OPEN - Various Import Cities - Any time

[When Ed isn't holed up in the Vorkosigan's basement or in one of the labs in the Dendarii office, he can be found in various places around the import cities, perhaps lounging on the steps of a library with a book in his face, or paying a visit to some hole in the wall coffee shop.

Or he could be chasing a stray dog that just stole his lunch down the street. The possibilities are endless here.

[When he is at the Residence, however, he can be found any number of places as well.

That's a lie—he's usually working on research in the basement or curled up with a new book on one of the estate's many couches.]

Semi-open - Vorkosigan Residence - Early August

[For once Ed has managed to fall asleep without a book on his face or slumped across his desk, instead draped awkwardly across the basement couch this time. What a good spot for dreams that definitely won't end with him waking up in a screaming panicked fit.]

[ HE IS STILL A NERD AND STILL FORGOT A BLANKET, which is why it is good, as always, that Winry is here. She tugs the little throw blanket off the floor and flops it over him. ]


Geez...

[What a nice gesture. Awake, Ed might have thanked her, but now he simply rolls over and...frowns, his brow furrowed tightly.]

[heart_wrenching]

[ . . . :( she goes to see if she can scare up another blanket. Maybe he is just that cold?? ]

[Yes, just a case of the shivers, surely.

The unsettled tenseness only gets worse while she's gone though; whatever dreams have a hold of him now tanking fast until he jerks awake with a frantic wail. Probably about the time she's coming back with that second blanket.]

Ed! Ed, hey!

[He freezes in place awkwardly, hanging half off the couch after nearly tumbling off it in his initial fit. For a moment it doesn't look like he's quite recognized her yet, having only frozen at the sound of her voice.]

[ She'll still come steady him, sorry scared Ed, she won't let you also be floor Ed. ]

C'mon, hey, it's just me . . . You're OK . . .

Gregor - Vorkosigan Residence

[Following his entirely ineffectual confrontation with Simon Edward had sequestered himself in his room. It seemed like a safe bet considering how little time he actually spends in there; the couch in the basement sees far more use than his bed ever has. Still, it can't be the semi-perfect hideaway forever. Even if no one comes looking for him, he will have to venture out to get himself food, and that means hoping there's no one to run into on the way to the kitchen.]

[ It entirely suits Gregor not to have this discussion right away. To be honest, he has higher priorities: he had to go through his conversations with Aral, Simon, and Mark first, in that specific order, in fulfillment of his duties and his personal interests combined. Yet he's as sensitive as ever to tasks left undone, and he realizes this is one. With sufficient time given to cool off for all involved, it's in the back of his mind to speak with Edward and Winry-- separately-- about ignoring established plans in conflict situations.

Gregor doesn't intentionally catch him in the kitchen, but when he comes in on Gregor meditatively sipping his coffee, he might as well take the chance.

He deliberately sounds neutral, even relaxed. ] Edward, do you have time for me to speak with you? [ There's something... not quite optional in his tone. ]

[Edward's been around military long enough to hear the almost-command in Gregor's tone, but he's also never been one to listen to demands that don't suit him. There's a distinct beat of hesitation, an inner debate on whether walking right back out is the better option here, but...he knows he isn't going to be able to avoid whatever this is forever. Not when they're living in the same home.

He lets out a soft, exasperated groan and slouches in the doorway.]

About what?

[ Mildly, ]

About your decision to interfere with an ongoing extraction operation. Of course, if you're too busy...

[ Ha ha. No. ]

[Edward rolls his eyes and slumps against the door frame.]

You mean the one vague order to stay put with no explanation?

[vorbarra]

[ Gregor is too practiced at this to fold his arms. He merely sips at his coffee pleasantly before continuing. This doesn't even rate very highly on his list of difficult dressing-downs to give. Edward not being his subject and therefore not technically in his chain of command does complicate things-- he doesn't react according to the script Gregor's used to at all-- but it's manageable. ]

Did you ask for one?

[ He actually doesn't know; it's a sincere question. Gregor's sincerity in general is hard to discredit. ]

Mark - Vorkosigan Residence

[It's late one evening when Ed takes to pacing the halls again, for once with an actual destination in mind. There's a knot of unease in his gut, one he's not sure he wants to deal with right now, so why not distract himself spending some time with a friend? One that doesn't know him well enough to read him at a glance which means he's on the lookout for Mark.

He passes through the kitchen first in case Mark's up for a late snack before he checks his room.]

[ Mark had gone for a late-night snack, yeah, but up is not exactly what he is. He's fallen asleep at the kitchen table, tablet in front of him, face planted on the wooden surface, a log of cheese on a plate off to his right, snoring gently. He ripples into wakefulness as soon as Ed enters the kitchen, though - well-trained with wary instincts, he can't sleep long around other people. So he tips his head to the side to see who it is, eyes slightly narrowed - and then he sits up, a little embarrassed.

Mumbling sleepily: ]

Oh. Uh. Hey.

[fullmetalbrat]

Hey, uh... Was that you snoring? [Sure Ed had bad sleeping habits, but falling asleep with a plate of food was a new one for him.]

[jacksonian]

Oh.

[ He rubs a little at his red cheek, where the table made an impression on his face. ]

Uh...I don't know. Maybe. Someone was snoring?

[fullmetalbrat]

... Well, maybe I was imagining things.

[He wanders a bit further into the kitchen, grabbing a peach for himself.]

Want some company?

[jacksonian]

Yeah. Maybe it'll keep me more on task.

[ He rubs at his face, and then waves at the chair opposite him. ]

[With permission given, he drops himself into the chair across from Mark.]
