November Swear-In -- Virtual Reality Edition!
WHO: November Swear-In!
WHERE: An auditorium in Heropa... technically.
WHEN: November 11
WHAT: A whole lot of virtual reality.
WARNINGS: Completely optional insanity effects possible (see the OOC post and links below for details). Otherwise totally peewee-friendly.
The physical location of the swear-in is an auditorium in Heropa, where guests are greeted by ushers, shown to a seat, and then told to take out their phones and plug them into an outlet set into their chair. It's a bit like being in a movie theatre with nothing on screen-- the seats are comfortable, the lighting ambient, and once the phone is plugged in, a message pops up.

Hi! Welcome to the Vivarium!
This is a virtual reality [link] experience unlike any you've experienced before. The Vivarium is fully immersive in every way and almost indistinguishable from your living embodied self. By hitting yes below, you agree to that experience and any potential existential questioning that may arise as a consequence.
Inside you'll find a variety of settings and activities. At any time you can bring up the control scheme and opt to fast-warp to a different setting, or to leave. You can also alter your own appearance or locate others, contact them, and fast-warp to their location.
The Vivarium is not dangerous. Things that occur inside the VR environment will not impact your physical body. At the end, you will come back to yourself in your chair either at the end of these three hours, or when you choose to, whichever comes first.
If you have any prevailing concerns, please use your control scheme to contact the administrator and programmer, Catherine Chun [link], or for emergency responses, contact security [link].
Thank you, and enjoy!

YES, TAKE ME IN! | NOT INTERESTED |
> APPLE PICKING.
Everyone spawns in in a classic apple orchard, long austere rows of grown apple trees broken by messy sweeps of leaves and fallen apples on the ground. There's mysteriously no employees around, just empty old-style wooden buckets and a long expanse of clear blue sky. The air is shockingly crisp, the scent of leaves on the wind is pungent, and overall the whole experience is as real as one could ask. Even eating one of the apples (encouraged!) tastes like an apple. You aren't sure how, but you remain convinced it tasted like an apple, despite the taste itself not really coming through…
Have fun wandering around socializing, catching people as they try to reach the higher-up apples on the trees, or go exploring-- because there's a lot more out there. If you don't use the control scheme, you can reach two of the other three environments just by legging it. At some point as you walk through the surrounding forest, it turns from deciduous to tropical, and the rushing roar of water comes to your ears as you approach a waterfall with a long, impossible drop off. A prompt comes up in front of your eyes as you stand near the edge:

At some point as you walk through the surrounding forest, it turns from deciduous to tropical, and the rushing roar of water comes to your ears as you approach a waterfall with a long, impossible drop off. A prompt comes up in front of your eyes as you stand near the edge:
| > UNDERWATER. J U M P If you follow the instructions, you go soaring down the hundred meter fall, simulated air whipping past you. You hit the water and cut through it as smoothly as butter, with no impact at all, and somewhere in the transition find you have diving gear on, or can mysteriously breathe without difficulty. Whichever one your character would default to. The surface disappears as the momentum carries you down and down, and soon the only source of light is the ambient blue glow of an installation on the ocean floor. You can explore the echoing, empty halls and industrialized structures and find clues of the former habitants, who seem to have been deep sea miners and scientists. If you fast-warp in, that's where you'll arrive, and you'll have to go out the airlock to reach the water. Or you can explore the ocean surroundings, which are all fantastical and not remotely Earth-like: gentle giants, elaborate coral reefs in the shallows, kelp forests, corpses of terrifying megafauna, or get into trouble exploring with some of the more predatory creatures. | > HAUNTED MANSION. If, instead, you keep venturing through the woods, time starts to pass more rapidly, almost without you noticing. The canopy of leaves obscures the light increasingly as you go on, until the bright mid-morning of the orchard is overtaken by dim twilight. Inexorably, you will eventually find the requisite spooky mansion in the woods, yard overgrown if it ever existed at all. The eerie encroaching darkness of the surroundings makes the single flickering candle in an upper story window all the more stark. Upon entering the house into the grand foyer, characters will be prompted again: ARE YOU A GHOST? If they say yes, congratulations, they are now playing the part of the ghost haunting the mansion! They can lure other characters, play tricks on them, and plant clues about their creepy backstory. They will find themselves now invisible on command, able to pass through walls, and fly, as long as they stay within the confines of the house. Feel free to write this whichever way you wish-- this can be as genuinely scary or as silly as you like. Just make sure you don't scare someone so much they call security! |
> ISOLATED ROOFTOPS.
Need some peace and quiet? You can go to some isolated urban rooftops overlooking a bustling futuristic city at the hush of dawn, accessible only by control scheme command. The only noises are the faint trickles of people getting up to start their day, walking around below like smears of ink on the ground, so far away on your elevated rooftop as to be indistinct. Standard video game invisible barriers prevent you from jumping off this one, and there's no rooftop access door to explain how you got up here.
It's just tranquil, and very little else: the quintessential space to think. If you run into someone else on the same rooftop, you can fast-warp out and respawn on a different one to get some privacy, or you can share it. Although… being too alone might be a bad idea, as thinking too much, being too introspective, is one of the fastest ways to start going insane.

