WHAT: ImPorts attend The Perestroika Seminar to receive mandatory training and brainwashing. Need a quick recap? ImPorts will be able to distract themselves with their mental link on the network during brainwashing videos, and imPorts who possess a strong will will be able to resist being successfully brainwashed. A fox is supposed to make a good companion for a witch, at least in my country. They're very clever--but also tricky as well.

Or so I've heard. I've never met a Japanese witch, to my knowledge.

And which country is that, again? ...This Japania place?

[monster_san]

Japan is in the Pacific Ocean, off of the continent of Asia. [Just a light correction there; it's an easy mistake for someone new to Earth entirely.] It's a wonderful place--though, of course, I am slightly biased.

Oh, Japan, all right. I'll have to add geography to the list of things I need to read up on in this world.

Is it much different from here? - Not here here, obviously.

Very different, although I hope you don't have a need to learn about it--that would probably mean some terrible incident was happening there. But our language is different--local customs, the length of the school year, what side of the road we drive on... it goes on and on.

Oh? You know both Japanese and er, English, then? [which is what he's come to understand this language is called in this world, although on his own it's Morporkian.]
Would you mind if I asked you to say something in it?

[monster_san]

[She nods--although most of her English knowledge is heavily propped up by the automatic translation, she is making an effort to learn it properly.]

All right... [Of course, when prompted like that to say something, you automatically have a mental block. She cups her cheek in one hand.]

Kannan-ni atte hajimete shinyū-wo shiru.

[Friends are first known in hardships--a saying that has been highly relevant in her life.]

[Rincewind grins suddenly, pleasantly surprised to understand that.]

I thought so, I thought so! That's an Agatean dialect in my world! This has happened before with some other languages I know, it's so strange. It's been a while since I've spoken it, but, er...

[and he attempts, haltingly:]

This is all a plateful of eggs. No, I mean - This is all very strange. Am I saying it right?

[Fuu covers her smile with her hand at his first attempt--the misspeaking is cute, but she doesn't want to mock him. It's not like her English skills are excellent without translation.]

You said it right! And knowing how to order food is important, too. [She taps her chin with one finger.] You know, something similar happened when I visited another world--we met someone who sounded uncannily like she was from the city of Osaka. And you said it happened with other languages too?

Yes. With Russian, even. What I speak back home is known as English here too, which is the most obvious parallel. I'd like to get a proper look at some other language books when this is all over.

[...if this is ever all over.]

Good to know I'm not the only one it's happened to, though.

That's a good idea. It sounds like there might be a 'parallel' version of every language. [With Earth and Cephiro, Fuu knows the reason--but she's not sure that the Creator she met has created every single parallel universe.

...The thought of multiple Creators makes her head hurt.] Is your homeworld much like Earth? Do you live in a place that looks like England or America?

I wonder what the equivalent to Black Oroogu would be.

Oh no. No, mine's rather different. It's got none of this [he waves a hand] technology and such. The cars and things. I mean tress, grasses, animals, yes, all those, but everything else is different.
