WHO: Teenaged Emmett Brown and you!
WHERE: Various places, largely centered around De Chima
WHEN: All along the week of the Pull Point plot!
WHAT: Small science investigations. Temporal fish out of water problems.
WARNINGS: None so far, will update if needed!
a. the time-shift
[It happens in an instant. Doc Brown is out on one of his usual walks, there's a shudder throughout reality, and among the many changes, the old man is replaced by a freckled teenager in a sorry state. The suit he's wearing is entirely ruined---moldy, stained, and ripped in a few embarrassing places. Oddly enough, his hair remains perfectly flat and neatfor once in his life.
It takes a few minutes for the ache of disorientation to fade, and when it does, he slowly sits up. This most certainly isn't Hill Valley's town square. No---something hit him, like lightning, flashing in his mind a series of dreams about a place like this. A faint image of the man of science he might someday be.
But in the here and now, he makes a futile attempt at dusting himself off and makes his way to the nearest news stand. Two important observations: he's in a place called De Chima and the year is 2016.]
2016?! But that's eighty-five years---no wonder fashion's gone so downhill. And the vehicles, they...levitate, like the personal transport device?
[He approaches a random car on the street in a bit of a daze. When he's overwhelmed, a study of a somewhat familiar object is one thing to latch onto---but naturally the owner of said car gives him a look of disgust and drives off.]
Right, sorry about the intrusion. Moving on.
[He folds his hands behind his back and turns to walk somewhere, anywhere, with as much dignity as he can muster given his current sorry state.]
b. the telegraph
[Later, Emmett's managed a much-needed shower, changed into clean if stuffy clothing, and received a briefing on the situation. That faint memory? That was his future self, the one who will live and work here someday. Others are working on fixing this future, and while he would love to contribute, Emmett knows his slowly-building skills aren't quite up to the par of working with time machines.
Oddly, that thought makes his stomach flip. But for now he has a simpler mission: adapt to the 21st century for the time being. First order of business: the strange device that he'd found on the ground beside him. It belonged to his older self, and apparently it was a dramatically enhanced wireless telephone, digital library, film recorder, and radio? He marveled at it.
And this must be the inter-net search engine---ah! No, I suppose it's not. Attempt number fourteen failed.
[Whatever he did with his device, he seemed to keep accidentally hitting the flash. If there's obnoxious lighting getting in the way of your evening stroll, Emmett's probably the cause. Should anyone look at him, he greets them with a sheepish wave.]
c. struck like lightning
[As if the other bout of flashing wasn't bad enough, Emmett eventually runs into another problem. He's borrowed a few books about technological developments of the 20th century, and upon reading about the first hover cars, he snaps his fingers.]
Great Scott, that's it! Magnets, powered by sufficient electrical output---it's so simple, why didn't I think of it?
[As he slaps his forehead, he accidentally triggers an electrical discharge, causing his hair to fly in every direction. It only hurts a little, but he still forcefully yanks that hand away from his face with his other, staring at it in disbelief. Did he just...electrocute himself somehow?
Upon the first shock, he'll be terrified. But if anyone happens by a little later, they'll surely find him out on the grass trying to make as big of a lightning-ball as possible. He really likes pushing things to the limit.]
d. wildcard option
[Of course, it's also possible to catch him just about anywhere! He tends to walk at a brisk pace, his eyes always focused straight ahead, but he'll stop to investigate any and all curiosities at 'home' and around town.]

He approaches Emmett with a smile and gestures towards the device he's holding, unaware that he's still a platypus and that might upset him a little.]

[Excellent observation skills there, Emmett. He crouches in front of the creature, who is standing upright. And wearing a hat. That's weird.]
And you want this marvel of modern technology?
[Eh, what the hell. He'll hand the phone off to the platypus. Not as though he's having any better luck with it.]
no subject
He shakes his head when Emmett hands over his phone, pushing it back towards him and he gives him a questioning look. Hoping that he understands that he's trying to say "Hey, you need help with this thing?"]
no subject
All of this is entirely beyond me. I'm sure you have a better grasp than I do.
[Yeah, that's it. Emmett rubs at his temple, unsure how his life became this incomprehensible mess.]
no subject
no subject
I can't say I've ever met anyone quite like you...but I've never seen such a loud and frantic place either.
[Honestly, the noise and indescribable feeling of solitude bother him more than a platypus ever could. Maybe he's watched too much Frankenstein.]
no subject
Perry looks at Emmett expectantly, waiting for him to point out any immediate issues that he has.]
no subject
Right, as I take it one of these tiny lenses on the back is a camera, and---ah!
[In lifting the phone to study the lens, he managed to shine the flash right in his eye. He lifts a fist to rub at it, then shakes his head and continues.]
I'm assuming this is a replacement for a telegraph and telephone all in one? I hit 'call', and...
[He does. He's staring blankly into a broadcast to the whole imPort world.]
no subject
That broadcasts to everyone who has that device. Should only use it when you have something to tell everyone
no subject
And---not that I have social calls to make, but if I were to talk to a single person? In case there's some kind of emergency. Which seems likely.
[It's hard for him to relax in a place like this. He's radiating tension, wondering where the next upending will come from.]
no subject
Deciding that it would be easier to just show him he reaches over to go to the "private chat to one person" option. After he does that he looks at Emmett to see if he has it.]
no subject
I believe I understand! And that was...
[He touches a small icon that turns out to be a weird perspective of his eye.]
The camera. Of course.
Do you have a name, oh master of the portable telegraph?
no subject
He takes two seconds to write his next note.]
Perry

[Emmett holds out his hand...is this about right?]
I'm Emmett. Pleasure to make your acquaintance.
no subject
If you need any more help with this thing, feel free to ask me.

It's a lot to take in, I know. You might wanna be a bit more careful though, they levitate some but that doesn't mean they won't hurt just as bad if they hit you.
Re: a
So I see. All vehicular speeds seem to have surpassed my home era in leaps and bounds. In a way, it's as if absolutely everything is faster.
no subject
What's your home era?
no subject
[He's looking dubiously at the high buildings and passing cars.]
Progress marches on, and with it comes changes in all of us. This web of highly accessible broadcasts, instant communication, blaring lights! It's brand new.
B
Emmett, are you busy? And if so, can it wait? I need your opinion on something, it's urgent.
no subject
[Who is this guy? He pre-existed in the contact list Perry had painstakingly taught him about, so clearly he was someone he'd know in the future, but. Questions to be answered later, he supposed. It wasn't often he was asked for an opinion.]

I'm sorry to disappoint you, but from what I've managed to learn about the situation, I believe I've been affected by the temporal displacement as well.

[It occurs to him suddenly he had no idea how old Emmett was until just now. If the story about being from 2015 was true, that would have made him... 101? Ahaha no that can't be right. But the movies came out in the 80s, which would put him closer to 70, which is a little more believable... even so, he would have guessed 50-ish.
(This pointless line of thought is brought to you by the letter F, for Future)]
Well, how much do you know about time travel, at the moment? [He could have got his start young - Qubit certainly did.]

no subject
All right. That doesn't mean you can't help, still. I'm going to need multiple subjects in order to source the disturbance with any kind of accuracy.
no subject
[Just what was his older counterpart like, anyway? Something inside Emmett screamed that he should know, but apparently not.]