Doctor: Contact?
Doctor: Force of habit, don't think that really applies here, you've gotten rid of powers, haven't you Catherine?
[ which he's noticed by his inability to pull chalk from hammerspace as well as the general weirdness that he's feeling because there's no way on earth Catherine could know how to code in a Time Lord and their weird timey wimey bits. ]
Doctor: Mind granting me code access? I think I can patch in my proper biology.
[ it's not that the Doctor'll be a nosy little shit and poke around at things that don't need to be poked at, HEAVENS no, this is all just alien nonsense. ]

It's enough to make him reach out to the admin, because he can't leave well enough alone. It's not just text that he sends with, but sound, an visceral digital voice, that seems to come from...somewhere. [CLOSED]
She's high energy right now, flicking here and there throughout the system, in her element as she checks on things and makes sure there aren't any security breaches. In her effusion of energy, she finds the time to split her attention as any computer worth its salt in processing power would, and flickers into existence in front of one of her... well, she wouldn't call them friends, but... acquaintances from meat space.
Her eyes are bright and, notably, her hair is a bit different from her physical body's-- it's shorter, matching her image of herself, and she's wearing a futuristic cheongsam and pants in orange, yellow and teal. Altogether a very distinct figure, in personality and appearance, from how she is in the physical world.
"Hey! Having fun? Isn't this great?"

Betty hadn't exactly known what to expect on logging in, but the sight of her housemate was actually less startling than the rows of trees casting shadows in the sun. It takes her a moment - the moment Catherine greets her - to remember this is a virtual reality.
"This is incredible! I can... I can smell them!" And touch them. There's a lot of tree touching happening here. She knows what you've said, but this is really something else.

UNDERWATER, Skeets can be found inside the installation, examining the clues left behind. ] Fascinating.
[ In the HAUNTED MANSION, skeets says yes to ghost on a lark and is soon floating around invisible, going through walls. When he spots someone, he realizes he has to play the role. Floating behind them, he suddenly turns visible and says: ] I believe my line is "boo".

OTA
[Hello, imPorts. Are you in the apple orchard? Underwater? In the haunted mansion? It doesn't really matter where you are, because no matter what, Khaji Da's appearance and demeanor will not change, no matter what. In the midst of all the imPorts, there is something that looks like the Blue Beetle, suit and all, but if you know him? You know something's off.
He is standing absolutely motionless, eerily so. Instead of his usual human tics that show through his body language, whether he's slouching or giving someone a thumbs up, he is standing straight and tall with absolutely perfect posture, arms hanging loosely at his sides, legs held shoulder-width apart.
Oh, yeah -- and he doesn't have a face. Where there's usually a face, there's simply an empty mask of black.]
[ B ; KHAJI DA (with Jaime) ; please contact me first before choosing this option because of secret ID shenanigans! I'm open to plotting this out, but definitely want to chat first. ]
[This option right here is more or less the same as the above. Khaji Da is present, faceless mask and all, and is standing perfectly, eerily still. Except this time there's something that's making him look a lot more approachable, and that's the kid standing beside him. Jaime has a very strong self-image and looks basically the same as ever, only right now, he's busy letting out an excited yell (okay, an excited shriek) as he jumps a mile high, seeing Khaji right there, in front of him.
It's not long until Jaime launches himself at Khaji (who's dutifully taller than he is, which is just rude) and wraps his arms around his neck, giving our resident creepy AI one hell of a greeting.] Oh my god! It's you! You have a body here!
Correct.
That's so awesome!
[Khaji doesn't respond. Nor does he hug back, actually, but that doesn't seem to deter Jaime.]
[NOTE: This is a funny case, so if you want to chat more about Khaji Da, please feel free to contact me HERE. Jaime is also available alone upon request!]
B
He's a netnavi here, and he moves through virtual space quite happily. He doesn't have his gliding functions - here, in such a tightly coded space, there's no room for his own powers to breathe - but it's impressive work, so he doesn't mind a bit. ]
Well, it looks like the two of you are having fun. [ His voice is warm, and slightly amused. Jaime being happy is nice to see.
If there's anything that pings him about a certain secret identity, well...he just doesn't mention it. ] Who's your friend here, Jaime?

There an anger in how she moves, a warning, as she shakes off the initial entry. It does feel very real from the weight of the sword at her hip to the slightly itchy way her armor feels against her skin.
A. Orchard
Mako lifts her chin to take in the new area. It's pretty, the greens greener, the reds redder. She reaches to take an apple from a low hanging branch and realizes she's too short. Way too short.
So she glares at it for awhile before breaking out a sword that really should be used to stab at apples.
Too bad. This was war.
B. Are You A Ghost?
Yes. Mako's pretty sure she's been a ghost since her family died. A really angry, Kaiju hunting ghost. Her choice is more instinct than it is actual thought. The fact that she can drift through walls is pretty cool, though.
Is she supposed to feel cold?
She floats along behind someone and she's not quite sure she recognizes them so she reaches out with a soft unintelligible query. It's disconcerting that her fingers pass through their shoulder.
C. Rooftops
Mako sits on the edge of the rooftop, thinking, her sword across her lap, glinting as she touches the bright metal blade with her fingertips. Like her father had told her once before, it is a sword that is perfect, as it has been folded a thousand times, the steel strong, the blade sharpened without equal. She is that blade, she always has been. The Marshal had showed her how to sharpen herself year after year, how to hone herself into something deadly.
And now she was here.
Was she still supposed to be that sword? Still deadly, watchful against attack, was she supposed to be as open as she was? Her hair whips across her face and she ignores it. What did her life outside of her own world truly mean? Was peace or comfort something she ought to be allowed? Or was she supposed to be a sentinel, waiting. Waiting for a Breach.
All her life she had been waiting. Perhaps that was what she was made for, to wait for Kaiju to come, to wait with her sword at the ready, like a Jaeger waiting for its pilots in a bay long silent.
C
And she was younger, somehow. Younger and ancient, with an aura of danger. Betty was also changing, appearance years lifting when caught up in wonder only to snap back when her own dark shadows caught up to her along with the empty decades before and behind. But although she might forget to tire as easily here as home, she was who she was now down to the core.
She walked toward the figure poised at the rooftop's edge, paused, and then resumed less cautiously. She might not know much about swords, but she knew when a weapon was a person and a person, a wound. "Mako. Miss Mori. Are you all right?" And there was also the literal sword to consider.

