It starts off on March 4th, the early morning before the sun's even risen. You know those weird mirages that were hanging around the day before? Well now it's getting a little personal.

These mirages come and go seemingly for no reason. They might stay for a minute, they might stay for an hour. The images vary between person but the unifying factor is that the mirages consist of people the player characters have hurt, whether people in-game or from their homes. Whether they murdered them, slandered them, or even had a petty little argument, the unifying factor is the guilt each character feels towards or about this mirage. After all, you know you hurt them somehow. You know their existence somehow makes you feel guilty.

Another unifying factor? The creepy way these mirages just seem to stick to you. They'll follow you if you try to leave, staring you down with their creepy unblinking mirage eyes. And whoops: everybody can see said mirages. Hopefully you're not being stalked by someone you and somebody else both know, wouldn't that be awkward?

I figured that now, or I'd have been able to slug him for not answering me.

[Yuu never claimed to be the most disciplined. And given Guren as a role model, well. It's little wonder he acts up at times out of frustration or sheer defiance.]

I'm just wondering if that's true then what's going on? I mean, he was here before but it's still weird. Like some sort of memory or ghost, maybe. I dunno. Someone's power or experiment going nuts or something?

[Or some weird ploy from the Soviets again? Yuu can't be sure immediately. But that seems a decent enough guess given how things often go around here, from his months here thus far.]

Could be either of those. Or something else. It's hard to tell.

[Jacob raises an eyebrow at Yuu.]

Do you... Always hit your superiors?

I wonder if there's a way to figure out what's going on. I'm not sure it's just me....

[But then he glowers, crossing his arms at his chest as he snorts.]

When my superior is a jerk who avoided me last time he actually showed up here, and owes me an explanation for stuff back home, yeah! I'll punch him in the face. He got in plenty of hits while he was training me.

[And usually kicks Yuu right back in retaliation, barking at the teen to not go around attacking his superiors like that. Yuu has a much more casual, almost familial relationship with Guren after all, in comparison to any of the other higher ups in the military, given Guren was the one to take him in.]

Huh. Okay, then.

[Jacob makes a mental note not to be Yuu's direct superior if the kid ever joins RISE. It sounds like the chain of command works a little differently in his world.]

It probably isn't you. In my experience, the weirder something is here, the more imPorts it's affecting. At least this... thing isn't hurting anybody.

Besides, he's...I mean, Guren's my superior, but before then, when he took me in and all, he's more like family than that. If that makes sense.

[So Yuu's a lot more casual with Guren in comparison to the other higher ranking head honchos in the military, of course, because of that. Not that this means he gets away with it. Guren usually retaliates by kicking him right back and barking at him not to go around attack his superiors, of course.]

No. It's not like this....not-Guren has attacked me or anything.

So you're family that hits each other. All right.

[Jacob just shrugs and accepts it. What else can he do?]

Do you have any idea what he wants? He's just... standing there. It's a little uncomfortable.

I know, my relationship with him probably isn't...er, normal or whatever. But that's just how we are.

[It's possible it's even debatable whether Guren officially actually adopted him or not when he took Yuu in. But regardless, everyone knows Yuu is Guren's little brat of a protege.]

I dunno. I tried asking him and talking to him but. Like you said, he just kind of stands there watching me. Following me around.

I'm sorry. That must be tough to deal with.

[Jacob said, blissfully unaware that his own father is about to manifest later today.]

What kind of information did you want from him anyway? Must have been pretty important.

[Since he was willing to punch Guren over it and all.]

A lot has been tough. Just have to keep moving on. Keep moving forward regardless. Being with him, the military, it was still better than the underground city.

[At least in terms of actually getting proper food regularly, having a bed. Doesn't change that it was lonely, that he lived with the guilt over leaving Mika, the trauma of seeing the rest get killed. Guren wasn't so bad in comparison to dealing with the vampires, in any case.]

Y-yeah, well. One of the vampires said something...that Mika told me. I want to find out what he meant when he said he knew Guren years ago. And what he did at Nagoya....

[Stabbing Yuu with tears in his eyes. Yuu wants to find out what was going on there. Because that couldn't have been Guren. He needs to find out more if he is to help somehow.]

Nagoya?

[Jacob tilts his head, curious. He hasn't heard that name before.]

Nagoya's the last battle we had, where it was, I mean. Not that I quite remember it, but Mika caught me up on more of what happened back home. It...was the second time I lost control. I'd not seen Guren for a bit by then, he'd been captured by the vampires as far as I knew, so I was glad. But then he stabbed me. He was crying, and his eyes were...I don't think it was really him, but I'm still not sure why he did it.

[The red of his eyes gave some credence to his being possessed, the same way Yuu gets with his own Cursed Gear, Ashuramaru. Guren's being the same type with his - Mahiru. It's not really something Yuu's talked on much. Outside of perhaps Mika and Nike, mostly. But he trusts Jacob.]

[Jacob knows a thing or two about being betrayed by father figures. But this doesn't sound like the same thing at a ll.]

Maybe he was mind controlled. Or maybe-

[He pauses.]

You told me before that your powers are dangerous if you lose control. Maybe he felt he didn't have any other way to stop you.

I didn't lose control until after that though. I mean, it could be that his demon was in control, from his Cursed Gear.

[Probably. And yet Yuu still feels there's more he is missing. From Guren having some sort of connection to the vampires, or at least Ferid in particular, let alone the drug that Ferid gave him being the same used to control Guren's demon, supposedly.]

[That gets a blink from Jacob. He looks over at 'Guren.']

So he's like you? His power can take over if things go wrong?

He's not a seraph like I am but. All of us with Cursed Gear, there's a risk that the demon will take over.

[Which is a risk they all take. It almost happened to Yoichi when they took their exam to get their Cursed Gear. It's just not as destructive as the sort of damage and brutality of the seraph. What Yuu is really capable of. Even if it's difficult, when they could be ordered to take down a squad member in such a case, if their demon takes full control.]
