MAURTIA FALLS #001 [ closed to occupants or vistors ]

As the Solstice approaches, Zelda is getting into the holiday spirit. Granted, what that spirit looks like is relative. While she's done nothing to encroach on any decor or celebration the other inhabitants of the house may partake in, she has her own way of doing things, too. This is why it won't be unusual to find a few festive inverted pentagrams here and there and Zelda spending her evenings relaxed on the couch, a burning cigarette in hand, drinking a glass of gin and paging through a haunted holiday classic.

Come the night before the Solistice, she places a Yule log into the fireplace and lights it, keeping a close eye on it as the flames lick around it. She's eager to inform everyone of its importance; "The lit Yule log protects this house, and bars all manner of evil and mischevious spirits. It is of the utmost importance that it stays lit through the Solistice when the veil is at its thinnest -- especially with all the strange occurrences as of late."

HEROPA

Zelda isn't blind to what's been going on around the country the last couple of weeks, but since it hadn't seemed to directly affect her she hadn't seemed to particularly care. This means business as usual - although, for today, that business is in the sunny city of Heropa, Zelda's least favorite place. She pursuing an outdoor shopping mall, wearing a large-brimmed, black hat (it's no wonder why those once had been so fashionable among witches) and dark sunglasses, examing the stalls and shops for the things she needs. While it might be unbelievable, she's Christmas shopping. Although she would never admit it, Sabrina is enamored with the ridiculous holiday and a gift would make her happy. And if Zelda gets Sabrina a gift, it's rude to not get everyone a gift, right?

And maybe even a few little things for herself. The sales are good this time of year, after all.

She's in a good enough mood up until she encounters a man dressed up as Santa--complete with a beard and mistletoe patterned board shorts in honor of the sunny weather--who has probably nipped at the eggnog a bit too much. He starts to follow her around which is at first a novelty and then becomes incredibly annoying, to the point where she finally speeds into the nearest store, turning around to wave her hand at the door before she can be further followed.

"Vobis non transeat." Although unassuming shoppers won't have an issue coming in and out, drunk board-short Santa will find himself left out in the cold - so to speak. Zelda takes a minute to get her bearings, finally looking around in the store which has turned out to be a very obnoxious Christmas decoration store. Every surface is covered with baubles and grinning snowmen and colorful nativities, and Zelda's likely to be there for a long, long while yet.

She lets out an ever-suffering sigh. "Well, this certainly limits my options."

Tina doesn't bat an eye at Tom, having gotten used to the many strange shapes animals could come in with the various Pokemon that have come and gone; she sits up, stretches, and once she's fully awake, offers her hand for Tom to sniff instead. Magnus' dogs don't seem unduly bothered, either. Uncle Jesse gives an offended boof at Tina changing positions and, once she's turned to face Zelda and sat cross-legged, Jesse rests his snout on one ankle and closes his eyes again. Alf the chihuahua doesn't even stir, content to keep warming herself.

"I've never heard of that happening, but that doesn't mean it's not true," Tina replies thoughtfully. "And after what just happened, I'll take all the protection we can get. Is there anything I can do to help?"

"Oh. Uh... okay." Tina half feels like she should apologize for being useless, then wonders why- it's not like it's her fault she was made this way. She instead opts to scratch Uncle Jesse's ears. "So, uh, how evil are we talking here...?" she asks nervously. "I can't do much to defend myself. Not that... I don't trust you and Sabrina. I just don't know much about this kind of thing."

That first bit does nothing but get a prolonged groaning noise coming from Tina's mouth. Uncle Jesse nuzzles her leg, whining with concern.

"So, uh, how likely are demons to show up? ... hopefully not at all," she amends. "I trust Sabrina to protect us... and since the two of you are related, I trust you, too."

I hope I'm right, Tina adds silently, as she and Zelda are still getting to know each other.

Tina puts her arms around Jesse, leaning down to bury her face in the Bernese's fur.

"I think it is," she replies, a few moments later when she raises her head again. "I think if you intended to hurt any of us, it seems like you could have done so. But you haven't. So that's good for me. Why is it that you don't like mortals, though...?" She then hastily adds, "Uhm, if you wanna share. It's not any of my business, now that I think about it."

Tina visibly cringes at that and is about to apologize for her lack of manners, but she listens on as Zelda continues speaking, and she's quiet for a moment afterward as she digests all of that.

"That doesn't seem fair," Tina finally says quietly. "Especially in this world, it's not like you chose to be placed with us. You're mingling with us 'cause you kinda have to. I guess that's a pretty simple way of looking at it, though. ... and honestly, I'm, uh, not sure what to say about the rest of that."

"And I'm happy to stay out of that kind of thing," Tina agrees firmly. "I'm not prepared to deal with evil spirits and all. I might never be. It's funny, though... Christmas is seen as a happy time for a lot of mortals," she muses. "Me included. There's no sense of danger or fear that stuff might go wrong. That must mean the rest of you are doing your job well, though."

"I'm glad," Tina replies sincerely. "It does make me a little sad, just because it makes me think about my family and how long I've been separated from them... but I refuse to sit and mope, too."

"I hope so," Tina says, clenching her fist. "My mom WAS here for a while, but she left. And now that the spirits that were in the Porter are gone, who knows? Something has to give... we're all going to be back where we belong some day."

Tina smiles at the little touch, nodding.

"And at least I know she and Dad and my siblings are safe. They don't know that I've gone. Otherwise I'd feel a lot worse about the whole thing."

"It would wreck my family," Tina says softly. "My siblings and I are everything to my parents... and they're everything to me."

Tina thinks on that a moment.

"Mmm, just over a year, I think. She tried mothering so many of the teenagers here."
continuousgroaning: (well crap)

"It's not something I like to think about," Tina confesses. "I'm lucky to have come from a loving family, though. To know that they would miss me, if it came to that."

And there's that ache in Tina's chest- sharper than it has been in a while. That yearning to just be where she truly belongs, and the regret that the longer she spends here, the more difficult it is to have sharp, clear images of her beloved family, due to the distance between them.

"I can only imagine," Tina says. "And I'm glad she had an outlet for that, since she didn't have my siblings to chase after. I feel like I want to have kids of my own some day, just because she's set such a good example for me."

Tina nods soberly- and, thinking of Jimmy Pesto, she realizes not everyone should be blessed with kids. Despite her mixed feelings toward Jimmy Jr., she knew his father could... not be the best, to put it mildly.

"I'd appreciate that, thank you," she replies with a smile.