> Apple picking.
[But a good deal away from the orchard. Betty's walked herself into another biome, from temperate to subtropical to what feels like rainforest and the air is so moist she needs to work to breathe. It could be worse; the transition is so smooth she imagines she could have just as easily wound up in a polar desert had she walked the other way.
As it is, she's dipped into the character creation options to pick out something a little more weather appropriate. Without a sexy armor option, she's decided to use this excuse to... be an orc? It's novel and a little less stifling this way. How hard can it be to recognize the bigger, greener version of someone you may already know?]
> Isolated rooftops.
[Make that a formerly isolated rooftops. Betty spawns on yours, fully human although a little less drawn than she appears in meat-space nowadays. After taking a moment to reorient herself to being much higher up than expected, she makes a clear beeline for the other occupying silhouette. Were you trying to brood? It would be rude to > RUN. away now. Social niceties activate their trap card.]
Option 3 Underwater Installation?
It was all made up by Catherine, but the people there, they'd been her friends once. Before they all died out.
Daryl was recognizable, but only just. His winged vest prominent over his even bulkier shoulders. He was shorter, though, and what skin was visible was covered in ugly scars that in real life had long since faded away. His shaggy hair was now a curtain completely obscuring his face. The only pretty thing about him was a very delicate looking chain on his wrist made of blue and gold metal.
If he noticed a difference in his appearance from reality to virtual reality, he didn't act like it. He just nodded at Betty as she appeared and gave a soft greeting.]

Abigail Fowler | OTA
Abigail: Hello?
Abigail: The fuck is this?
> Underwater.
Of course she would choose to jump. She can't swim well and has never gone diving, but when the other options seem so mundane, and there's a whole ocean stretched before her, she takes the leap. Now, she has managed to find a kelp forest where the only sounds are clicks and pops of underwater creatures, and the echo of her own breathing in her full-face dive mask.
And...whatever that noise was.
Abigail whips around, the resistance of the water making her movement a slow-motion parody of panic.
Theon Greyjoy | OTA
[ Without giving it a second thought, Theon had outright refused to swear his devotion to the military. He's turned his cloak once already, and he saw where that landed him. He doesn't intend to turn it once more.
He remains afterwards for the sake of convenience. He's already here, he has noplace else he cares to visit tonight, so he joins the others in the strange auditorium. When he spawns in the virtual world, he looks as close to himself as he can get, bow and quiver and all. When your physical appearance really is the only solid thing you know about yourself, you tend to cling to it.
You can find him in the orchard for some time, not picking apples, but using them for target practice. He's actually better than decent, hitting his mark nine times out of ten. ]
2. Rooftop
[ When the orchard fills up with more people and target shooting gets dull, peace and quiet is exactly what Theon needs. In the short time since his arrival, it feels as if he's only been going through the motions of living. Breathe in, breathe out, eat, sleep, wake up, repeat. He's been told that a job awaits him somewhere, but he's yet to attend. And why should he? He's a lord, the heir to the Iron islands--or so he thought. His expression darkens as he stares out across the synthetic skyline. His doubts begin to set in extremely quickly.
Father raised Asha as his heir, he reminds himself. And you couldn't even hold Winterfell. You allowed yourself to be manipulated. You're nothing, you've always been nothing.
He clenches his teeth, gripping the building's ledge with white knuckles. ]
Shut up.
[ He snaps at his own thoughts, hoping to quiet them, but they don't stop. If anything, they grow louder. The Starks never cared for you. You were their prisoner, remember? You were never a brother to Robb. How could you ever have been? You're not a Stark. Are you even a Greyjoy?
His breathing grows ragged and the existential crisis is a go as his doubts bombard him, one big question standing out among them: Who am I? ]
3. Chat Program
[ This message comes about while Theon is still in the throws of insanity. He's doubting things so much by this point that he can't recall how to bring up the menu. Oops. ]
Greyjoy: I want out.
Greyjoy: Please.
Greyjoy: I don't want to be here any longer.
one!
That's a waste of perfectly good apples, you know. Digital animals need to eat as well.
[ Time for another round of "is the Doctor being serious or is he just being confusing for the sake of being confusing." He takes a bite out of one of the apples, frowning slightly, before he just continues nattering on to Theon, completely not caring if he understands him or not. ]
I'm going to have to talk with whoever came up with this. This tech...it's a bit worrisome.

