[Maya answers, leading her into the kitchen.]

It's Sumeragi. Kururu Sumeragi.

[ She pauses on the way to the kettle, bowing quickly. ]

It's nice to meet you.

It's nice to meet you too! You can call me Maya.

[She points out where the kettle is, starting to take out some supplies to cook with. There's always so many eggs in this house.... They take Ken's love of eggs very seriously.]

Kururu's a pretty cute name...

[ She's not even sure what to say to that, though the heat of her cheeks as she fills the kettle answers for her. ]

'Maya' is really nice too. It sounds elegant.

[Maya stops suddenly, looking at Kururu in surprise.

'Elegant'? When has anyone ever used that word to describe Maya Fey?]

O-oh. Thanks.

[well. This just got slightly awkward oops]

[ Had no one really ever . . . ? But it seemed so obvious. It wasn't just her name—it was in the way she moved, her whole body effortlessly choreographed into each motion. The way the gentle sway of her hair matched the sway of her hips as she walked, how it would be just as easy to picture the same movements under layers of embroidered robes. Even the way the plain, mass-produced dishware became something else in her hands, cupped with unconscious ceremony, as if the history and value it lacked was seeped instead into her very bones. ]

What are you making?

[Perhaps it had been noticeable to others-- or perhaps they'd been too focused on the demeanor Maya tended to put forth. After all, she did have a habit of presenting herself as silly and excitable.

...At least, no one had ever said they noticed. A bit pink, Maya starts returning to her task.]

Well, the best thing to make to feed a lot of people is rice, right?

[She asks, looking at Kururu over her shoulder as she reaches up to grab the rice cooker off the fridge.]

The best thing for any meal is rice.

Not that others are bad, it's just . . . not the same. Not when it's days at a time.

[ Digging into her pockets, she . . . comes up with a wrench, putting it absently on the counter beside the tea pot.

And then a caliper. A pair of pliers, another wrench . . . her brows start furrowing. They had been right here, hadn't they . . . ?]

Right? Rice you can have like, any time...

[It's easy to make, too, which means even when everyone is tired, the whole house can have a meal.

As Kururu starts laying things on the counter, Maya turns to look, curious.]

...Whatcha doin'?

My hair clips . . .

[ She smooths a hand over her hair self-consciously. It springs up again as soon as her hand passes, fwippy and rebellious and nothing at all like Maya's respectable multi-hued rainbow. ]

They were here . . . here?

[ A socket set joins the pile. Two screwdrivers. Some band-aids. ]

Oh-- weren't they on the couch?

[At least, that's where she'd thought she noticed them. She'd notice little things like that-- things she'd otherwise have to pick up for Pearl. But to her Kururu's flippy hair was cute, and she'd figured it was more of an aesthetic thing than super necessary.]

Want me to go look?

It's fine! I mean, you're cooking, and I'm sure I . . .

[ Two more handfuls of tools, her communicater (that's where it went . . .), a phone that looks like it's about ten years out of date, and—]

Aha! I knew they were here.

Well! At least they're not lost.

[ 'Like' . . . that catches her off guard, a little. ]

It's not . . . really like that. It just . . . keeps it out of the way.

[ Another self conscious pat as she tries to find the most rebellious of the tufts, locking it down. ]

[Maya has to giggle.]

It's flippy.
