Heropa

[ New world, new place? Just another day for Dani. She wished stuff like this would stop happening to her already, but she knew it didn't work that way. She had not been here for very long, but after getting what info she could from whoever the hell was in charge of this place and then being shoved off on her own afterwards, she decided explore around a bit, hoping to find some of her own kind here or maybe other friends she made a long the way. Either way she was looking for her people and others who could help her out.

She most likely would be wandering the streets and park asking people if they could tell her more about the city. She wanted answers. Or she could also be found sitting down somewhere playing with her handy dandy knife because she was just that bored. ~~Or just knock her down or something idc.~~ ]

Maurtia Falls

[ During the day time, Maurtia Falls seemed like a nice quiet, quaint city, but at night time that proved to be rather incorrect. Crime-wise it reminded Dani of just about any other large bustling city (not as bad as New York, but still somewhat up there) and now she regretted taking a walk around outside in the dark. Not because she was worried and she couldn't take care of herself -- quite the opposite, actually -- but because the people out and about at this hour were annoying and really starting to grate on her nerves the more she got pestered. The card sharks and dealers were relentless and Dani was half-tempted to just shove them to the ground, but she was an X-Man, she wouldn't do that. Not yet, anyway.

She could only sigh and pinch the bridge of her nose. Ugh. ]

Oh for the love of... I already said no. [ More bugging here. ] Yes I think it would be better if you moved along somewhere else. In that direction.

[ Why were these people like this? ]

[Today has been a busy day. And the best way to unwind after one of those tended to be time with people he cared about. Which normally meant that he stayed home and the people came to him. But tonight was special because he needed to get the hell away from home, given he was a bit stressed over certain new arrivals. So instead David was walking from the local porter, a canvas bag over one shoulder stuffed with ingredients for a complex meal he was going to throw together for Damian once he got to the other man's house. Not his preferred cooking location, but no way he was going to run into Scott.

He is more than used to ignoring the people on the street, and just walks past them with no problems, humming to himself under his breath until...

Until a program he left running on his glasses picked up on a familiar voice. Something from back home. And David froze. Unbelieving.]

Dani?

[ Ignoring them sounds like the better option and Dani is starting to heed that advice. She can tune them out like they're white noise... except for the fact that the only voice she doesn't tune out is a very familiar one that she hears from behind her. One that she hasn't heard in what seems like forever, but one she knows very well, nonetheless. And turning her head to finally face him, Dani looks almost shocked. ]

David? Oh my god it's really you. I was starting to think I was the only one here.

[The only thing that keeps him from dropping the bag of ingredients is that there are glass bottles and produce that would bruise. So he puts the bag down before opening his arms. Yes, he's going to hug his advisor. He's always got a hug for Dani. Especially now that he's older and more mature.]

It's me, Dani. And we're not alone here. Tell me when you arrived. Are you new? Do you live here in the Falls? What did you get power wise? Oh, Dani, you have to come have dinner with us. I'll make something great for us all."

[ She's not prepared for the hug, but she's absolutely not going to turn it down. ]

There are others? [ She pauses, to answer the rest of his questions. ] And I just got here so I guess you could say I'm new... and you could also say Maurita Falls is where I'm living now. The housing isn't too far from here.

I have my original powers, but I got those back before arriving. I take you've been here longer?

[The hug matters to him. Dani was... well, his feelings about Dani was so complicated, and he was just going to settle back on the surrogate mom ones. Going to ignore the other ones.]

There are others. The New Mutants, mine. Some of them. It's... going to be jarring, Dani. Laurie is here. Alive.

[As for her presence in the Falls, he might have to visit more for that.]

I've been here a few months.

Laurie...? It's been so long... How is she?

[ It's been so long since she's seen her -- since she's seen any of her students, really. But especially Laurie. And David mentioning being here for a few months piques another question out of her. ]

David, I saw Josh earlier. Is... is he doing alright?

[ She figures David already knows what she is referring to. ]

Successful. A writer. A woman you'd be happy to know.