orchard | those poor apples...
they were clearly talking shit about him, alright :(
Kaidan Alenko | OTA
[ For some reason, Kaidan's avatar looks a lot like him down to every detail. The difference is more in his clothing, instead of normal clothing, it's armor he wears, which looks awfully odd in the middle of all the trees, but when he looks around, it's a lot more...fond than one would think from a guy who obviously looks like he belongs on a battlefield, with the high-tech armor he's wearing.
And he even reaches out to take an apple, before looking around, his lip quirked in a pretty delighted smile. ]
It's kind of weird, you know? This is actually the closest to home I've felt since coming here?
[ Ok so maybe his parents grew grapes instead of apples, but... ]
[B: Rooftops]
[ Being out in the sunshine sounds good. It is good, but... he doesn't feel at home there. He feels like he's going back in time, like he was a child again, living with his parents, figuring out that he wasn't like the other kids... being on a rooftop though, looking over the rush of lights and sound, close but far enough away that he can't hear them...
It's nice. Too nice, maybe, but... But maybe that's a good thing? He can't decide. Being up here, alone, it's easy to reflect, all the things that he'd been through, seeing a city that looks a lot more like home is... it makes him miss it. The Citadel, Vancouver, the Normandy, all of it. It's been a long two years since he went home, almost three now, and that's... that's a lot to think about, isn't it?
And if someone happened on him, he'd be sitting there, in his armor, with a look that said, very clearly, that he was thinking too hard, brows knitted, mouth down, arms looped around his knees while he looked over the city. ]
B;
Thinking.
And Ken acts quick, but not too abruptly. He crosses the rooftop toward him, but he does so quickly, and when he speaks up, he only does so after he steps around into Kaiden's line of sight, crouching in front of him.]

ulvida ★ open to all!
[Dressed in the plain white blouse and denim pants she arrived at the auditorium in, Ulvida also has her usual blue hair and blue eyes, showing an appearance that is pretty much exactly the way she looks in the outside world. However, a closer look will reveal to the detail-oriented eye, or someone more familiar with her, the little differences that can be spotted in this virtual version of her. The greatest difference is in her hair: while it usually curls in soft waves over her shoulders, here it's a little flatter and straighter, dropping limply down her back. Her shoulders are wider and her entire entire self looks more angular than it really is. Any softness she usually has about her seems to be downplayed or squashed out, replaced by a harder, more worn-out looking version of her.]
★ »» the ORCHARD
[Ulvida is not in a hurry to rush through this world, and she's more than a little cautious, so she lingers in the orchard and exploring it with the gingerness of a young animal taking its first steps. The disclaimer outside the system told her that it was all safe, but she doesn't immediately reach out for the apples, let alone try to eat one. She could be convinced to do so if you show her that it really is safe, but what she focuses on instead is the openness of the space, the brightness of greenery, and the stretch of the sky above. She leans to get a better look at it, squinting against the blow of the wind, and says in a hushed voice,]
It's beautiful.
[It's hard to see skies like this from De Chima, and she was inside of the sterile base of Aliea for so long. The sky is so beautiful, no matter if it's actually real or a virtual replication.]
★ »» the WATERFALL
[After some time in the orchard she starts to walk, feeling a little more daring than she did at first. She arrives at the waterfall and the prompt appears in front of her as she nears the edge, letting her know that this is the way to proceed. However, she doesn't do so immediately. There was someone who joined her on the path here -- YOU. Or YOU were already there when she arrived, or YOU arrived after her while she was watching the cascade. One way or another, you end up there. You're with her.
She turns to you before she makes her decision. When she speaks, there's no shyness behind her voice; she's more blunt than anything else, her voice not loud but still clear.] Are you going to go this way?
★ »» the CORAL REEFS
[The installation at the bottom of the water reminded her too much of a certain building that once was 'home', so she avoids that to keep swimming. In virtual reality she finds that she doesn't have to worry about breathing, so she's in the same clothes without any special apparatus, kicking herself through the water with ease even if she never swam much in her life before. It's nice when it's all data and imagination, she thinks briefly, and she keeps going until she ends up in a sunny, shallow expanse of water filled with corals like she'd never seen before. They're beautiful, and it's with an excitement that she just barely keeps under control that she swims right up to them, reaching out a hand to touch them curiously.
She's so caught up in her admiration of them that she doesn't notice, or forgets, that YOU are nearby, and she lets her guard down enough that her thought translates right into a text message sent to you: ] I've only seen something like this in photographs before.
★ »» the ROOFTOPS
[When YOU warp onto this particular rooftop, you find that you aren't alone. Ulvida is already there, standing at the railing of the rectangular space and peering down at what little she can see of the town below. She's quiet, seemingly lost in her world, but instead of touching on inner thoughts she's really just following the pinpricks of shadows on the ground below. She can't make out what they look like, but that leaves her free to make up stories about them just like she used to as a younger child.
When you arrive, she senses your presence and turns around, eyes widening in surprise or recognition. It doesn't matter here if she knows you or not. After a brief moment in which her eyes open side, she inclines her head in a small nod, uttering a soft, simple,] Hello.
Coral Reef
The world truly was an amazing work of art, wasn't it...
That message enters his head, the familiar voice catching on the edges of his mind. He knows exactly who it belongs to--really, it couldn't have been anyone else. He turns to face her, mouth agape (thankfully not needing air) as he sees her swimming not to far from him.
But she looked different than he remembers. Her body is more angular. Her clothes, even in the water, don't seem to fit the same way he remembers. The softness of her features, the way her hair doesn't naturally curve with the current. The way her eyes have a little less blue in them that he remembers. The minuscule parts of her that he remembers being so captivated by....her strength, her looks...it all seems to be off.
Like a puzzle piece that just doesn't fit right.
Then again, unnoticed by him, he can't really talk. Because he's also not exactly himself, either. Darker red hair flows around his face, skin a much healthier complexion than most would recognize. Darker green eyes that don't contrast as heavily against that red hair. He's what a child like him should look like being outside as much as he does. He looks...normal.
He looks like--
Someone else. Someone who died long ago, and he was supposed to fill the hole of in one destroyed man's heart. It's only then does he speak up, to answer back.]
It's truly something, isn't it?

