NEW CAPES ON THE BLOCK
WHO: ImPorts and a contingent of troubled youths
WHERE: Maurtia Falls and De Chima
WHEN: May 14-15
WHAT: Heroes and reformed (or "reformed") villains are invited to make a difference in the lives of teenagers who are walking a rocky path.
Welcome, imPorts! If you've been here a while, you've doubtlessly gotten used to getting a warm reception from most imPort-based events, filled to the brim with an adoring public hanging onto your every word, worshipping your every fashion choice, standing in awe of powers great and small. Celebrity's a heck of a thing!
But today, whether you're attending Day 1 in Maurtia Falls or Day 2 in De Chima, the audience is, shall we say... a little less receptive. ImPorts are brought in to see an audience of children predominantly from the ages of 13-17, and most - though not all - of them look decidedly unimpressed with having been dragged into a school gym to right their wrongful ways.
The children in De Chima are, largely, a little easier to handle; their brand of delinquency tends to come from an awful lot of boredom (and an awful lot of idle money, at that!); here, you will find teachers attempting to persuade their students out of truancy, theft, minor drug use, vandalism, and criminal mischief, among other crimes. These kids have a distinct worship of imPorts from the wrong side of the tracks; many possess their own names they've been tagging around town as has been directly inspired by imPort crimes, and some may even fess up to having designed their own masks to don. While they may be disrespectful, they're at least easier marks — both for those who wish to help them turn their lives around, and those supervillains who want a lackey or two.
The children in Maurtia Falls, however, are more likely to be involved in serious crimes involving gangs and drug trafficking; while gang activity in Maurtia Falls has certainly lessened as a direct result of imPort behaviour, it's still very much present, and affecting the local youth. These kids are far less likely to have as much idolization of imPort criminals (though it is still very much present), but they're also cannier and more incisive, more likely to be of use to whoever it is they work for. That's not to say that they're a lost cause in the least; they are simply in need of more opportunities than have been granted to them thus far! Still, they're a more dismissive lot, and talking directly to them is liable to earn you scorn and a scoffed, you gonna beat my ass like Archangel now?
So what is it that the imPorts are expected to do?
9 a.m.: Introductory Remarks
The school principal of each city has been provided with more or less the same speech: these children have been chosen because they have done wrong, but also because there is hope for them. And what better to symbolize hope than their brave imPorts, both those who have done great things, and those who serve as a lesson for what going down the wrong path can lead them? There's far, far too much babble about legality and justice, and while the principals visibly lose the audience within the first five minutes of their fifteen minute speech, they keep droning on and on. ImPorts are going to have to pick up the slack after this, if they're not busy whispering to each other during the speech.
9:15 a.m.: Rebels Without a Clue
Officials running the events will be very attentive as former villains take the podium to air their stories of bad choices and the consequences that followed. Anyone who tries to pull a bait-and-switch and promote any form of villainy will find their mic cut off immediately, but otherwise, they have free rein to discuss their dastardly ways. The audience is most attentive and engaged during the tales of villainous deeds, growing less so as the speeches segue into sanctimony, but each successive speaker will find it harder to grab their attention unless they have a really good story.
10:15 a.m.: The Benefits of Benevolence
The goody-two-shoes speeches will be a much harder sell as the audience is visibly disinterested from the start. There are even a few jeers for speakers who can't seem to get to the point (at least not one that interests the youths), although officials will quickly shut that down. Heroes with genuinely interesting stories to tell from their lives will get a better response than those who stick to platitudes and moralizing, and they may even reach a few of the less jaded kids.
11:15 a.m.: Mingle Session
Soda, water, and snacks (only healthy ones!) will be provided as heroes and audience members can get up close and personal. Event officials will be circulating to make sure nothing inappropriate happens, but for those secretly looking to be bad influences, there will be times when they're able to speak without being overheard.
Noon: Cafeteria Lunch:
All right, the food isn't great. Lunch ladies came in on their day off to provide the food, and standard-issue high school cafeteria fare isn't improved by their lack of enthusiasm. Hope everyone likes tater tots!
1 p.m.: Getting Dodgy
Outside on school grounds, two areas have been set up for special activities that encourage imPorts and teenagers alike to expend physical energy in productive ways. A new game of dodge ball kicks off every 15 minutes or so. Score is kept, but there are no prizes, only the satisfaction of teamwork. Nearby, an obstacle course has been set up using a lot of padded foam structures to climb over, crawl under and run around.
2:15 p.m.: Job Fair
Another talk session is structured specifically around employment opportunities for heroes and law-abiding regular citizens in both imPorts' homelands and here in America. Those who own their own businesses or hold positions of significant responsibilities can discuss hiring event attendees as interns or part-time junior employees, and can even hold impromptu interviews!
3:30 p.m.: Tough Love
Sometimes trying to provide inspiration isn't enough. The worst offenders in each city (with Maurtia Falls having a larger group) are hauled aside for a real "scared straight" session in which they'll learn in no uncertain terms what terrible things their future might hold if they continue on this path. It's more suitable for the hardcore reformed villains, but strangely, the tame heroes are expected to participate as well. Good luck scaring these kids straight, Goody Two Shoes.

