catch-all log for september // open + closed prompts
WHO: Jane Foster + others (closed prompts and free for all’s)
WHERE: Various
WHEN: September 01-30
WHAT: Various prompts and scenarios
WARNINGS: Minor monster fighting violence and horror in some prompts
A // SCIENCE IS LEARNED BEST BY DOING // Closed to David
Jane, so far, had been settling into the role as ‘professor’ … sort of alright. She is still getting the hang of making decent tests and planning a class before she teaches it, but where she is really shining is the labs. Mostly because she is applying everything that she wishes her own teachers and professors did more of (and less of in some cases).
Today’s demonstration is going to be interesting, because while they have only started the topic of gravity, she figured that dropping an apple on the ground is a little boring. So, why not use her own powers? Why not have her students record what happens and figure out the changes she is making? See if she is just making something up or if she is replicating the gravity of another planet or moon, as they discussed the last meeting?
She is also excited because she has invited David to see, as he was curious about her powers and it really sounded like he needed to be around more people his own age. As all of her students are of the upper college levels, he should be fitting right in.
B // ALWAYS WEAR YOUR SAFETY GOOGLES // Open
Besides at the school, Jane also practices at home and in a nearby park. In a clear field, far away from the playground so kids don’t accidentally get caught up in her experiments, she has a number of objects, ranging from a pencil to a thick textbook. She will be working on endurance, lifting the objects as long as she can without breaking into a sweat or headache.
And, of course, writing everything down, because what was she? An amateur?
Feel free to ask her questions, break her concentration, get caught up in the gravitational manipulation, anything really!
C // THERE IS A FIFTH DIMENSION // Closed to Peter, Marco, Thor, David, and other housemates
Watching a remake and not knowing about the original, honestly. What was the world coming to? Watching the original was essential! It either made you appreciate the remake (if it was better or more interesting or something) or it made you appreciate the original more (if it sucked). She was not surprised that Peter did not know about VHS tapes, given how young he was, but she was sure he would appreciate DVDs and digital downloads more when he saw them.
Still, finding a good chunk of the original Twilight Zone—and some of her favorite episodes—on any format was absolutely brilliant. Sure, they didn’t come out until the late 60s in her world and it was supposedly the 50s here, but she was not questioning this.
She also had to admit that she was eager to see Thor. When she was dropped into this place, he had landed on her patio just a few days ago, apparently deciding to stay on Earth as opposed to Asgard. She did not doubt his intentions, but she had a feeling that one way or another, something would draw him back to outer space and all it encompassed. She just hoped that this time, she would be able to go with him and not get possessed by something.
“Peter?” she asked, knocking on their front door. “It’s Jane! I brought the videos!”
D // WHAT MADNESS IS THIS // Open
Jane was starting to feel a throb in her temples, but she was not letting up.
She had no idea what was going on. This was like some really bad, cheesy B movie and it was getting on her nerves how these little gargoyle like things kept coming back.
Like mosquitoes, but worse.
“Ugh!” she yelled, blasting some more away from her by creating a gravitational field around her and pushing as hard as she could. She would figure out the math later.
E // WHISPER, WHISPER, WHISPER // 09-10-2019 // Open
“Oh … god …”
Whatever that sound was, whatever it was coming from, Jane wanted no part of it. Everyone who could was running from the bridge and—
“No!”
She ran as fast as she could. She had no idea how far her powers would stretch, but she would do her best to catch the two people who had just jumped. Hopefully, she would not be caught in the clutches of whatever Lovecraftian horror was hiding in the shadows.
F // WILD CARD // Open
Fall is a wonderful time of year! New constellations are on the rise, people are starting to incorporate more pumpkins and cinnamon into everything, and finally, the horror that is heat and humidity is starting to die like it should.
Got something else you’d like to do with Jane? Throw it at me, I’m game!

THERE IS A FIFTH DIMENSION Sublog thingy
He wore Red and gold running pants, and a tracksuit shirt, one of a dark green, that showed his slowly shrinking form, and his eyes were wide as he opened the door, staring. And then a slow grin widened his face and he nodded.
"Jane." One word, one simple and yet very important word, and he stepped forward. Prepare yourself, oh mighty one, for Thor!hugs were imminent!
There was shock and joy in his mind and heart, along with curiosity, and hope. And so much more.
As he stepped forward, his voice rose and shook through the house like thunder.
"Peter! Jane is here!"
no subject
"You made it," he says. "Welcome, uh. To Thor's house?" Technically there are other housemaates, but as far as he's concerned, it's Thor's. "Where's the video?"
Yeah, he's looking straight at those VHS tapes. And not seeing them.
no subject
Jane hugged Thor back tightly as she could, though her strength would never compare to his. Thor hugs were simply the best. It was wonderful to see him, to hear his voice. It had been a month or so and she missed him dearly. But, she was not oblivious that there was a lot different about him, but they could have that conversation later.
“Right here,” she said, lifting the bag up once Thor put her down again. “And if you don’t have a VCR, I got that covered too. We just need a television.”
no subject
"It's okay, everyone. I'm here, so we're allowed to have fun now. No longer do you all have to despair or endure a Marco-less evening."
