Usually they go grander or... even perhaps, more accurate, than mayor, yes.

Well... there's not a whole lot to rule. Mostly just needs to be organized, you know?

Still. Leader or prime minister suits the head of a state, however small it is.

True. Well, I kind of like not having to worry about appeasing a king or something.

I thought so. The only king I know is a really good guy, though, so I guess I don't have experience with that either way.

Oh, yes, I've only known... decent men to be king myself. [ One was so decent he was forced to force an abdication, but that doesn't take away from how decent he was. Just misguided. In Francis' opinion. ]

Really? A lot of places, I think, have... less than satisfactory royalty. [Not that he really knows much about that.]

Really. And yes, we've had a few down through the years. I suppose it helps when our monarchy doesn't have a lot of power.

Oh, well, I guess not. That'd make more sense. So they're just a figurehead?

No, a constitutional monarch. They have some powers, but it's overridden by the parliament.

What's... the point in having them, then?

Tradition. A... moral standard. A symbol of stability. That sort of thing.

So it's a holdover?

I suppose... we are proud of the institution.

Well... I mean, there's nothing wrong with it. It just seems weird to have two forms of government side by side.

Most government have levels. Here the president is more or less serving the same function as a monarch. They just have to elect them rather have them born to the role.

True. Just... it feels like 'king' and 'president' are on the same level in the hierarchy.

That would be fairly accurate, in my experience.

Is the way they run it in this world the same as you're used to?

As far as I can gather, yes.

Huh... is that weird, though? Maybe not, I mean -- this is a world really similar to yours, after all. Just hard for me to wrap my brain around.
