[ Miles is in the largest, most comfortable chair in the board game room / study when she arrives, having decided to polish off his adventures with a bit of tactics planning ... and falling firmly into a nap instead. Mutants and mild arrests and all ... Even Miles tires eventually. The moment she speaks, though, he jerks awake guiltily. He must really be tired if he's just having spontaneous naps like this.

He rubs at his face gently and turns towards her. ]

-- We do? Is everything all right?

[ A faint, instinctive spike of dread. Even now he fears that she'll up and decide to leave the Vorkosigans for good. Not because he doubts her loyalty, but rather his ability to inspire it. ]

[ She catches the spike of dread and frowns down at him. What the hell was that about? She hadn't realized she'd gotten to the point of inspiring fear in the Vorkosigans, too.

She opts to remain standing, taking up leaning against one of the many surfaces that contain board game pieces. Carefully, of course. She doesn't need him shrieking over falling parts. ]

For the most part, yeah. But I had trouble with that kid you said you want to recruit. The young boy. [ Winry's still in the clear. ]

[ Oh. Phew. Miles relaxes instantly, with the accompanying wave of relief washing over the link. Not quitting. Or leaving him. So far, anyway. ]

Ed? What about him?

[ She sighs. ]

Did you not hear the little asshole arguing with me while on the op?

[ Oh, that. He should have expected that ... he settles back into the chair with a soft sigh. ]

I can't very well call him little. He's taller than me.

That's not the damn point and you know it.

Right, well ...

[ Another sigh. ]

I heard the tenor of the conversation but not the content.

The kid decided I must be some maniac with a gun. From the get-go he didn't trust me and kept getting between me and my loaded weapon, and the damn things that were down there with us.

[ She narrows her eyes at the memory. ] He then got pissed when I had to shoot a few charging at him and demanded I stay away from him and his friend.

[ Miles winces instantly. It's true that the creatures had been unsettlingly human - and that Ed has some kind of history with them - but getting in the line of fire ... Not to mention the fact that they'd been capable of mauling, surely. ]

That ... ah. I think he has reason for that. Not the getting in the line of fire, but rather the sympathy.

And? You're recruiting him to do research and development for a security organization. What the hell is he going to be looking into that is nonviolent?

[ She lets out a light snort. ] It's clear he has problems with that.

Yes, I can see that. We aren't all violence either, you know.

Bodyguard and security work often involves it.

Oh, yes. Most certainly. But it's not all we are either. We're no mercenary army.

Then what are you having them research exactly? Because if he's going to force himself along on dangerous ops as part of being here, it's not going to end well.

[ For Ed, if she has her way. ]

I haven't any specific tech in mind. Good people first - the rest follows after.

... but he can't get in the way of your weapons again, no.

[ She rolls her eyes at that. Of course Miles is recruiting without a solid plan in mind. ]

Or decide anyone carrying one is some psycho with no trigger discipline.
