WHO: lilith + you WHERE: various libraries, her work, coffee shops, bookstores WHEN: during september WHAT: many days in the life of ms. wardwell WARNINGS: tbd
( there are many topics that she's looking for information on. lachesis, what this world says about magic, life before the imports. history is important to her, not solely because it may help them but a personal curiosity, to get a better feeling for the world.
rather than pulling out many books lilith is very selective about what she takes, taking her time to peruse each aisle, weighing up what may be possible. her choices typically come as larger books, some that may seem quite old.
lilith finds herself a quieter corner to sit in, letting the book sit on the table, slowly leafing through it. she doesn't make notes, more interested in the reading. on the days where she's there for lengthier periods she may be seen conjuring some tea or after flicking pages for several hours using her magic to turn the page )
[ It's strange, living in a big city. A lot of buildings. A lot of people. Of course, that's about the closest to normal of their situation, what with being imPorts and such, but a small boy is a small boy, and a small boy has his own priorities.
With all his exploring, he'd find the library, and remembered what Lilith had said to him. That's what leads him to actually going inside, taking a curious look around, not sure where to start.
Some wandering around sections he could care less about, vaguely taking in some titles, but then something causes him to turn. A feeling.
And, soon enough, he finds her, in her quiet corner, with her tea and her books.]
( lilith has very few needs. maybe it's come from her longer life or maybe because of the life she's lived. a lot that she could want lilith can do with magic causing her trips when she does go out into the cities to be much more specific.
sometimes you just need a change of scenery and a cup of tea. there's occasionally a small pastry accompanying it, something more often ignored in favour of said tea.
when lilith does shop she looks for books or finds something that could be similar to an apothecary. she looks for history or for magic, whether truthful or not, for potential ingredients. she isn't at home and you'll never know when you'll need some incense or apple blossoms. or a poppet.
she's very careful at selecting her ingredients, taking only small quantities or asking careful, knowing questions about them -- freshness, how they were collected or created. just for good measure she also purchases a candle )
[ Crowley almost never goes shopping - he doesn't have to. Anything he wants or needs, he can miracle into existence. It's the angel who, long ago, decided that human-made items were somehow better. Some nonsense about how quirky their little mistakes are, or whatever.
The thing is, he collects books. With typesetting errors. Specifically, Bibles with typesetting errors. Since the invention of the printing press, there have been all sorts, and Aziraphale just loves getting his hands on them - the weirder, the better.
Which brings Crowley to a dusty little shop that sells books and other occult paraphernalia - if he can't find a weird Bible, maybe he'll find a book of prophecy that's unique to this dimension, which would be just as good!
"Good" in the sense that Aziraphale would like it, and he doesn't even have to pretend he's doing something other than trying to buy a gift for his... well. Lover? That's sort of what they are now.
Either way, he is both disappointed and unsurprised to find another demon present in this particular shop. ]
Planning to summon someone?
[ He says it lightly, conversationally, not even looking up from his perusal of the bookshelves. ]
( she feels it too before he speaks, both noticing and ignoring his presence, the briefest of scans to see who it is before stepping further along the row to browse the titles.
and then the question comes. her response is off-hand, almost dismissive-- )
I wouldn't need a book for that.
( lilith has those rituals firmly embedded in her memory, though whether or not she was equipped for it she also wasn't planning it. she had no one that she would summon here.
so she takes a few more steps before she pauses, having found an interesting title. and she uses her magic to slide it from its high shelf, a gentle beckon with two fingers that carefully slides it out and into her hands.
and then she turns her head in his direction )
Concerned?
( whether or not she was planning it-- she didn't need to defend herself to questions )
[ She's memorized the spells, how cute. Crowley is torn between seeing her as a threat and finding her amusing at this point. She's a demon who acts like a human witch, and he'll always have trouble taking those seriously. ]
You know, it is possible I'm just making conversation. I suppose I could talk about the weather, but does anybody really care about that?
( he'll have trouble then when it turns out that she actually is a witch, was for centuries before she ever became a demon. she's the first witch, at least for her world. the first woman )
Maaking conversation-- about summoning. Demons, I'll assume. Or something worse.
( she assumes based on his previous reaction to her, though really what else would a demon stereotypically summon? )
[ It's something of a blessing that they ran into each other in Jeopardy when they did. And so when the question of would you like to stock up on supplies? crops up, Anathema leaps at the opportunity like seizing on a piece of bait, her teeth sinking down. Anathema has her new home, her new job, but her bedroom's empty and so are her pockets and she's entirely out of supplies to scry with, or brew potions with. Or even just make a good cup of tea with.
So, today, she's armed with a notebook and a pen, and hastily jotting down the names of stores as Mary Wardwell takes her round to them and her tote bag slowly fills up with ingredients over the course of their shopping trip. ]
How about an apothecary for the, hm, rarer ingredients? Back home, some places would look at you funny if you asked for eye-of-newt.
( had she ever expected that she'd be taking a witch magic shopping? no. but it was-- pleasant. to have someone knowledgable with her, to see what anathema knew and could do and even to simply talk magic. oh, she had sabrina but their relationship was something a little different to this. and she was still feeling anathema out so she'd taken (again) a sort of mentor-ish role, guiding her around the shops even if not in her craft )
The same could be said here. They may be familiar with powers, whether they wish to be or not, but witches are-- different.
