01. coffee shop
[It's a sunny afternoon in Herpoa. And while Light often regards the weekends as the same as weekdays (with just less to do on the schedule), a rare part of him is actually enjoying the easygoing nature of the day.
"Easygoing", of course, being a relative term.
The cafe is fairly busy this afternoon. The hustle and bustle and murmur of the crowd forces his mind to keep focused on the book he's reading, while people pass by his little table for two, laughing and talking and, generally, being loud. It's a concentrated effort, forcibly reading and comprehending Dostoyevsky while distractions swirl around him; and -- for whatever many reasons that define Light as the person he is -- he's actually enjoying himself.
As it turns out, there's not very many open seats left outdoors. The chair across from him, however, remains empty and up for grabs, if anyone passing by should need it.]
02. coffee shop redux
[Light's incredibly focused state only proves to tempt fate, however. For a long while, he reads without incident -- until a group of young teenagers, attentions pointed amongst themselves and not at their surroundings, bump into Light's table. Being a rather small piece of furniture, it's not very stable to begin with; it lurches with the seemingly benign impact, tipping over his open coffee cup and spilling it across the table.
Light reacts by immediately scooting back in his chair, holding his book away from any impending coffee stains of doom. The liquid slowly spills over the edges of the table and he curses under his breath, lifting his eyes up to almost-glare at the group of teens -- who are, of course, already walking away, completely oblivious to the inconvenience they happened to cause Light.]
Figures. [He murmurs, uselessly grabbing the small napkin on his table to clean up what he can.]
03. outdoor tennis court
[Light vs. the Tennis Ball Machine. Though he'd not consider it the ideal situation, it's better than nothing. At least he seems busy enough, running about in his appropriate athletic garb, hitting the bright yellow balls back with a ferocity that should likely be reserved for human competitors.
The temperature's a bit warmer today and Light has already worked up a sweat; he's been there for awhile yet, and though it would be more prudent to take a break, the teenage boy is simply determined to keep pushing himself.
He's good, but he's only human. As his movements become more strained, a handful of the tennis balls go flying wildly, veering off to the side.
If someone happens to be watching, or just passing by closer than necessary, that someone might not appreciate being hit with said tennis ball...]
04. park bench
[And sometimes, he just wears himself out.
It's late afternoon , and though he'd never say so out loud, his feet hurt. There's a small wooden bench near a shade tree that looks more than inviting, and a minute later and Light is seated, leaning back and heaving a slow sigh. He closes his eyes and brings a hand up to pinch the bridge of his nose. He feels the dull throb of a headache coming on. Maybe he should stop by the drugstore later.
He adds it to the list of Things To Do Later, but allows himself respite for now.]
05. choose your own adventure
[OOC: Wildcard! Or if you want me to set up a starter, just PM me and I'll happily do so.]
no subject
I mind very terribly. [He says in a way that means he actually doesn't mind at all, jokingly indignant.] Don't you know this bench has my name on it?
no subject
[She playfully leans back and peeks over the back to see if she can find this fictional name-scratching. It comes easily enough, with one arm hanging off the back, and an easy smile settling over her mouth.]
no subject
Maybe.
[He leans back into the bench a little more comfortably before remarking:]
Isn't it a bit hot to be running around with such - er, fervor?

[New York born and bred or not, Kate isn't going to get lazy, or her definition of it.
She can't help people that way. Some (most ...) would say she's pushing herself too hard. She wouldn't deny that.]
no subject
Right. I forget; you were in the role of superhero long before you arrived here.
[A title he doesn't really apply to himself, despite what the government says. But that doesn't mean he isn't curious when confronted with others who seem torn from the pages of comic books.]
It's a necessity so you can always be prepared to help others?
no subject
And that's basically it. I ... lost a pretty bad fight before I ended up here, too. I should've been able to manage it, so admittedly, I'm pushing myself extra hard.
no subject

[It's actually not that surprising in hindsight, but Kate had naively believed that she could go out there and have a vacation and time away from everything in New York City.
But as it goes, it was definitely a naive action.]
no subject
[It all sounds so cliche, but it's fascinating that there's the potential it's not too far from the mark in some cases.]
Sorry, you don't actually have to tell me if you don't want. I'm just endlessly curious, you know.
no subject
Supervillains ... to a degree. It's more like a woman and her organization have taken over the city and control and mess with anyone they want. No real powers, just ... bad news. [And frankly, she's worried about her ability to do any real good there.
Kate won't tell anyone, but it's part of why she's pushing herself so aggressively here.]
no subject
Well if any of us imPorts manage to find a way back to our worlds, I wish you the best of success in dismantling such an organization. [A pause.] I know how frustrating it can be to be torn away from something important like that.
no subject
no subject
[Though the statement itself is said just to buy time, as he considers what to say to that.]
But yes, you'd be right. Concerning my situation, I was in the middle of helping law enforcement solve a murder case [not a murder, but multiple murders; he's keeping it as simple as he can] before I arrived here.
no subject
Back home, that is. She doesn't really care about what Miles Edgeworth has to say about what she's up to.]
I can't imagine being pulled away from something more organized. Especially if you have leads.
no subject
[But. Well. He'd do best not to linger on such thoughts; it doesn't do well for his mood. (Or his headache.)]
So you've worked on investigations before too?
no subject
[The job would be a lot less high maintenance otherwise. Seeking out the cause ended up becoming a bigger job than she expected, and Kate has a feeling it's going to get worse.
Much worse.]
Before that, most of my work happened to be more on the hero side of things. I looked into things, but it was more on the fly.
no subject
I'd like to think that investigating can still be considered "heroic" work. Solving crimes, putting criminals behind bars, aiding society; if you think of it like that it's pretty noble.
And if you like figuring out puzzles, there's nothing more satisfying.
no subject
[In a way, the "Hero for Hire" thing was wishful thinking. It turned out that looking into what makes a hero who works small scale things meant trying to figure out how to do things the average way.
Of course, Kate won't completely admit that embarrassing lesson.]
no subject
[He's interested, but this time not due to curiosity alone; if there are others who are inclined to take part in investigations, whether registered or unsettled, he needs to make sure to make the proper connections.]
no subject
What she does clarify is her training here.] Without picking up detective work on the fly, I've had more of an opportunity to sit down and look into the proper procedures I should be following. It's ... helped.
no subject
[A pause.]
I'm always interested in continuing detective work, even in Heropa. Seeing as my goal was always to eventually join law enforcement, I can't start slacking, even in a strange, alternate-universe world.
What I'm getting at is -- if you ever need any help or assistance concerning criminal investigations, please don't hesitate to ask me. I need to start networking.
[He already has, technically, but nothing will be satisfactory enough for him.]
no subject
[She's sincere in her tone, especially since Kate has a feeling that nearly anyone around her has more experience. Taking that help isn't a bad thing. She's a team person, after all; shunning help is the last thing she'd do.]
no subject
[He would have found something else by now, if not for the fact he's actually been putting a priority on his university education first.]
no subject
And I assume murder investigations are what you prefer?
no subject
[He gives a short laugh at that.] I wouldn't quite put it that way, since it kind of makes me sound like a morbid person. Criminal investigations in general are what interests me.
