WARNINGS: Traumatic memories. Possible talk of murder, death, blood, other nasty things. I'll try to update if the warnings needed but please use content warnings if it gets super nasty!

It starts off on March 4th, the early morning before the sun's even risen. You know those weird mirages that were hanging around the day before? Well now it's getting a little personal.

These mirages come and go seemingly for no reason. They might stay for a minute, they might stay for an hour. The images vary between person but the unifying factor is that the mirages consist of people the player characters have hurt, whether people in-game or from their homes. Whether they murdered them, slandered them, or even had a petty little argument, the unifying factor is the guilt each character feels towards or about this mirage. After all, you know you hurt them somehow. You know their existence somehow makes you feel guilty.

Another unifying factor? The creepy way these mirages just seem to stick to you. They'll follow you if you try to leave, staring you down with their creepy unblinking mirage eyes. And whoops: everybody can see said mirages. Hopefully you're not being stalked by someone you and somebody else both know, wouldn't that be awkward?

[ There's a long pause, where Julian keeps working (he's writing up a new work schedule. He always does this. It's really not that helpful) and doesn't respond immediately. ]

Some months before I was last in my own world, Killer Moth asked me to help him make a name for ourselves. He let me schedule it. A simple kidnapping job.

[ He looks up at the three of the ghosts. ] I made him promise not to kill them. Not even after we got the ransom. I should have known better.

[ Julian stares at them, because it's easier to face their judgement than the Doctor's. ]

They survived. Their death-dates were avoided. But it was close.

[ There's a long pause. Because honestly? This isn't as bad as he thought. Oh sure, the kidnapping and ransom was awful, bad form, points taken off for blatant supervillainy.

But Calendar Man didn't want the three of them to be killed. And really, in the long scheme of things, that's what's important. That puts him further up in the Doctor's good graces than Julian can ever imagine.

Of course, the Doctor decides to focus on something else entirely. ]

Is he an actual moth or is this another Batman sort of thing?

[ Julian blinks in surprise. That's... not the reaction he was expecting at all. ]

Exactly like Batman. Killer Moth modelled himself after Batman, but in the reverse.

[ Julian doesn't know about Charaxes, thanks pullpoint ]

I really need to have a talk with your world about naming.

[ The Doctor responds with a huff, as he rolls his eyes. His expression softens for a bit as he gives Julian a small smile. ]

For what it's worth, I'm proud of you.

[ Honestly thrown for a loop with that last remark. He frowns at the Doctor. ]

Why would you be proud?

You made him promise not to kill them! I mean, the kidnapping's bad but I robbed a bank one time and technically stole my TARDIS so it's a bit pot kettle black if I judge you too hard on the kidnapping. But not killing? That's good! And, based on what I know about your Gotham, a bit harder than expected for a lot of people.

[ why does Gotham have so many homicidal super villains: the world may never know. ]

[ Julian is completely gobsmacked. He honestly doesn't know how to feel about this. ]

Yes, there are few that share my reluctance. Murder is so crude, but none of them seem to be able to see it.

Plus, it's just so permanent. Hostages can always be released and money can always be returned, but there's usually no take-backs on death.

[ not that he has any experience with that or anything (oh god he has so much experience with that, he's kind of killed some dudes) ]

Yes. Just another day in their life. But that is no longer the case if it becomes the last day of their life.

Everything ends at some point, [ the Doctor remarks, with an idle little shrug. ] There's no reason for anybody to end something before it's supposed to stop.

Exactly. [ For possibly the first time since the apparitions appeared, Julian relaxes. It's oddly good to know the Doctor is on the same page as him on this. ]

Many don't believe me.