Julian Day, De Chima & Open
[ Between getting some hours in for Community Service and wanting to at least appear cooperative, Calendar Man - sorry, reformed people don't go by villain names - Julian Day ended up being called upon to describe what he did and where it got him. He tells the story of St. Patrick's Day and how it was an "ill-thought out decision" caused by "misguided notions", as well as stories of crimes he did in previous universes and how all he got for it was incarceration and a downward spiral.
They made him rehearse it twice, and insisted he not go off script. While it irked him, he obliged. He just needed to put up with this sort of humiliation a little longer. Play along, until his next crime. His speech goes perfectly, except for a moment in the beginning when a singular kid cheered a bit too loudly when he came onstage. Most of the kids seemed pretty bored by it, however.
Julian leaves the speech annoyed, and that feeling lasts the rest of the day. ]
Mingling
[ Truthfully, Julian's more interested in the fellow imPorts there than the kids, though he does notice said Singular Fan hovering nearby watching him.
Maybe you see him and want to talk to him about his speech. Or maybe you overheard him muttering aloud: ] Perhaps I need my own Robin...
[ Completely on his way to reform, obviously. ]
Tough Love
[ This is where Julian's attempts at playing the game start to break down, after he gets distracted talking about how much money it takes to make new costumes and gadgets for every themed crime. Right when he starts mentioning it's why its necessary to continually up the stakes, in order to get more money to commit more crimes, the officials start to clear their throats.
If you're nearby, you might overhear him say, begrudgingly -] If you're in it for the money, it is not worth it.
because I want a bajillion threads with you, rebels
He came to this thing just to watch. Unknown to him, somebody's going to try and rope him in later to try and do a proper scared straight but nope, right now he's just here for moral support.
After the speech, the Doctor makes a beeline for Calendar Man, still grinning up a storm. ]
Well! That could have gone worse.
Re: because I want a bajillion threads with you, rebels
But not today, it seems. [ He smiles at him. ] Doctor. Having a good day?

Mingling
[ He nodded at Julian's little follower, from where he was, leaning against a wall. Mitchell is here, and he's giving his own speeches, but that's much later.
Besides, nobody really wants to hear about the antics of a failed superhero, now do they? He grimaced. ]
You gave a nice speech, little dry, though. I can't tell if your heart was in it, or not.
no subject
Julian looks back at Mitch, watching him impassively. ]
They made sure I didn't say anything... ambiguous. Rehearsed sincerity is difficult. As a politician, I`m sure you understand.
But rest assured, I'm contrite.

mabel | maurtia falls | open
[So maybe a few days ago the Pines kids were contacted by an old guidance counselor from Heropa Middle School. There’s an event they could really benefit from, she said! And at the time it had been so obvious that Mabel and her brother were supposed to talk to the other kids about being heroic and not taking random joyrides.
Apparently that’s not the goal here? At all. When she gives the people at the front her name Mabel gets ushered into the gym with the other kids and not on stage with the imPort speakers. Huh! Well, that’s… fair. Mabel has technically been truant for most of the year, and has seen more of the Heropa sheriff than any kid should have. At least she can make some new friends her age! Friends who are impressed by the number of scary tall criminals named Snakes Johnson she knows.
By the time the mingling’s happening Mabel’s deep in discussion with a couple boys her age, alternately telling them to quit being jerks to the older imPorts and taking notes on her arm with a magic marker. She’s getting some hot tips on ways to make her temporary prison tattoo business a success and there’s no way she’s going to forget them!]
More skulls… but what if the skulls had ribbons?
b. job fair
[Mabel’s not exactly looking for a job— she has the candy store, and her matchmaking business, and this prison tattoo thing which is gonna be so rad— but there’s no harm in wandering around and looking! And occasionally offering her artistic services.]
Hey, if you need any business cards— call Mabel.
mingle mingle mingle
(Is he surprised she's apparently in the audience of this program rather than on a podium? Not really. It only confirms his suspicions that she's on the path to brightly-colored and enthusiastic villainy.)
And, well, that's not really a line you walk past without saying anything, is it?] What would the ribbons be tied to?
no subject
Nooo, no, they wouldn't be tied to anything 'cause that's the opposite of what people in jail want! They want freedom! Freedom and skulls. So I was thinking it would just be nicely draped on stuff!Artistically.

