It's not hard to see the pattern and it's only made more clear when she describes the doctor's reaction. It seems people never change, never learn. Especially not alchemists.
Kimblee wants to laugh at the irony of it all. Hawkeye senior, the Elrics and their teacher. And Mustang who had needed to be forced through the gate but might well have taken that step himself if forced sooner. It's a constantly repeating pattern throughout human history. All that changes are the details.]
I can only imagine how distressing that all must have been for you. [Sickly sweet words to match his smile. How he hopes the Lieutenant will be restored eventually. To see her face and have her know what she has shared freely and of her own will will be far too enjoyable to miss.]
Yet I am sure what became of him had very little to do with your actions young lady or that of any doctor. In the end we must all reap what we sow. Yourself included.
[Exactly the sort of thing a friendly stranger tells a young child, right?]
The maddest. When he'll be kind enough to tell her all these newfound bits of intel
[Riza might be six, but there's something about Kimblee that doesn't seem right. It isn't just his word choice--it's more than that...his tone and level of curiosity just seems off.
The revelation shows on the little girl's face as she frowns.]
I guess so. I wish the doctor had tried more.
Wow what? I mean, it's not like he'll go out of his way to piss her off or something. Really
[And wouldn't agree when she had but so very few could appreciate his work. That made it no less beautiful.
He can guess she might be finally beginning to wonder about him or at least to tire of the conversation. He's reluctant to relinquish any further information she could yield but if she's going to clam up on him he'll have little other choice. He's already gained more than he expected from the encounter.]
I doubt there was a thing he could have done and I am sure your father knew that too. Wishing won't change a thing. If I were you I should consider my own future and what to make of it now you have the freedom to do so.
Of course he won't. I mean, who *does* that?
Papa said when I was older I could keep his research for him. Maybe. [The blonde considers this before shaking her head.] I guess I won't know now.
Someday maybe I can see you do your alchemy, mister. That would be neat!
[You will see it some day, Riza, and you won't particularly like it.]
...I'm six. Well, six and three-quarters. ]When you are six, the three-quarters part absolutely matters] I'm...not sure what I'm 'pposed to do now.
Not him that's for sure! He's way too, uh, nice for it. Yeah.
[Leave them to her and not his apprentice? Curious. Or maybe the man had originally planned to teach his skills to his daughter when she was old enough only to find her, by her own admission, unsuitable. So many questions, he really would have to discuss the matter further with the Lieutenant when - or perhaps if - she returned to her usual self. He was rather eager for the opportunity, even knowing she wouldn't feel the same.
Kimblee just smiles at the comment about his alchemy. She will see it indeed though 'neat' is not the word she'll use to describe it at that time. Such a pity.]
Surely that's old enough to make your own choices.
[Had he been like this when he was this age? Surely not. He was sure that at the very least he had never been so naive and trusting of others even when very young.]
Don't consider what you think might be expected of you, think what you might want to do. You can do anything you please and there is no one to stop you correct?
Of course not
He said maybe. I've never seen his notes.
[Amber eyes blink once and then twice, and then she presses her face into Boba's fur.] Not really yet, but I'm going to do my best.
Besides...just 'cause there's nobody to say "no" doesn't mean you should do things that are bad, mister.
no subject
[Not yet if she ever had. As he understood the true course of events her father had died when she was older and so it may well be she had seen those notes of his by then. It occurs to him to wonder if she had inherited them and been the one to pass that information onto Mustang. If she had had no inclination to learn alchemy herself and a positive relationship with her father's apprentice.... If that were the case it would certainly make the story far more interesting.]
Now, did I suggest that you should do anything you might consider 'bad'? I simply meant that you now have the freedom to make your own choices. And, more to the point, what is considered bad is relative to the one making that judgement. What is considered bad for a young lady such as yourself is not always bad for an adult and similarly the contrary is also true. Likewise good and bad vary with culture. There are things considered bad in this world that are perfectly acceptable in Amestris.
[He shrugs and looks around them before turning back to the girl.]
You should make those judgements for yourself based on what you consider to be the correct course of action and not blindly follow along with what you have been told to believe. That is of utmost importance no matter who you are.