ken // open to all!
[In non-virtual reality, Ken Amada is short, has hair that flips up no matter how much he combs it, and has the tips dyed a now-fading pink color (he's been too lazy to re-color it with Maya now that she's moved out). In this reality, he's a smidge taller than he actually is (a result of his ego) and has forgotten about his air color so it's all his natural brown. At the same time, he perceives his flippy hair an even more uncontrollable curl monster so it's more unruly and longer than it actually is. His features may also look a little softer than what they really are because he remembers his mother's face more strongly and they look similar. All in all, he's the same except he may look as if you took a picture of him and reflected it, so all of his features are mirrored. Uncanny!]
CHAT OPTION
[Ken has volunteered to be security today, so he can be contacted to help you with your needs no matter what your situation. He's also open for small talk too! No matter what it is you hit him up for, you will receive a relatively cheerful answer:]
Amada: Oh hello.
Amada: This is Ken! Or if if you were looking for security, I'm one of those too.
Amada: What's up?
down the WATERFALL we go
[Ken takes this VR thing like he would any other video game. Those have been growing on him. He treks through the tropical area and finds himself at the waterfall, giving a low whistle at its majesty and leaning out over the edge to look at it. The JUMP? prompt is in the way though, so he eventually sighs and straightens back up, stretching his limbs and taking a deep breaths.
He then turns to YOU, standing somewhere in the vicinity, and it doesn't matter if you know him or not as he points to the prompt floating in front of him and the water below with a grin,]
Do you want to see what's down there? On the count of three.
UNDERWATER: gentle giants
[Ken is not going to recklessly wander into danger! For once! Mostly, because he has company today. As a gigantic jellyfish-like creature floats as lazily as a sunfish above, he tilts back so he's floating on his back in the middle of the water, eyes wide and with a grin on his face before turning to YOU.]
Amada: VR isn't so bad if you get to experience something like this huh?
Amada: Do you think there's a world with something like this out there?
Amada: Let's go look for some more. Maybe we'll see something cool.
underwater
Magicman: I don't see why there couldn't be water planets out there. It's certainly not an impossibility.
[ Magicman looks like an odd fish himself as he glides through the water with little effort, doing loops around Ken just because he can. The glow of his eyes leaves little trails of light in the dark water as he moves.
He makes sure not to block Ken's view of the creatures floating by, but he thrives in the weightlessness of water. It being a digital construct just makes him feel more at home. ]
Magicman: Lead the way. I'll follow your lead, and tell you if I spot something interesting.

Mitchell Hundred | OTA
[ Mitchell Changes, at first, when he arrives. If anyone catches the Senatorial Candidate, they'll catch him standing there, looking down, around, his body shifting -- the impression of metal -- metal limbs -- is there for a moment, before it changes -- like he's mentally forcing himself to change, but with his eyebrows knitted in concentration, it's difficult. It's not unlike shifting from appearance option to appearance option, but it's obvious it's not intended.
One hand to his ear, the side of his face glowing like a damned light, the metal limbs go, replaced instead by leather, a helmet, and a jetpack -- he looks a little ridiculous, actually, but again, just like shifting through options, it's another moment before he's back in a suit and neon-green tie, an option he doesn't change -- his tie pin a gear, on his lapel an American flag pin. Like knitting things back up, there's a flash of green, muscle-like skin on the side of his face, before he closed his eyes, shook his head, and things were back to normal.
It wasn't like he was trying to look flustered, but in the entrance to all of this, he looked a little wide-eyed and flustered, jaw clenching, while he tried to work through it, and he's easily stopped, before he moves on to the first selected "environment".
Christ, he hated technological stuff. It always fucked with him. ]
[B: Underwater]
[ He doesn't "Jump" to get in the water, but when the option springs, he can see -- hear the source, what it's leading him to -- and he warps there with ease, a murmured digital command that sends a flood of green to any ears, before he appeared, adjusted his cuffs, and looked around the underwater expanse, before he looked out at the deep water through the thick glass. ]
Jesus Fuck.
[ Was his eloquent comment on that, and he stepped up to it, and looked out.
It was beautiful, sure, but it felt isolating, being underwater like this. Away from society, other people -- the chatter of people made it easier to not hear everything around him. The silence of the machines in the reality, but the simultaneous sound of the machinery that ran the program, like hearing and not hearing it all at once, his brain having to listen and see, and translate the digital realm around him, and his face -- through involuntary changing, was glowing like mad -- or maybe it was a manifestation of his own powers? ]
At least it looks pretty.
[ Even if he was getting an eerie sort of double vision from it all, and the way his eyebrows drew together, eyes closed, it was obvious he was either in pain or concentrating -- difficult to say which. ]
Underwater!
Of course none of this was real, but it felt real. She'd visited a dwarf planet once as a child, no land area at all, just one huge ocean with sprawling tunneled and domed cities weaving their way over the ocean floor. It had been the most amazing place she'd ever seen, and she'd been young enough to cry when it had been time for them to leave again. This was so much like that, it was great, how could anyone not love this??
But there was someone, as she swept past one of the wide windows, who looked like he wasn't loving this. Was that Mitch? Was he okay? He didn't look okay.
She glided up to the window and knocked lightly and waved, then zoomed off in a trail of bubbles to the airlock, and she laughed again as she landed inside, perfectly dry, and hurried off to find him.]
Mitch? Hi! This place is cool. What do you think it is, do you think it's a simulation of a real place or is it made up?
[And she sounded her usual cheerful self, but she'd never had a poker face before and she didn't have one now, she was a little worried and it showed on Supergirl's face.]