Mabel, hello! Are you volunteering today?
[You're, like, ten, but she doesn't expect that to stop you. Betty's not really here in any sort of mentor capacity (her better half might have had plans - she isn't sure). It's all wrangling more than anything else. She'll be happy to recommend Mabel's talents while she's here, though.]

Kagerou | Maurita Falls
[For all the speeches, all the talking, Kagerou is keeping his distance. He doesn't speak. He has nothing to say, after all. How could he? To be honest, he didn't even want to be here -- people said there would be food. And since he'd been keeping his distance from anything resembling shelter or his job, free food is important.]
[If he's pressured to speak, he'll do everything in his power to refuse. Albeit quietly. He really doesn't want to attract attention to himself. Not here. Not like this.]
[He'll stay in his human form, though, hunched up in a chair, long, lanky legs drawn up to his chest, shoulders drawn forward so that he can all but hide. It's not very effective, however, since the quasi-glowing red and green eyes sort of make him stand out.]
[When he does perk up, it's probably more during the Rebels Without a Clue segment. If only because it's different.]
LUNCH
[Here it is. Here's the food. It's... like nothing he's ever seen before, so please excuse him if he seems completely bemused by all this.]
[What is all this? How is he -- is this even food?]
[If anyone is watching him, they can probably see the way his face falls, once it's clear everything is completely alien to him.]
CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE
[Anything else?]
The Iron Bull | De Chima
[Okay, to be honest, Bull's speech probably isn't what the officials are expecting. Sure, there's nothing in it to suggest he's promoting villainy or general shit-stirring. It's just Bull being Bull.]
[And... going to great lengths to explain that when you do Good Shit, you get Good Benefits. Like donuts. So many donuts. And other food. And fish.]
[According to the Iron Bull, the benefits of not being an asshole are, quite simply, getting free shit.]
1 p.m.: Getting Dodgy
[Oh yes.]
[This is great. This is the best idea yet. You can find the Iron Bull standing at one end of the dodgeball area, casually tossing a ball up and down in his hand. He's wearing that particular team's uniform, although on him, the clothing is stretched out to ridiculous limits.]
[Yeah it looks like he's wearing a crop top and short shorts.]
[Good luck, kids.]
Choose Your Own Adventure!
[Anything else you want to do with the Iron Bull at the event? Go ahead!]
The Shade | Maurtia Falls | Open
"My name is the Shade, and I am -- was -- a supervillain," is essentially how the story starts. Mind, the guy was just recently in the news for stealing a Goya, and he even got away. That didn't count though, right? The immortal didn't talk for long, but instead wants to talk one on one with anyone who's interested. So mostly, he spoke more about how it gets boring in jail, and how it gets boring once you've gotten what you wanted, and then left the podium before he could get kicked off.
Which is why for the rest of the time, the Shade is followed around by a young teenager, who actually looks interested. He's probably around fifteen, or sixteen, dressed in black and stripes, lots of metal and piercings and odd-colored hair. Shade barely seems to notice, although the boy is peppering him with questions nearly constantly, and Shade answers, because he likes telling stories.
Job Fair
By now, Shade has already lost his tail. Actually, the kid is looking for him, but the Shade went out for lunch, and is now walking around the fair with a glass of wine and the occasional snack.
He might have just forgotten that he had a guy interested in what he had to say. He does that. If anything, he might end up at the library booth, to chit chat with the staff there, or to talk with someone or another, but he's completely bored, and really just here because he felt he had to.
Tough Love
This was why Shade really came, since he'd been asked to, by the police, as a relatively straight citizen, after his imprisonment.
His hanger-on is back, along with a new crowed, wherein Shade shares the dangers of prison. He mostly complains loudly about how bad the food is, and how boring it gets. There's TV and weights, which, for someone like him -- an immortal -- is completely useless. He also complained about the clothing, to which some of them were a little more interested -- considering their...unique fashion.
Most of who Shade attracted was, unsurprisingly, the goth crowd.
tough love!
"He's right about the food," Dorian interjects, shooting a glare at whichever responsible adult strong-armed him into the chair right next to Shade. "It's horrendous."
no subject
Shade said, his tongue loose from all that wine and absinthe he'd had in the hours around lunch. Which was what responsible adults did, of course. "This is the gentleman who escaped prison the time we were caught, unfortunately." He looked over his shades at Dorian. "Appearance is everything, I'm afraid."
And being clean cut went far.