[His smile says he's happy for her, so happy. But he doesn't want to give up everything. That's Laurie's responsibility. But he definitely wanted to make that knowledge easier on her, like someone had on him.]

Josh? He's fine. Well, fine enough. He's a doctor. We've got a house, he bought it. It's going pretty nice.

[No, Dani, he doesn't know.]

[ Aw. That gets her to smile right back at him. Her kids are growing up so fast. ]

That's very nice to hear. She always was a good writer.

[ One of the best in the class. At the school.

And now her expression goes more neutral here. That's not what she meant, so she guesses she has to be more blunt. She puts both of her hands in her pockets. ]

That's all well and good, but I'm not talking about that... He doesn't remember me, David. He was genuinely confused when he saw me.

[He doesn't...? David pauses. Yes, there was one interaction where something like that had happened, hadn't there been? After...]

Mother-fucking... There was a thing that happened, in November. Lachesis, Clotho, and Atropos, the three Fates, played a game with us. This evil group, OTO, tried to summon one of them to control her, but it would have destroyed the world. So the other two were summoned to try and reign her in. One showed us our memories or potential futures. I saw...

[Dani, dying in the oval office. Josh had saved her. For once he'd been torn from that damn nightmare.]

Well, there was this thing where one of them would show you images of people at risk of dying thanks to the fight going on. Innocent people. And you had to give her something of value to save them. A test of what you'd sacrifice. I gave up my ability to figure skate.

[And he had no greater joy than that.]

And two other things. Memories, I think. They had to be important, powerful to save those people. I... He must have given up you, Dani. The only adult that ever cared about him for him, rather than as a healing battery.

[ Dani listens to David and what he has to say. It's... It's a lot to take in, but in the end it all starts to click and all starts to make sense -- well, make sense for a mutant superhero, anyway. It would've been too much for any other person, probably.

She's quiet for a while after he finishes up, but she soon speaks up again. ]

That doesn't surprise me. He always put other people before himself. [ And she's glad of that and proud of him at the same time. But that still doesn't stop her from being sad about it. She frowns ever so slightly. ] But I have to ask, do think this'll last?

I... don't know. Maybe. I think... I forgot someone too.

[And he hates it because he doesn't know who. At least he can TELL Josh stories about Dani.]

You were the best adult to him.

I'll just have to wait and see what happens.

[ She makes it obvious that she doesn't like saying that. At all. ]

He was like a son to me. He still is.

[And that Josh lost that fact, lost that there was an X-Man who loved him, an adult who cared about him, was the absolute worst.]

I wish I had known, Dani. I would have started teaching him about you again.

It's okay, David. It's not your fault. [ She pauses, and rubs at her chin. She always knew he kind of had bad-blood with some other older mutants. ] I should say he already knows I'm his teacher, but... I haven't told him anything else. Not yet, anyway.

I can... bring it up if you want?

[Maybe he can find a way to make it work again? He knows telepaths. Maybe he can get someone to recover those memories.]

Maybe. I don't want to make him feel guilty or anything. He has enough going on.

[ That's her main worry and the main reason she hasn't brought it up herself yet. But she also doesn't want this to last forever, so she pauses and contemplates, tapping her chin. ]

But you're right. We're going to have to bring it up eventually. It might go over better if it came from you.

[Guilty? Somehow David doesn't seen that happening. But he's going to work on it.]

I'll handle that then. Because Dani? He... he loves you in a way he doesn't love the family he had.

[He got to see that first hand. Got to see Josh so desperate to protect the only good parent figure in his life that he nearly drained himself dry just to protect an illusion of her from David.]

That I do know. His own parents basically disowned him.

[ Unless he was referring to the other adult X-Men. But either way, she frowns when she says that and shakes her head. ]

I'll leave it to you. Thanks, David.

And you, Dani. I'll... try and keep you updated. Seems like the situation is very complicated. And do me a favor... when you see Laurie? Hug her. She deserves all the affection after what she's had to learn about herself back home. But she's still going strong.

That'll be appreciated. Thanks again. And it is... [ Very complicated, that is. ] but you don't have to worry about the rest, I'm gonna give Laurie a hug regardless.