Sookie Stackhouse | OTA
[Sookie agrees to pledge her loyalty, though she does so pretty reluctantly. She's sick of having to devote herself to causes and people she has little to no real cause for, but she also knows by now that you've got to do what you need to survive. Not that, you know, she thinks she'll be hurt without pledging, but it's gonna make things easier.
She's also reluctant to agree to the whole virtual reality thing, but there's no real harm in it, she reasons. The virtual. version of Sookie isn't terribly different, just more ragged around the edges, a little bit less in every way. It's like for once she's finally reflecting how goddamn tired she is on the inside. Of course, she can't really tell, and if she could, it still would take a backseat to all of this. It's absolutely amazing, never seen a thing like it.
Sook pulls her sweater a little tighter around herself, and lets herself gape openly at the whole thing. Look, you don't get to experience stuff like this often, why try to reel in her wonder? This is some amazing stuff]
Forest and Underwater
[Sookie spends a little time hanging around the forest and waterfall before she gets the courage to age a running leap into the water. The scenery is too pretty to let behind anyway, and she spends a not insignificant about of time sitting along the edge, watching others dive in.
When she dives, Sookie very suddenly finds herself in diving gear, surrounded by an eerie but beautiful seascape. The whole thing absolutely sets her teeth on edge and she regrets jumpimg immediately. Something deep in her lizard brain shouts, tells her that she has no place being underwater like this, as unreal as it is. She's not scared- it's just seems her body instinctively knows she shouldn't be here. It's not allowed.
Sufficed to say, she finds herself inside one of the buildings very quickly.]
Isolated Rooftops
[Come to find, the rooftops are a lot less stressful than underwater. It's surreal, being surrounded by what looks like a living city and getting no brain activity, but she loves it. There's no thoughts in her head but her own for once in her life and she's content to stay here for a while. Sure, sometimes her thoughts verbalize themselves in text form, but she'll take it.
Anyone who requests to pop in gets an immediate acceptance. She's here to meet people after all.]
Rooftops!
Laurel selects the option to enter the rooftop section, amazed at how quick the transition was. She looks around for a few moments to take in her surroundings before noticing Sookie. Laurel doesn't recognise her but she doesn't hesitate in making her presence known.]
Hi, there. Sorry if I'm interrupting you.

Terry McGinnis | OTA
>Apple Orchid
[Once in his new armor, Terry makes for a curious sight as he explores his new surroundings. Rather than admire the area for what it is, he can be found knocking on trees, climbing trees, squeezing apples... basically just acting as though one has never seen a tree nor an apple before, all while moving like a wet cat because his brain hasn't fully gotten used to the idea of his new armor.
He has, of course, seen and interacted with both before. What he's actually doing is testing how realistic this new environment is and how dangerous it might be to his body back in the real world. Spellbinder's made him paranoid.
Plus, he hasn't realized anyone who might see him isn't an NPC.]
>The Waterfall
[Okay, this place is messing with him. Terry stands at the top of the cliff beside the waterfall and looks down at the water below. Everything about this seems eerily familiar--the sound of the falls, the smell of the water...
The only thing he was missing this time was the imagined swim trunks.
Rather than jump off and see where it leads, he takes a step backwards. Then another. And, just for good measure, a few more until he can no longer see the edge of the cliff. Sure, he has good reasons for this (and all of them are named "Spellbinder"), but to the person approaching behind him, it looks like he's chickening out. Feel free to call him on it.]
>Haunted Mansion
[>Are you a ghost?
>No
Though Terry chooses "no" out of confusion surrounding the question, one he took literally, thinking back to the guy he spoke with back when he first arrived who is actually dead somehow, truth be told the answer would have been the same even if he had understood it. He does more than enough sulking and sneaking and spooking people in his night job, he doesn't have to do it for fun (even if it is admittedly fun to scare the "superstitious and cowardly lot").
The question is soon forgotten as he begins to explore the house, marveling at how real everything seems, from the sounds to the smells to the touch, even if his sense of unease that he's had since entering the Vivarium never truly goes away. When he hears a noise behind him, he quickly spins around, only to see nothing. Terry's whole body language seems to change; he stands taller, and he seems more alert. The only thing he doesn't seem is scared.
Another noise, this time to his left. He spins again, reaching for something in his belt that doesn't exist in this realm. Realizing this, he drops his hand to his side as he slowly moves towards (hopefully) the source of the noise.
He's still forgotten the question he was asked when he walked in.]
Who's there?!
>Isolated Rooftops
[Curiosity leads Terry to check out the rooftop location. The other locations were starting to get a bit crowded, and he wondered exactly what kind of rooftop had been created here. He imagined something like a rooftop in his world, rooftops that never felt high enough, never felt... modern enough. The rooftops, along with nearly everything else Terry had come into contact with since arriving, just served as a reminder that he was an outsider from another time.
Instead, as he spawns to the location, he finds something that feels like home.
He can't help but smile as he looks around, taking in an unfamiliar city that feels far more familiar than any of the porter cities ever did. Terry changes back to his original outfit and zips up his jacket so the red Batman emblem sits properly on his chest. Standing there, at the edge of the roof, staring down at the blot of the fake city down below, he couldn't help but feel as if that is the way things are supposed to be.
Perhaps its for the best that someone else comes along, because their footsteps jostle Terry out of such a dangerous thought.]
Ah, jeez, you almost gave me a heart attack!

