If I'd known you like Hi-Chew I would've brought some! Even though we don't get imported candy usually until summer? When there's lots of tourists and stuff.

Tetsuo isn't like how Mabel last remembers him. He's hunched up small on the bed wearing Kaneda's jacket, for one thing; for another, there's no trace of much emotion left on his face in general that's not either worried or sad, most likely both. His hair's also weirdly flat, and less hedgehog than usual.

His room's pretty much bare; there's no decoration, no sign of anyone really living here if not for the random pile of stuff in a few corners. He's been here for half a year and it looks like he could have moved in yesterday.]

I didn't think you'd have it. No one does.

[Except Ken Amada. HE does... and that's a topic best left undiscussed for now.]

It's kinda rare? We have to special order it from a catalog with all kinds of stuff from all over the world. It's like a novelty thing!

[She glances around briefly, noting the total lack of personality going on in the room. The guy needs a poster intervention. And around a hundred hugs, from the look on his face.

Mabel plops down on the floor. A few more seconds of digging before she finds the bag she's looking for, holding it out for him to take.]

Here. You can have all of them, if you want! These are kinda terrible for my braces.

[...He moves to take the whole bag, reaching out slowly as if he's taking them from the jaws of an alligator. He's got to argue that, Mabel, imagine if you were suddenly told normal things like hot dogs, hamburgers and twinkies were novelty.]

[Even Robbie was easier to deal with than this guy. This is like Robbie, but hard mode. But she's already paved the way with goodwill snacks, she might as well get to the point. Now or never! Because she only has so much candy.]

Anyway so I just wanted to say that I'm sorry he was such a bad friend and used you. That was-- really really awful, because when you think someone cares about you but it turns out they're just a huge buttface it hurts a lot. Especially 'cause Peter seemed really nice and cool but I guess he's not really either of those things.

[It all comes out in her usual rush, though a little more nervous than usual for her. Just a tad. ]

[Blink. Blink, again, as he makes sense of that; the translator does an admirable job of getting everything, but the more rapidfire the words, the more garbled the syntax can get. Plus, that's a lot of words... and... she has no reason for any of this.

Pan's made it pretty clear that no one just wants to associate with him. Why she does is a mystery, hell, why she's apologizing is as well - but if she wants to bitch about Pan's existence, he's game.]

[Mabel blinks, surprised. After a streak of colorful housemates and spending more than five minutes in the company of Bull, it's not the swears that get her. It's the enthusiasm. Tetsuo's been so quiet! It's like he cares about something! And sure it's grumpy angry enthusiasm but whatever, it works.]

...yeah! Yeah! It's rude as heck, pretending you're somebody's friend! Who even does that!?

[iamtetsuo]

['Kaneda has', that little voice in the back of his head says, but he doesn't have it in him to voice it aloud. He knows it's not true, but he's still not sure it's not true; it's hard to tell what's what right now.]

He does, I guess.

Well he sucks. [It's time to eat some candy. Angrily.] I've met some creepy guys before but he's the worst. Like sure, maybe Gideon kidnapped me with a giant robot! But at least he never tricked me into helping him with an evil plan.

I don't have anything. The stuff he gave me broke a long time ago.

[Kaneda already burned it.]

You're way ahead on this... you're already at, like, the part where you have a makeover to make yourself a new you.

[Oh Mabel if you knew just how hard a question that was right now. Tetsuo looks at Kaneda's jacket, then to the bed, then shrugs.

He used to know the answer to that; it used to be turquoise, not that he had that specific a name for the color. Now... he's really not sure what he likes anymore.]

[She follows his eyes to the jacket and notices that confused, lost look. That's the look of someone who needs to find himself again. He needs options.]

...what about purple? Like, a really dark purple? That's kind of close to black. Or a navy blue! And a kind of grapefruit orange.

[iamtetsuo]

Sure, I guess.

[What's he even agreeing to here]

[Mabel digs through her bag and pulls out several tiny bottles of nail polish, grinning.]

Now we just find out which ones go best with your coloring!

[iamtetsuo]

[He actually does, slowly.]

[Okay Mabel, be cool. Don't scare him off. He's like a baby deer, scared of new and glamorous things. In one practiced motion she twists open the deep purple nail polish, takes his hand, and starts painting his ring finger with all the expertise of a sleepover veteran.]

[iamtetsuo]

[He reached his hand out. This is all HIS damn fault, and now he's gonna look stupid.

What's he supposed to do? Tetsuo watches her as his nail changes color, looking for all the world like a skittish gazelle backed into a corner he put himself in with no real idea how to get out of it. It's hard to fight the anxiety at just someone touching his hand; what if she did more...

Freezing in place makes him one hell of a cooperative canvas for artistic endeavors. Mabel's always been able to get him to go along with whatever; from bouncy castles to this.


Oh, whatever. If this is the worst she's gonna do, he can tell himself forever that he doesn't care. They already all know he's a failure of whatever he used to be anyway. What's a little more.]