Also. Wait.
"Wait, do you seriously not recognize tapes, Peter?"
Science!
Rock Climbing Berry flavored of course, and settled into reading a book. Well before Jane's lecture starts he's quite placed to find that he's neither the oldest nor the youngest person present. He's part of the bell curve, the average, and that makes him breathe a bit easier.Even if he does have more degrees than everyone in the room combined.
He even manages a nice, half-flirting conversation with a spirited young woman who clearly is meant to be in theoretical physics in the future, before Jane even shows up in class. There he's definitely a bit different too. He's the only one without a notebook, instead watching Jane silently from his back row seat, smiling the whole while.
And when class ends he accepts, with his best charming smile, the young woman's contact information before heading down to talk to Jane.
"Your students are friendly," he observes as he stops near her and offers his hand
gloved of courseto Jane. "A pleasure to finally meet."no subject
“Likewise,” she says as she shakes his hand. “I lucked out. A majority of them are good students. The ones who weren’t cut out dropped the class already. What did you think of the demonstration?”
no subject
Which he isn't saying she lacks, just that it would be a mess to deal with.
no subject
"I might do something like a soda can for that experiment. We could even get some rubber mallets and see how their force calculations compare."
She should do that when she gets home. See if there is a difference between her using her powers and typical means of doing the same thing.
no subject
He takes a sip of his energy drink and smiles. What? It has been a long week. And he is tired. Super tired. The drink helps.
“You almost make me wish I had actually gone to school.”
no subject
She totally understands, even though her preferred source of caffeine is coffee.
"Who says you still can't? Some of my students are as old as me. College is kind of the same no matter your age."
no subject
"I'm considering putting my medical degrees to use, which, with the imPort thing, would preclude me from really having time for school."
Still, his eyes cast back into the room and there is maybe some sort of longing there. This was the life he'd always wanted.
"I got into Harvard you know. Never had a chance to go."
no subject
"That's right. Medical isn't the kind of job you can easily schedule. Not like a cashiering job, at least."
She notices the wistful look in his eye and wishes there was something she could do.
"That's amazing. I wish you had the opportunity to."
no subject
"No, it's not the easiest on a personal life. And when you're a neurosurgeon of the caliber of Steven Strange, it gets a bit harder to justify keeping those skills to yourself."
He could help a lot of people. Not that he'd ever wanted to be a doctor. There is definitely a question of moral and ethical obligations with the knowledge he retained, especially here, where he'd be allowed to use it.
"But Harvard was against mutants, so they didn't want me until I lost my mutation. Go figure."
no subject
"I don't know who that is, but I'm guessing he's good?"
That kind of gray area is a good reason not to go into a certain field. Jane herself could never go into medical either, simply because she wasn't sure if she could trust herself with someone else's life.
At his comment on Harvard, she wrinkles her nose.
"That is utterly—! I'm not going to claim to know everything about your situation there, but that they would discriminate like that!"
Hopefully, he wouldn't have to deal with that here, in this world.
no subject
Of course his gray area is grayer when one considers the issue of his power. Touching patients would be a problem. Medicine seems the best use of himself, but geez.
As it Harvard? David shrugs.
“They framed it that they couldn’t account for the safety of a mutant. I’m certain it has more to do with my specific mutation. They’d have to make sure I was never near an instructor or another student when doing homework or papers, would have to have tests and quizzes proctored by people who knew nothing on the topic and on a different part of campus.”

It was a familiar sight even if not caused by the exact same methods.
Which may be why, stepping a little closer, Jane will find that on her next attempt to lower something back down the object won't move, it held by Lilith's power instead, a hand outstretched from the woman, grip on the air as if holding something.
And only when she believes that Jane's seen her does she guide it back down with a motion of her hand.
"What did you learn?"
Hopefully not to overdo it like when they'd spoken before.
no subject
“More control,” she replied. “And the gravitational constant is still the same. I didn’t know you could do something similar.”
Maybe they could expand on the experiment, if she was interested.
no subject
A power more vast than anyone else's here given that the nature of it was magic, letting her do and affect so much.
She steps closer, moving slightly through the group of her students.
"You seem less affected than before."
no subject
Jane had no idea that she was able to use magic, but it was a fairly common ability to lift and move objects.
"Yeah, I've scaled back how much I practiced each day and got some methods to deal with the headaches as they come. They're no longer as bad as they were."
no subject
So it sounded. Lilith waits until she's close to her, voice quieter as she speaks again.
"It's a common power where I'm from. At least amongst witches."
It's only being in this place that has made her more freely admit it.
no subject
She could have gone on in life without knowing what a migraine was like, though.
"Witches?" she repeats, curiously. "You have magic in your world?"
Jane would be happy to hear that she is more comfortable with saying that, even if it took being brought to another universe.
no subject
Yes, she knows of people who practice witchcraft that don't have any real power but still, witches did imply magic.
"Unless it means something else to you?"
no subject
"Well, it's a pretty broad term. In my world, there is magic, but there are civilizations where science and magic are one and the same."
no subject
She sounds incredibly dubious about that.
"And how does that work?"
