Maya steps forward, sliiiightly wiggling the plate before she offers it to him.]

Chicken Maaaayo. There's more downstairs, too, if you want more.

[She tries not to seem proud of herself.]

[If you're expecting him to do anything, Maya, get used to disappointment. He's hungry, but not hungry enough to make himself reach out for it. It's a minor miracle she got this much out of him at all.


He hasn't had onigiri in a very long time.]

Well I'm not gonna feed them to you, y'know!

[she reaches a little closer but almost loses her balance, so she. decides to finally just set the plate down next to him.]

[iamtetsuo]

[He physically flinches when she leans closer, a little more than she intended to. He can move fast when he wants to, but there's not that much bed left to back up against. Look just leave them here or don't! He doesn't want ANYONE close enough to touch him, so stop being that!]

Stay away!

[Maya snaps back when he calls out, straightening up with widened eyes.

Oh.

Oh.]

I'm-- I'm sorry!

[She holds her hands up, shaking her head. She hadn't meant to scare him-- to make him more uncomfortable. Starting to back up, she looks toward the door, wondering if she should just leave, or--....]

[It takes him a while to relax at all even after she pulls back, watching her warily to gauge what she'll do. He doesn't know. He can't even find out if he wanted to!

Even now, he can still feel the cold shock of a hand plunging deep into his back, through his spine and whatever else, fingers closing around-

One knee draws closer, letting him shift his weight into a crouch. It's a little better to get his feet under him. Like that, he can run if he has to.]

Hey-- hey. Hey.

[Immediately, Maya drops down to her knees, holding her hands up still, shaking her head. The less threatening she can be, the better.

She tries not to sound panicked, when she says--]

It's okay. I'm not gonna hurt you.

I'm here to keep you safe, remember? No one's gonna hurt you, not even me.

[As if she could hurt him.]

I'm sorry.

[It's a start. Tetsuo stays just like he is for a while, but slowly his muscles relax just enough that his posture doesn't scream that he'll he'll bolt at the first sign of movement. All she did in the end was leave the plate there, and oddly enough, even as nervous as he is about her existing right this second, he doesn't suspect she'd have poisoned the food. People didn't tend to do that back in Neo Tokyo.

Still... his eyes don't leave her, nor do they lose their intensity. Every little thing she does or says is monitored and analyzed; he's paying more attention to her right now than he has to almost anyone before.

When one of his closest friends could...do that to him, why would he be safe with anyone around? Anyone he hasn't been in the head of... Anyone he doesn't know how to predict. Any one of them could do the same thing, and how would he know.

A lot of people probably want to hurt him, Maya. And right now?

All of them could. There's no such thing as safety.]

[She lets out a breath, waiting for him to speak-- but he doesn't. She looks at the floor, lowering her hands into her lap. There has to be some way to earn this kid's trust-- but she's sure that for now, it just isn't going to work.]

Well, um. Let me know if youuuu want more of those, okay?

[Slowly, she shifts position so she can scoot back a foot or so before she stands up, heading for the door. As she lays her fingers on the handle, she looks back over her shoulder at this kid, and she can't help but pity him.

She knows, in a way, what it's like to be betrayed by someone who claimed to love you. Of course he must still be afraid. So, of course, she has to be patient.]
