[Manolo's eyebrows rise toward his bangs, and he tries to get a better look at what's written on the boxes in Ken's arms.] ...Japan has superheroes too? Or is it kind of like what Maya is doing with the Pink Princess?

[amadaman]

[Ken notices Manolo's curiosity! So it's a short struggle, but he pulls out one of the first DVDs and shows it to him.]

Japan has a lot of superheroes. Well, they were fictional.

... Jaime-san says my friends and I were like heroes, but not like the one here.

[matadorable]

[Manolo peers down at the DVD, taking note of the characters' dynamic poses and grinning.]

Well, I like fictional superheroes too. [He still smiles when he recalls the comic books he, Maria, and Joaquin read when they were younger.]

You were heroes back home, you mean?

[amadaman]

That's what Jaime-san says, [he corrects, mildly but persistently. His idea of "superheroes" is still a solid, specific one that he can't apply himself and his friends to.]

We fought monsters, and we had to help people. But it's different from what's in the stories. I was going to watch that today. Do you want to join me?

[matadorable]

Wow, you fought monsters? That sounds like pretty important hero work to me.

[He's being utterly sincere about it, and thinks Ken is just being modest. Regardless, though, Manolo is delighted by the invitation.] I'd love to!

[amadaman]

Monster fighting's just monster fighting! It was-- [he stops. shakes his head.] ... It was important. Sometimes, we said it was like hero work, too. It'll be okay to use the TV in the living room, right?

[matadorable]

[That sounds like a long story, and maybe one that's better suited for another day. Ken came out here to relax, after all!]

That should be fine! No one was using it when I left, anyway.

[amadaman]

[Ken's more than happy to not talk about his home world and to focus on superheroes instead. He grins and nods this time, and he kicks the ground harder so they can get back to Manolo's home faster.]

Great! I don't think Jaime-san or Minato-san will mind, then, and I brought some snacks, too. Did you have superhero stories back home Manolo-san?

[matadorable]

Oh, that's really nice of you, thanks! [By now, he's noticed that snacking is very much something people do when they watch the Netflix or bring discs of their own. He can appreciate that.]

Yes. Actually, we have superheroes back home, kind of like here in Heropa. People like to draw comics and share stories about their adventures.

[amadaman]

About their own adventures? This is my first time hearing about something like that. Do you know them personally?

[matadorable]

I don't think so? They're probably more like stories that originally comes from word-of-mouth, you know? [He smiles.] Joaquin's the only superhero I've ever met personally. Our town is pretty small and quiet, so we didn't get much...traffic, I guess you could say, hahah.

[amadaman]

That makes sense. It's probably for the better if it's more peaceful that way.

Did you two grow up together? You seem to know each other very well.

[matadorable]

[Well, as peaceful as it can be, considering all the banditos on the loose, but Manolo decides not to mention that.]

Yes, actually! I've known him my whole life.

[amadaman]

Oh, so it's what they call... childhood friends, I think? It's good to be with someone you're so familiar with, huh?

[As they arrive at Manolo's house, which Ken probably has keys to already, Ken decides that he will actually stand aside and let the actual resident open his own door. Would it be weird if a guest had a key to your house you didn't know about? Probably.]

[matadorable]

Yes, that's exactly it! [Some of his best childhood memories involve him, Joaquin and Maria getting into some kind of trouble or another.

He has an almost wistful look on his face as he unlocks the door. After a couple of seconds, he holds it open for Ken.] After you.

[amadaman]

[Ken steps inside with a thanks, polite as always (to people he likes). Childhood friends, huh. That's nice; he was still a kid, but he didn't have any friends his age that weren't from this world. It'll be nice if he could grow up here with Dipper and Maya, but the two of them wanted to go home. He couldn't ask them to stay for his sake...

He sets down the DVDs in his arms and shows the first volume to Manolo, though.]

I can set this up and get us started when you're ready.

[matadorable]

That would be great, actually! [Making him use the newfangled technology would take longer than necessary...] Would you like something to drink?

[amadaman]

[He'll teach you eventually, Manolo. For today, he'll handle it so they can enjoy the show as much as possible.]

Yes, please. Just water would be okay... thank you!

[matadorable]

[Manolo grins. Somehow, he's not surprised Ken goes for the healthy option. But, hey, he's not about to make fun of him for it.] One glass of water, coming right up!

[With that, he steps into the kitchen and soon returns with some water for Ken and a glass of juice for himself.]

[amadaman]

[Ken does care about his health a lot, but here it's mostly his ego. He doesn't want to go for milk in case he gets a stomachache again. He doesn't want to seem childish too much with juice! (Manolo is probably the last person he has to worry about that with.) But he's perfectly happy with the water nonetheless, so he smiles and thanks him again before he moves over to the tv and starts fiddling with the DVD player.]

[Manolo takes a sip of his juice, blissfully unaware of why Ken didn't go for that option.]

So...what do we call these again? [He's talking about the TV show.]

This one's um...

Supreme Giant Task Force Soul Five? I got it when we went to California last summer.

[matadorable]

Oh yeah? [His face brightens at such an over-the-top name.] What kind of story is it? Do you know?

[amadaman]

I think the plot pattern is pretty standard, but they're supposedly reincarnations of some really strong old-time heroes and inherited their powers and get flashbacks to old memories that tell them how to defeat the enemies that show up.

[matadorable]

[Plot patterns may be standard for some people, but it's not like Manolo has a lot of other superhero television programs to compare this one to.] Well, I'm already interested! It sounds like a lot of fun.