the Twelfth Doctor | ota!
[ So the problem with 'spawning in looking like how they mentally envision themselves' is that the Doctor's mental image is more of thirteen different mental images. After all, he's this Doctor but he's also the previous Doctors and wow the system has no idea how to deal with the fact that this man's also twelve other men. As such, there's a brief period after he spawned in where it takes a while for his appearance to settle, where the Doctor flits between different faces as the mind and the code try to reconcile the fact that Time Lords are weird.
Less than a minute later his features settle to the good ol'Twelfth Doctor angry eyebrows we all know and love, looking identical to how he looks in reality. And yeah, sorry person who was probably watching this weird display, because the Doctor's just giving them a wide smile. ]
Well! That was odd, wasn't it?
ain't afraid of no ghosts.
[ The Doctor is not a ghost mostly because that's boriiiiiing, also been there done that except for not really, it just involved some tech and the Fisher King and that's a story for another time. Instead, he's poking around the house, inspecting every angle, poking at things and shifting furniture and generally causing as much of a mess as possible to see how much he could change the environment before things shifted back to normal/somebody came in and said 'you stop that.'
Currently, he's rummaging through a storage closet trying to find anything remotely close to paint. And, since the menu offered him the option to be a ghost, he's assuming that there's a ghost in here...though what their goal is, the Doctor has no idea. ]
She does know that it's November, right? I expect the house to be a bit more festive! Someone program in some candy canes! Fairy lights for all!
[ dealing with things by being a deliberate nuisance: that's how the Doctor do. ]
rooftops
[ Yeah, having fun while the fun lasted has stopped being fun. Because again, Time Lords are weird. He had bothered Catherine to tweak in some of his more noticeable biology but there's no way to program in the knowledge of time that Gallifreyans have. The Doctor's more acute to time than most, whether it's telling if something's a fixed point or just how badly
There's no time here. This is VR, after all. So this entire simulation's felt like the Doctor's forgotten something, like he's been wandering around with a pair of earmuffs on the entire time. It's annoying, it's aggravating, and it's maddening. This isn't real. But it's real enough to drive him bonkers.
Needless to say, the Doctor's found his way to the rooftop and is lying on his back, looking up at the stars and...judging them. The thing about a VR would is that you don't have to program things exactly perfect. The thing about being a Time Lord who spends 75% of his time messing around in space is that you have a pretty good knowledge of the stars. Anyone who comes to bother him can find the Doctor just critiquing the sky. ]
That one's wrong. [ pause, frown. ] That one's wrong also. [ pause. ] Is that supposed to be Cassiopeia, she's not visible at this time of year to begin with.
ain't afraid of no ghosts.
She isn't scared to make herself know though, to speak up or give her opinion on the semi-odd phrasing to things he says. (Like who is the she he is referring to? She won't ask, but you know.)]
Yeah. It's November. Think it's still pretty early to decorate for the holidays. [Her hands rest on her hips, matter of factly.]

Motoko Kusanagi | OTA
[The Major's no stranger to virtual reality, which is why she signed on as security. The virtual world is impressive, but not as novel to her as to some. Her avatar largely resembles her normal body, with a few hints of the other personalities she's synchronized her consciousness with over the years: slightly messier hair courtesy of the Laughing Man and an even more stoic expression from Kuze, among other small changes.
She's at the orchard in more of a security capacity, but it's still hard not to want to sample one of the apples. She stoops down and picks up one a Granny Smith apple from the ground, turning it curiously in her hand. It's almost just like the one that Kuze had offered her, before his untimely demise. A frown crosses her face as she relives the unpleasant memory. She takes a small bite before dropping it back to the ground. Best to just focus on the task at hand.]
Rooftops
[The Major is more at home in the city than the country, so she can be found standing precariously on the ledge of one of the skyscrapers, the wind rushing through her purple hair. It's difficult to not want to just take a step forward and sail toward the ground or another rooftop, but she doesn't have her augmented body here so it likely wouldn't end well.
She sips from a bottle of expensive wine, the best the virtual world can conjure. If you happen upon her rooftop, she might be willing to share it with you.]
Sanderson Hawkins | OTA
Why NOT apple picking? It seems nice and innocuous. And he kind of needs nice and innocuous, given the fact that the whole world's literally been pulled out from under him. He's been adjusting, of course, but this feels just like the kind of late 2000s office trust building exercise that one of his teammates might have proposed that it works for him. Besides, it's fun and the smell of apples is actually pretty pleasant...
[Haunted Mansion]
In all seriousness, he came here out of curiosity. When he actually got there and he was presented with the choice, the choice seems obvious to him. Be a ghost? HELL YES. He's the one who has to see the ghosts way too often to try it the other way around. Besides, this way he can definitely go through walls and that makes him feel that much more comfortable.
[Isolated Rooftops]
Annnd of course he comes to this one. This one's his bread and butter, in a lot of ways. Of course, he prefers the alleys to the rooftops, but the urban setting still feels the most like home. Which, he knows, is a good thing and a bad thing. As with all of the others, he's definitely going to try and talk to people, network. It's a conscious effort, though. Otherwise, he knows he'll just retreat into a corner or start 'patrolling' for lack of a better word...
[Chat Program]
Sand: Hello.
Sand: Definitely Unique. Or are all of these this varied?
Apple Picking
She's climbing now, veeery high up, hunting down a perfect-looking bright red apple at the very top of a tree, when her foot slips and she loses a shoe. She actually loses a shoe. "Seriously?" She isn't talking to anyone, just asking the world in general, before shifting to start climbing back down. If she can't fly, she probably shouldn't jump out of a 20 foot tree either, right?