Tim Drake | both days, De Chima and Maurtia Falls
Both days, Tim gives a brief speech introducing himself and the Wayne Foundation. His speech is at least interesting in that it includes a description of Gotham, his work in Gotham, and that one time he was shot in the spine for publicly outing the names of some dirty cops in Gotham. (Kids like stories with shootings in them, right?) It is adjusted slightly depending on the day and the audience; De Chima gets a little more discussion coming from a place where he can empathize with idle money and boredom, and Maurtia Falls gets a little more discussion of ways to work towards a better situation without using crime. He announces to both audiences that the Wayne Foundation and Wayne Enterprises are offering a few scholarships and internships in addition to having trained guidance counselors at their booth willing to meet with anyone who wants help formulating better plans for their future.
Mingle Session
Tim does his best to play the usual part of Friendly Teenage CEO/Wayne Heir during the mingle sessions. Anyone who happens to approach him will get a smile and a hello, along with an obvious opportunity to bring up whatever topic they wanted to speak to him about.
Job Fair
The Wayne Foundation's booth does, as promised, contain information about the scholarships they offer to both non-imPort and imPort students, along with internships with WE and some part-time jobs for the older attendees, and there are several trained guidance counselors who will take anyone interested off to a slightly more private area to discuss future plans. Like with the Neon Knights Foundation, their focus here is on redirecting kids from crime and presenting doable alternatives, rather than shaming anyone or trying to scare them into following the laws.
Luckily for Tim, here he can leave a lot of the conversation to the counselors and just be there to answer questions, which is good because by the De Chima day, he's starting to burn out a little. He'll still greet anyone with a smile and keep up a conversation, but he disappears a couple times for a few minutes to recharge. Of course, he's on crutches, and it's definitely not a secret now why, so it wouldn't be unreasonable to assume he's just getting tired or in pain.

even if the slightly younger than her teens turned a few shades paler.) Okay, dude, your story about dirty cops was awesome in my book. I think stories with action and suspense like that are great. Just... be careful, I think the girl next to me was gonna hurl. Other than that, props to you. I would've just graffitied and egged their houses. (wendy this is why you are here.)

Job Fair - De Chima
Most of the job fair was directed at teenagers, though. Wasn't surprising, just wasn't what he really wanted to see. So he had to shift his focus back to the stuff for kids.
"These scholarships," he started, voice softer than he'd intended, betraying his nervousness, "What do the kids that get 'em need to do for 'em?"

Dorian Gray | maurtia falls | open!
[ The really sad thing is, Dorian's laundry list of being a terrible person is enough fodder for a three hour lecture instead of a ten minute speech. As it is, about ten different things get listed with a one sentence explanation as to why they're bad. Don't rob a bank, your friends might not bail you out. Don't do drugs, cocaine messes you up real good. Don't be a costumed supervillain, you'll get beaten up. Be nice to people or they just might commit suicide on you. And above all, don't murder your friends.
The speech is obviously something that was pre-approved and Dorian delivers it with the intonation of someone reading off a cue card. He knows he could jazz it up a little—he has stage presence if needed. But this is just beneath him.
It also doesn't help that he cuts off talking early to go whine to Toby's answering machine. Feel free to make fun of him doing super gross lovey-dovey talk over the phone in the hallway. ]
Getting Dodgy
[ Dorian is practically nocturnal. As such, he hasn't gotten a lick of sleep in over fourteen hours now. Someone's MAD TIRED. And yet, he's somehow gotten roped into dodgeball. He's in the middle of the dodgeball game when he can't help but pause and yawn, hit by an onset of tiredness.
So naturally, someone throws a dodgeball that hits him RIGHT IN THE FACE. Dorian's flustered as he turns around to look at the assorted students and imPorts. ]
Who threw that?!
Tough Love
[ Dorian has amassed a tiny little prep army. Ostensibly, he's here to tell people that no, really, it's absolutely rubbish when you a) go to jail and b) try to be a supervillain, jail has rubbish food and it's damn hard to keep a supervillain outfit free of burns and bloodstains. In practice, he keeps dovetailing the conversation to talk about clothes, complementing some of the more fashion-forward youth on their choices and gossiping about Oscar Wilde with others. You can definitely overhear him talking about fashion. ]
Nautical's always going to be big—and I know GQ said that they expected socks and sandals to be a hot trend but they seem to have forgotten that they're tacky as shi- [ Aaaaand he's getting a glare. ] Tacky as heck. Also, don't do drugs.
[ Nailed it? ]
Klarion Bleak | Maurtia Falls | Open!
[ Some poor idiot had thought that the kids would respond well to a young offender who was their own age. Unfortunately, they'd chosen Klarion, and whoever was in charge of bookings had forgotten to account for his attitude. His speech starts off decently enough, although he's obviously bored out of his wits. He mentions the Diner incident and the Great Pumpkin Spice Theft of 2015 in passing, and brushes over the Pan blackmailing like it's nothing ("Don't let yourself be blackmailed, it's highly inconvenient,"), but the overall impression that he gives is of someone who really only regrets getting caught, since it meant being without his powers and having to deal with a parole officer. It isn't long before his mic is cut off completely, and Klarion simply shrugs and teleports off to the snacks table. Exit stage left! ]
Mingling / lunchtime
[ Klarion isn't very good with crowds, especially not when combined with cafeteria food or the nosy kids that he seems to be attracting. Half of them are interested in him, and half of them seem to be interested in Teekl, and it's hard to tell who dislikes the attention more. ]
No, you can't touch him, he's a one-witchboy cat! If you value your fingers, leave him be!
lunchtime!
[ Of course Dorian is a massive hypocrite and naturally assumes Teekl won't bite him, as he attempts to give the cat a brief little head scratch. ]

