[Right now she does not mind the hugs.]

Dessert...[She smirks.] I know I want something but we can't have it in here.

[Hint hint.]

[Cosima hesitates because if Alison ever found at that she was encouraging Chloe to smoke pot she'd be in so much trouble, and Alison is scary. But Cosima could really use a joint right now.]

Yeah, okay. I'll meet you out by the pool in ten?

[Chloe looked a bit relieved as she grinned. It was nice to have at least one of the sisters who approved. Sort of.]

Yeah. I'll see you out there.

[Cosima wasn't kidding about the ice cream. She meets Chloe out by the pool, two towels slung over her shoulder, a stack of books under one arm, and two full bowls of ice cream balanced precariously in the other. They are going to do this right.]

Chocolate or strawberry?

[Chloe was already stretched out in one of the pool chairs, eyes closed, just trying to enjoy the quiet sounds of the city and not letting herself worry. She'd brought her comm down but it was face down on the table between the chairs so she didn't just watch Max's video more.]

[She opened one eye at the question, then grinned.]

Strawberry.

Good choice.

[Cosima hands over the bowl of ice cream before flopping into the chair next to Chloe. She's already looking more relaxed than she did inside.]

Thanks.

[She sat up as she took the bowl, stretching a bit before settling back into the chair.]

So. Mexico huh?

[This was still pretty weird.]

[Cosima shifts so she's sitting cross-legged in her chair. She puts a book in her lap and balances her bowl of ice cream on one knee.]

Mexico. You ever been before?

Till I got ported in here, I'd never even left the damn west coast, man.

[This wasn't how she'd wanted to travel.]

Where? I grew up in Berkeley.

Oregon. The coast.

Little do-nothing town called Arcadia Bay.

Haven't heard of it.

[Cosima leans back in the chair, setting aside her now finished ice cream. She holds out a hand toward Chloe expectantly.]

You like it there?

[Chloe just smirks and reaches out, her hand hovering over Cosima's. If someone were watching, it would almost look like they were about to hold hands...except after a moment, a joint appeared in a shimmer of light on Cosima's palm, and Chloe dragged her own had back.]

Nope. Spent the last couple years trying to get away.

[Cosima grins, still amazed at Chloe's ability. Seeing objects just appear out of thin air will never get old.]

Yeah? That bad?

I don't know. [Chloe shrugs.] I'm probably, ya know, massively biased since I was trapped there.

[She takes a long drag from her joint before sitting up, looking Chloe in the eye.]

What made you feel trapped there?

[Cosima had always felt free in her own home, had never wanted to get away from Berkeley, though opportunities she couldn't pass up had sent her elsewhere.]

[Chloe frowns at that question, leaning back in her chair more with her spoon in her mouth for a decent chunk of seconds before she pulled it out and shrugged.]

I don't...I mean, there wasn't any way for me to get free of it. After dad died, money got...hard. And then mom married fuckin' David and he started treating me like a little soldier and..

[She stops, and after a second she smiles, mostly to herself.]

Then I met Rachel, and she felt trapped too. And we were gonna just...run away. To California or wherever. Away.

[Cosima listens intently, struck by why Chloe and Sarah get along so well. That desire to run away, it's not something Cosima's ever had.]

Who's Rachel?

Uh. She's... [Her ex wasn't right, it wasn't enough. But...]

Rachel is my...I loved her. [It's a quiet admittance, but completely honest. Even the anger of things she had learned about Rachel couldn't make that fade.]

We were gonna have a future and shit, go out and...I don't know. Live. See the world.

What happened to her?

[Cosima pauses after asking the question, wondering if that was the right thing to say. Maybe it was too personal.]

[There's a hitch in her voice when she answers. Wounds like these would close eventually right? Maybe?...]

She died.

[Once she said it, Chloe seemed to...shrink a little in her chair, and she almost immediately conjured up a joint and lit it, taking a long puff. Ah, 'dealing.']

[Cosima pulls her into a hug immediately. She hadn't meant to bring up a bad subject, especially after the day Chloe had had. Hopefully, she won't mind if the clone hugs continue.]

I'm so sorry, man.

[She hadn't expected that hug, but she didn't mind it either, especially with the sudden melancholy. She sucked in a slow breath.]

I just try not to think about it much, you know?

Not a terrible plan. But if you ever wanna talk about it, we're here for you, okay?

[Cosima hopes that not too much, that it won't scare Chloe off.]

Yeah, okay.

[She sighs, shifting a bit in the hug so she can take a puff of her joint.]

I'll probably just do my 'drink, get high and repress' deal. It's worked so far.

[It's half a joke, at least.]