IT'S A DRAGON (ok no it's actually hawke), OTA
[ So, as it happens, someone has made a very particular request. That someone has also gotten it granted. That someone? Hawke, now A Dragon Formerly Known As Hawke, although feel free to still call her Hawke. She's gone from being little ol' human her to being a massive red dragon. Whether this is a good idea or not is not entirely unknown, as most may be inclined to think not.
Why?
Because she's kicking the draconic test drive off by crashing straight into the orchard, roaring, shoving innocent apple trees over! She won't be targeting anyone, but, oh, she may just be about to ruin your apple-picking fun. ]
ii. forest, the dragoning will continue
[ Though after her flying, crashing, and rampaging test drive in the orchard, Dragon Hawke has settled on lurking in the forested boundary between the orchard and the tropical oasis. If you're unlucky enough, she'll erupt out of the trees and underbrush to stand in your path. ]
Ha! And where do you think you're going? Trying to sneak through with a fight, are you?
[ That's right, she can still talk, and the voice is very obviously Hawke to those who know her, although right now she's playing forest guardian, guardian of the forest. All beware! ]

[ Fruit from another world... It may be virtual reality, and it may be one based on Earth, but Micchy is more than a little hesitant to actually eat anything growing from these trees whether it's all just a series of ones and zeros or not. He does pick one from a tree and holds it up to his nose to sniff it.
Smells like an apple. At least, he thinks it does. Something about the whole experience doesn't feel quite right, and the feeling is a little unsettling.
Still Micchy smiles like none of this is disturbing him as much as it is, and turns to look at whoever is nearby. ]
This is really incredible. I didn't realize there was a world out there with technology this advanced. It all feels so real.
B. Mansion
[ After passing on the option that felt too much like tossing himself to his death, Micchy is now in the foyer of a haunted looking mansion staring at the prompt, and debating what to do next. He can't be the only one to get this prompt coming up, though he can't be sure that anyone actually agreed with it.
He also can't be sure that anyone who might have said yes to being a ghost will actually appear and tell him about their "after death" experiences. Still he calls out to the open air-- ]
What happens if I say yes?
C. Rooftop
[ Micchy has managed to find an empty rooftop, and is looking down at the city below. He's already tried reaching an arm over the edge to realize that he's being kept safe by some invisible force, and now he's staring moodily down at the city below him, jaw clenched, hands curled into fists.
This reality feels different enough that he can tell his experiences are off, but too much feels so realistic that the entire thing is uncomfortable. What's worse is that the world he comes from isn't exactly low tech, and something like this is within the realm of possibilities in the near future. That thought makes his skin crawl.
This feels too much like being trapped. While he's not exactly looking to toss himself off the roof, it still bothers him that some force keeps him from doing it. Fences and walls around the top of buildings do the same thing, but feel more like obstacles rather than magical entrapments.
It's more than that though, the prompts might have been meant to be fun, but the suggestions of what to do, of trying to direct his actions, it gives whoever created this reality too much power. This is probably just meant to demonstrate all of someone's hard work, but Mitsuzane's mind is reeling as he considers what someone could do with this virtual reality if they didn't have the best intentions in mind. ]
no subject
[He was looking for some silence -- it's annoying, feeling so exposed and out of his element as this. Being in a new place is disorienting enough, but the non!reality of this virtual zone is just unsettling. He doesn't like it, but he likes less the idea that interacting with others could reveal more about himself than he'd like.
So he moves to the rooftops, only to find the first he lands on already occupied. How inconvenient. He considers leaving immediately, but... Well. He's still trying to suss out the idea of allies, so instead he just approaches with a confident laziness.]

[This equally unfriendly person is wandering the orchard, trying not to look too suspicious when he glances at other people. He's still not entirely convinced in trusting the place or people, but there's no point in making things difficult for himself, as far as he's concerned.
Bits of apple falling on him were not on the agenda, though. He looks up, a scowl appearing on his face.]
Oi. Watch it, would you?
ROOFTOP in the right post this time because i am trash
The changes weren't too drastic - he wasn't as muscular as, say, Norman, but it felt... interesting. Powerful. But for all the crazy adventures that were at his fingertips, for a while he just wanted some time to get used to his new body. He'd managed to get himself to the rooftop, and spent some time enjoying the view of the city below... while also trying out the sword that had come with his warrior class, slashing at the air at some pretend enemies.
