Catch-all for post Pan encounters
1/
2/ if i replaced their names with kikyo kagome and inuyasha this would still make perfect sense
One day, the couch seat is still warm when Tetsuo shuffles out to sit there. Kaneda is in the kitchen, and Ken was staring at a homework assignment he couldn't concentrate on. By the time Tetsuo enters the room all that's left is a sheet of binder paper Ken forgot to take with him, the boy's name printed neatly at the top but none of the questions he copied down solved. There's a huge wrinkle in one corner though, like he'd crushed it with his hand once or twice.
One day, during one of the times that Kaneda and Tetsuo are sitting together, Ken nearly walks in on them before he sees them. His eyes meet Tetsuo's for a fraction of a moment before the surprise turns into something dark, dark, and sad and he turns on his heels to leave the house through the back door.]
3/ i apparently haven't left inuyasha hell yet
But then he hears Maya's voice join the conversation and it hits him like a cold, cold wave: the realization that whatever world that was created now, Ken Amada wasn't, and couldn't, be a part of it. He and Tetsuo cannot be happy together.
That night, Ken packs a small bag of clothes and Koromaru's essentials, their weapons, tells Bull and Kaneda -- the first time he really spoke to he latter since returning from the jungle -- and leaves the house for what he's sure will be the last time.]
/4; this dated to January 15
He's not here to be back. No, he still knows that he and Tetsuo are better off without each other. But there's a hatred here that they both think the other has for them, and that's something Ken, now, cannot stand. He wants at least to try one more time. Not ask for Tetsuo's acceptance, but to tell him, promise him, that Ken doesn't want to take anything away from him. That he won't.
He's not expecting to run into him so quickly once he's inside, and especially not without Kaneda. He doesn't know where he is, although Kala-Nemi shifts inside him, picking up the way he instinctively and subconsciously searches for clues of the guy's presence. So he knows he's there; there's the faint sound of him humming, a movement upstairs, the jacket hanging from Tetsuo's shoulders -- and Ken pushes back the urge to walk right out of the door.
Instead, he bites his lip and makes himself as small as possible in the corner. He has to say something. He came here to say this. Tetsuo is right there, but he could go away at any moment.]
... Tetsuo-san, [he manages to say in a voice so quiet it could fade away at any moment.]

Ken Amada.
Amada was a ghost in the house as much as Tetsuo wanted to be, when he wasn't spending his time as stuck to Kaneda - under Kaneda's shadow - as he could. It's a rare thing for Tetsuo to be alone; here, where everyone has powers, he's never been so vulnerable, and it shows in the haunted way his eyes glance around the room as he moves about. Of course, that's exactly how the kid catches him, exposed and easily within attack range.
Amada almost killed him once, and how many times could Tetsuo have killed him...? The kid would have every reason to do it now, when there's nothing Tetsuo can do.
Had he said nothing, Tetsuo would have turned and left as fast as possible without making it look like he was running or anything. But he does, and what Tetsuo hears is enough to make him hesitate, frozen almost like a deer on the highway. There's too much quiet to the kid's voice. Too much uncertainty, where there should be accusation.
And a new mug with Tetsuo's name on it in the kitchen.]
Amada.
[Good, they know each other's names, glad they established this.
It may seem odd that Tetsuo never insisted on, or even suggested a name shift back... but he does everything he can to distance from a family name. Even now, just "Tetsuo" is fine.]

His breath is audibly trembling as he inhales]
... You're back. I'm glad. I'm glad he got you back.
[That's hardly everything he wants to say. He doesn't know what all he wants to say. He falls quiet after that again, quieter than he already was.]

It'd been a few years, maybe, since the mere sight of Kaneda didn't send him into a rage deep down. Everything was always better without him!
Or so he'd thought. It'd taken actually getting tossed to the curb and traded out for someone better to drive the point home, leaving him crying and screaming internally at the world on the bed, fury and loathing wrapping themselves down to the core of his being, and not even understanding why it bothered him so much.
It took dying to get Kaneda to give a damn again.
He could only imagine how it must feel for Amada now. In fact, he'd been counting on it; that small part of him left with enough fire to find vengeful thoughts looked back on it with a dark satisfaction. Suck it. And, another part with extreme trepidation. What was he going to do...?
Kaneda's not here. But would it really change anything if he was? He never stopped the kid from trying to kill him before. If it'd been him instead of Pan who did it, would Kaneda still give a shit? Lost in his own racing mind, Tetsuo misses the fact Amada's trembling, but it's impossible to miss the shiver in his voice. The first real clue that something is still off about all this, and he still can't find what.
The longer Amada talks, the more blankly confused Tetsuo looks. It's just like with the candy when he ran away, just like with the mug before, and that bowl. He can't even begin to understand that position, too mired in his own worldview.]
...what?
[He matches quiet anxiety with quiet disbelief.]

He told himself he would be okay with that, too.
He wasn't, but it was still a choice he made. Tetsuo and Kaneda cannot go back anymore, but they could gain something here. They could gain the thing that Ken had been given the chance to seek, and he wanted to give them that same chance, too. No matter how much it hurt. No matter how many times Tetsuo hurt him. Even if it meant giving up the first place he called home since his mother's death.
This fight has been for Kaneda, and it will always have been for Kaneda.]
He was hurting, the whole time you were gone. No matter what happened, his thoughts always went back to you.
[He closes his eyes and shakes his head.]
With you back, that hole in him might finally close again.

He can't look at the kid suddenly, eyes narrowing at the carpet, picking out nonexistent shapes from the shadows cast by fibers. It's what he wants to believe now, which is why that cannot be the truth; life's not that generous. Kaneda even told him, head buried in his hair, ruffling it with every shaky breath, that he'd needed him all along. Called him his brother.
Soaking Kaneda's shoulder with tears, Tetsuo accepted it. The fear of losing whatever he had left was too strong.
But with Ken Amada come other memories, dug into his mind like splinters. It wasn't Tetsuo's defense that Kaneda came to. Which was fine, he hadn't needed it, he lived.
Until Kaneda came to Amada's instead.
Suddenly, the doubt's weaving itself back into his mind, seeping poison into anything until he's left miserable and painfully unable to hide his shame. Tetsuo doesn't seem aware he's retreating back to older behavior patterns, shifting uneasily as he listens.]
Don't.
[He won't deny, now, that he thought about Kaneda a lot. He would deny he thought about him more than he had Kaori, but there was truth to that statement as well. Even then; it was one sided. He'd been so sure that when Kaneda said they were done... they'd been done.
Not looking back up, he continues in that strange, subdued manner he'd adjusted to. Quiet. Defeated.]
Kaneda never had a problem finding people. It's what he does.
[Except Kaneda didn't find him. Why was that, Amada? If you've got all the answers? ...But Tetsuo doesn't ask that question. He couldn't handle the answer right now, if the kid knows.]
