I haven't had such an illustrious career, so far. It takes about thirteen years of college and training to become a surgeon, and I've still got three left.

But you've put in the time and effort to get that far and would probably have a very promising career as your payoff.

[... or "had", as the case may be. Oh dear.]

[puppydoctor]

[His brain supplies the "had" without prompting, it's okay Alison.]

Here, maybe I will. I joined the army, back home. Put it all on hold to go be a combat surgeon.

You were going to be a combat surgeon? That's... very selfless of you.

[She is starting to admire him, in spite of herself.]

[There is a direct correlation between Alison's admiration, and the redness of George's ears.]

I felt like that was where I was meant to go, to help the most people. War may be against my principles, but as long as men are getting sent off to fight, surgeons will be needed there to patch them up, regardless of right and wrong.

And I'm sure you would have gotten a lot of very valuable experience in the field, too.

[Her smile becomes a little bit more sincere as she talks, which is probably terrifying in a different way to George.]

Like any mother, I hope my kids will grow up to be doctors.

Yeah, I wanted to go into trauma. It seemed like a good path to go down.

[Oh god, sincerity. If he was anyone other than George O'Malley it would be terrifying. But he's about as sincere as it comes, and it's almost refreshing instead.]

And it's a great ambition to have, as long as they want it. Saving lives is the biggest thrill I could ever imagine. Wouldn't have picked a different career for anything.

What's it like here? I can never tell if things are uniformly more or less advanced in this place.

It's kind of weird. The civilian hospitals are all a little behind what I'm used to, even with the tech that imPorts have brought in. I'd like to see some advances made to help the people of this world.

I'm sure someone could help you with that. Once this whole thing with the Russians is all over, of course.

[puppydoctor]

Maybe. I'm not too great at getting people to listen.

You need to be more assertive. I said that to Donnie all the time about his last job.

[And then he got fired. But that is absolutely not Alison's fault. There's a difference between being assertive, and insulting your boss to her face.]

Mm-hm. We've been together for a long time now.

Well, it takes work. Communication is key to keeping things running smoothly.

[And she is absolutely giving George meaningful looks about this in the most intimidating way possible.]

[He can physically feel himself lose about a centimeter in height under her Look.]

Hey, you don't have anything to worry about. I'm a master of communication. Getting me to shut up is the real problem for Sarah.

I'm sure you let her get in a few words on occasion.

[She's pretty sure he just shuts up completely whenever Sarah chooses to talk, honestly.]

I like to think so. She's hard to read, but I'm getting there.
