WHAT: A big imPort charity fair!

There's an imPort charity fair going on down at a park by the beach in fair Heropa, today! You've probably seen it advertised for a couple of weeks, now. In the newspaper, on the network, flyers on street posts-- so on and so forth. All proceeds go towards the safety net fund for unsettled imPorts! Their aim as stated is to ensure all imPorts who come here-- especially children-- don't feel pressured in to registering just because they're worried they won't be able to get a job or have anywhere to live otherwise. They've been around for a while. Perhaps you've received help from them already, or heard of them in passing.

Perhaps you're just lured by the promise of food and drink.

Or perhaps you'd like to try to try your hand at some of the amateur game stalls set up?

Maybe you were just walking past and came to see what all the commotion was about.

Or maybe you're genuinely interested in the charity and wished to put a donation straight in the box, or wanted to suss out the man in charge. (Mandrake's around, talking to potential donors.)

Maybe you've come because you're interested in the advertisement of the charity's free resume building help and networking services for imPorts.

Or perhaps, like any seasoned imPort, you just don't trust large gatherings of imPorts in one place to not go wrong, and you're here on guard in case the worst should happen.

Whatever the case, the weather is fine and the fair seems to be bustling. Plenty of imPort-sympathetic locals are here as well, mingling and generally having a good time. What are you doing in the crowd?

[He just hands it over wordlessly -- he had a snack before coming here, so he'll get something more substantial later.]

I guess so, huh? I never really thought about it. Never had the opportunity to have a choice in the matter.

[ Yum. Hiro wastes no time in starting to devour them. ]

Huh? What do you mean?

I mean, I've never had to choose between a real animal and a robot. Nobody I know is that into robotics.

Is it just not a thing where you come from?

Yeah. I mean, I'm sure the potential is there, but it'd be a really niche interest. Sounds to me like robotics are more wide-spread where you come from.

Oh. Huh. I've been surrounded by it all my life so I guess I didn't think about it.

I bet. Probably where you're from, it's a little more high-tech than where I'm from. I mean, at home, we don't have hover cars. Though really the islands are more of a boating community anyway.

Hey, we don't have hovercars either. But we do have botfights. ... What kind of boats?

Just regular ones. Fishing boats. Everybody has a rowboat, too. There's one big "town" island, and then there are littler islands around that one. People live on the smaller ones, or work there, or whatever. So we need boats to get around.

Huh. That sounds kinda fun actually.

Yeah, it's kinda cool. When I was a kid, I hated it. Took me a couple years to figure out how to appreciate it.

How come? Too slow?

No, I hated the whole place. You can't go anywhere. Past the islands, there's just water.

Oh come on, there has to have been a city or something out there.

Nope.

[He smiles, though feeling it on his mouth is weird -- why can he look back on this and feel all right about it? But maybe it's just Hiro's disbelief.]

Not a thing. Just endless ocean. Factories and workshops on the islands supply what we need, and there are farms and stuff, so we don't need any outside help. As far as I know, ocean is all there is.

That's kind of crazy. How did life even start up on a world like that? Are you alien colonists? Or merpeople?

Hah. No, nothing like that. At home, everything is broken up into separate worlds. My world is Destiny Islands. There are walls between the worlds, so they're all separated. But they started to break down, so we were able to leave to other worlds. According to a story I've heard, a long time ago, they were all one world. It might have been something like this world is now.

And when you say world, you're not talking about a planet.

Nope. In the case of where I'm from I guess you'd say they're different dimensions or something, but you can travel through space to get to them. They're like islands themselves. The space between the worlds themselves, I guess, would be considered the universe.

But they're close enough that you can actually get to them? What does your night sky even look like?

It looks like the one here does. It's just, the stars are other worlds, and they're actually reachable.

That's what I mean! How does life even work that way ... The gravity forces alone would be insane!

I don't know. Heh, that's not my strong suit. But maybe if someone from my world who's sciency shows up, I'll send them your way.