Dipper Pines | Maurtia Falls | ota
[Apparently a guidance counselor at Heropa Middle School still believed the Pines twins could be saved and thus, Dipper and Mabel ended up among the audience in need of rehabilitation. Never mind that Mabel had assumed they would be the ones doing the rehabilitating.
Dipper sits through the lectures, not so discreetly reading a book to pass the time. He looks up when there's an imPort they recognise but otherwise this feels mostly like a waste of time. The snacks kind of make up for it, at least. Dipper shamelessly gobbles up more than his fair share of fruits and vegetables. You'd think this kid had never seen a vegetable in his life.]
b. Job Fair
[The whole employment fair thing feels kind of like a wash. Dipper's nowhere close to the age where he's thinking about getting a job, and he's a little skeptical about the internships and junior employee positions being offered.]
These are paid internships, right? Because if not, you're pretty much just criminals too.

wendy corduroy // maurtia falls
(wendy has absolutely zero idea why she's here. she attended school for probably a day or two, then decided hero work or whatever else she could do was a much better idea than sitting in a classroom again. except she got contacted about some seminar or whatever thing from a counselor who's little more than a vague memory at this point.
but the twins were going, so wendy figured she might as well tag along to see what this biz is about, only to find out she would not, in fact, be presenting, but rather listening on "how to be a better hero". clearly someone ratted her out with all that graffiti and pranking. no one ever gets hurt. usually. it's mostly her.
about halfway through one of the speeches, wendy has given up staring at that spot on the wall, and playing tic-tac-toe with herself on random pieces of paper. so at some point, she falls asleep, head leaning back with soft snoring. but the occasional snort might ring through the hall, too.
(getting dodgy)
(now this is shit wendy came here for. she's normally pretty chill, but competitive games are always something great to get hyped up about. chances are, she's doing a pretty good job helping her team dominate, due to her maneuverability and quick throws. she's proud of herself at every victory, and not bummed out at any of the defeats. sure would be better if there were prizes, though. oh well, she'll think of something later.
though one does have to worry about a certain thing that even wendy forgets about, that being her super strength. so you might be that poor, unfortunate soul who was unlucky enough to get hit or almost hit by a dodgeball wendy threw possibly... no, definitely threw too hard. she winces when it lands or passes by, calling out to check on them.) Dude, that's my bad! You okay?
Yuichiro Hyakuya l Owari no Seraph l De Chima
[This. Was not going to be easy. But regardless, all Yuu can think of as he looks at these kids, most probably around his own age, he has to try? Guren had helped him. And he and Mika had done their best to help the other orphans back home. So that's why he has to try help them. To set them right the same way Guren and Shinoa, the same way Mika did for him. At the same time it is obvious he is really not used to the whole public speaking thing. But he manages, pretty much talking about how he himself made mistakes and tried to push people away, how he's lost people close to him. That these kids should strive to keep going and do their best because in time, they will find someone or something worth it. Worth living for, worth doing their best for.
Yeah, he kind of got this from a particular speech Guren gave him in the aftermath of that particular night, losing his 'family'. But it still applies here, he figures.]
Dodge Ball:
[Yuu is only too happy to get right into the thick of things. The idea of the game is simple enough. Probably, using Ashuramaru to get faster or stronger would be cheating. But he's still a force to be reckoned with, giving as good as he takes as he joins in with the other teenagers.
Everyone may want to run, when one ball smacks him in the back of the head. Because that same ball is then flying right at the person he guesses is responsible. Whether he is right or just about to give some innocent bystander a ball to the face.....]
