The sun hasn't set yet and the temperature hovers somewhere just below 70 degrees this evening; imPorts, both recently arrived and not, will have been escorted to this event so that they can meet each other, have a good time, and of course officially state their registration status. Or lack thereof. It's your decision, they emphasize, even though the unspoken "but" is always there.

It's an elaborate spread, certainly much more elegant than last time. Eden East herself, elegant in her backless champagne-colored dress, meets and greets each and every imPort as she flutters to and fro. She'll find you and chat for a few moments, shaking your hand and complimenting your dress. She'll know your name, and she'll have an entourage of aids and cameras following her wake. Captain Holiday, in contrast, maintains the energy of someone who feels out of place holding the Swear-In ceremony somewhere so extravagant. As imPorts arrive he tells them where to be for the ceremony part of the evening, but that they are free to enjoy themselves until then and after.

Five and a half months? It was a whirlwind, that's for sure.

[ She hadn't settled in before she was caught up in video game adventures and getting stuck in a corset and heels she couldn't rip free from. Also JPRG-like monsters? She hated all these trips across the multiverse. ]

[It's hard for Laura to tell exactly what Peej means by "whirlwind," but she isn't getting an overly negative sense--at least, insofar as being forced into another dimension isn't overly negative in and of itself.

Peej didn't say "death trap," let's put it like that. It's enough that she doesn't ask for details, not yet anyway.] You have not gone back to your world?

[ Her world? Haha, not since it was erased from the multiverse. It's difficult to stop thinking of that world as home when she's long settled into the other world, finding family and friendship in the JSA. ]

Not since. Back there, people got ported in and out, sometimes for a short time. I can't tell you if it's the same here.

Okay. [Her tone is reflective and kind of annoyed; she clearly doesn't like the information. There's a beat, and then one more question, phrased somewhat abruptly:]

Did you register?

[What would someone who has been here longer choose?]

[ She can't really fault her for it, but she also hopes her exasperation is not directed at Karen, who can only provide so much. She still feels like a newbie among the other imPorts despite her six month period and travels in and out of that world to where Lachesis needed them to be. ]

With the government? No.

[ Her tone now is mildly unimpressed and disinterested; she isn't fond of the idea at all. ]

Besides, I'm a businesswoman. I help protect the world in a different way.

[That interests her. She perhaps even likes it, as evidenced by the guarded approval on her face.

Most had chosen to register. It was the safer option.]

I did not, either. [Asking why is a waste of words, from Laura's perspective. She glances at Karen, assessing.] Will they allow you to run your business when you did not register?

[It's blunt, but no offense is meant.]

They gave us a choice: they have to respect it our decision.

[ Laura's young, too, so Karen worries the kids might feel more pressured into doing something they may regret. She's worked alongside teens enough to know they don't always need a tracker slapped on their wrists. ]

Not a clue. Right now I'm keeping to the job they set me up with. Gotta earn money somehow.

[Laura's hands fist in her pockets, and she looks up at Karen. Whatever emotion her expression conveys is difficult to read.]

No. They don't.

[ She stares back in silent confusion at first, the corner of her mouth forcibly quirking into a sheepish smile. She's grown used to more socially inept, but social teenagers, so Laura's monotonous attitude throws her off momentarily. ]
