[Maya doesn't shush him, doesn't tell him not to cry. She doesn't even stop herself from crying with him, albeit much more quietly, holding on to him as though somehow her tiny frame can be the strength he needs to keep himself on his feet.

And then he starts to apologise, to Tetsuo, loudly and full of pain, with a sincerity that she's not even sure she's been able to reach in mourning. And her heart aches for him, and she holds him tighter, and she just tries to breathe. There's nothing that Maya can do or say right now that will help him, not more than pouring his heart out will. So she steels her wits, buries her face in his shoulder, and rides out witnessing that pain from him.

She can't give him Tetsuo back, not the way he used to be. She can't change anything about this. But she can hold onto him, and she can carry the weight with him for a little while.

When Kaneda's calmed down a bit, Maya starts to rub his back, gentle and slow, and leans her head against his. Her own eyes wet with tears in her empathy, she looks up and tries to blink them back-- she should be the one being strong now. Kaneda needs her to be. She reaches one hand up to rub her fingers gently in the hair at the nape of his neck, letting out a slow sigh. There's so much she could say, but none of it would matter-- words won't help right now.

He needs someone, and she's here. For as long as he needs her, she'll stay resolute.]

[He stays like that for awhile, letting the last of those tears pour out of him, ones that might've been years old, waiting for the right time to cry. Later, Kaneda was often what he told himself. He just didn't think 'later' would come so soon.

But he's not alone. Maya's held onto him this whole time, listened to him scream without any complaint, let him use her shoulder to bury his face in when he didn't want the world to see. Gave him a place to hide until he could come out of this. The physical contact felt nice, her hand idly running circles on his back, moving up to where his hair meets his neckline and soaking in every inch of that feeling. For once, he was the one being held.

They remain there until his breathing regulates, feeling oxygen once again flowing through his lungs at a pace his body could be happy with, slowly pulling away from that shoulder. He looks about as one could expect, tears staining his face and eyes puffy. Grief's still overtaken him, he's not okay, and won't be until he sorts this out...Everything Kaneda was, the confidence, the unshakable strength, his integrity and morals, all of that was at it's weakest now.

And Maya holds all of him right now in her arms.]

I'm sorry.

[That one was to her.]

It's okay.

[Raising one of her hands to wipe the tears from his cheeks with her thumbs, Maya gives him a sad little smile. It hurts to see a friend like this, but she can't let that show, not when he needs someone. The other hand stays around him, not yet ready to let him go, to see him standing there alone and looking so much smaller than she's ever seen him look.]

Don't worry about it.

[She's quiet and calm. She can be shaken when Kaneda's alright again, when she's alone.]

[Her words, as simple as they were, and as soft as they were whispered, brought a matching smile to his face. It was anything but happy, more to try and comfort her as that cheek leans into that touch, soaking in the warmth from her fingers. It would be so easy to just sink into that feeling, let it envelope him until he fell asleep from the sheer exhaustion. His body leans into her touch, practically craving that contact now, just wanting someone...especially someone close to him to hold him and tell him it was okay.

It wasn't okay. But sometimes it's nice to hear it anyway.

But he had work to do. Tetsuo's job in Pan's scheme may be done, but Kaneda's role was just getting started. And he couldn't stand here crying about it. Maya had done so well for him, holding him at his most fragile, keeping together those pieces of him that had shattered the moment Tetsuo's heart was crushed. But she deserved to see that confidence come back, and he'd desperately fight to show her that again.]

[Never before had his voice sounded so genuine. The teasing tone isn't there, replaced with a more affectionate one. His eyes slowly open in that touch, lifting his head enough out of that hand to gently step back, shakily exhaling whatever was left of that last sob.]

[She can't keep her eyes from widening just a bit; honestly, she didn't even know Kaneda could act like this. She's never seen him as anything less than this bright light marching forward, unwavering, unaffected.

That's all he's ever shown her until now.

But this is just as much him as every other part of him is, isn't it?]

[She answers, shaking her head.]

C'mon. We should get you cleaned up, too.

[After all... Whatever's ahead isn't going to be pretty and he's not going to want to face Ken and the others with a face all red from crying.]