( they certainly possessed a different sort of power, particularly with the wide range of what they could do in comparison to a single, contained power )
Though we'll need a different city for that.
( and rather than use a porter lilith had another way of getting them there. she holds out a hand to anathema )
[ It was almost predictable, how easy it was to settle under this woman's metaphorical wing. Something about Wardwell just rang of wise teacher; her rich voice reminded Anathema of long hours as a child, sitting at her mother's elbow, avid and patient and hungry to learn. And so it's a little touch of home, in this strange universe. ]
Wait, do you mean that you can teleport on your own?
[ The best way to demonstrate something is to just do it, though, and so Anathema takes her hand. ]
( the fact that even with the question there anathema still takes her hand makes her smile ever so slightly, a firm grip on the other woman's mere seconds before they fade, their location slipping out and back in as they appear in maurtia falls, close to one of the shops that lilith was considering.
though she steps slightly back she doesn't yet let go of anathema's hand, just in case the woman was unsteady at all, unused to doing such a thing )
( why anyone looked at her and thought that this would be her job-- though why lilith also agreed to take it could be a question that could be asked. teaching as ms. wardwell was one thing and whilst it was tedious she surprisingly found it rewarding. history was important to her and having the students learn it, know it, even answer further unrelated questions about it--
but being a life coach was something else. she did have to admit that it granted her a lot of free time, though she also kept very loose hours. she'd set it up to be-- relaxed. her appointments came to her phone, lilith set somewhere to meet and they talked. or rather she listened, tried not to visibly roll her eyes and gave them suggestions of how to fix it. they were always very helpful and accurate but-- mortals.
so maybe you're the person that she's supposed to be meeting, set up in a cafe so she can at least drink some tea. it's very relaxed, no notes, no information, just talking. or maybe you're someone nearby that's overheard the last meeting, offering condolences for what she's had to listen to or even wanting to employ her advice )
[ The fact that Chloe ended up there was entirely accidental - she didn't want to keep bumping into Lilith, all things considered, and she is on the fence about whether or not she really even likes her.
No, she's not on the fence about that. Chloe doesn't really like her.
Still, she can't help but overhear what comes across as a therapy session gone wrong and, considering the setting, Chloe is fairly certain that isn't what this is supposed to be. When the person finally leaves (even Chloe is relieved about that, their life sounds like a train wreck and employing advice from the Queen of Hell isn't going to fix it) she turns in her chair, a smirk playing across her face. ]
Please tell me you're not supposed to be a therapist.
[ It's a good thing Chloe wasn't drinking because the snort that comes out of her nose probably would have sprayed her coffee everywhere. ]
Wow. It's like they figure out one thing we might be kind of good at and then run with it in totally the wrong direction.
[ It isn't fair for her to laugh, because Chloe definitely didn't find her own job placement very funny, but she can't help it, either. It's like a practical joke. ]
You're literally forced to help mortals to get a paycheck. That has to be killing you.
( though still irritated there's a slightly resigned look to her expression, a slight hand gesture that only adds to it )
I've done worse.
( and whilst this was certainly irritating and was far from what lilith ever really wanted to do with her life-- well, she might not care about mortal wishes but she somehow did know life. even if her advice was very biased )
Lilith stays quiet for a moment, not quite certain what to say regarding said daughter. Children are-- a tricky subject for her, both wiccan and demon alike. But that Eve mentions her-- and in such a positive light. Well, this daughter may not really be hers but it's still nice to hear.
The more pressing thing, the thing that was easier to focus on was the subject of power. Eve may be-- naive, she may have happily lived in Adam's shadow for her entire existence but Lilith didn't believe that she couldn't take her power back. Guidance yes but she'd done well already in that brief conversation.
"You do now."
It may have been given to her by the people that had brought here but all power was given by someone.
"My power was given to me by the false god." Something that she'd always had and that, perhaps against what He'd have liked, had helped her survive all of those centuries before Lucifer had found her.
"He gave it to me but I used it. I made it my own. Yours-- is a different magic but still effective." And if Eve could properly wield it, Satan help them. She could be very powerful. "And it can help to get you what you want."
Children were a tricky subject for Eve too; something of a landmine, one that she still had yet to come to terms with, with Lucifer and Chloe. She was not sure if it was necessary, to be honest. A conversation about her son and the evil he constantly came back to was only one of sadness. Charlotte was not the first person to come to Heaven as a victim of his viciousness. Time was a tricky thing too, thousands of years to accept what was out of her hands helped ease some of the pain, but none of the gilt. A problem for another day.
Power was a dangerous thing, she knew that much. She had never experienced it herself, but she knew of the downfall of it from a far distance away. Watching humanity, speaking to them in the afterlife, she saw the aftermath. That being said, power in her own hands? It could be life-changing.
Her eyebrows furrowed as she tilted her head at Lilith. "The false god? There are multiple gods in your world?" She didn't doubt Lilith. She would believe what she told her, especially now that she knew they were in strange parallel like situations, a different version of someone they both knew. Or only knew by reputation, in her case.
Eve grimaced. "I'm glad I didn't have these before I got here. I don't know that I would have used them wisely. I've had kind of a rough few weeks." There was no proof that she would have used this power on Lucifer, that would have been a terrible thing that she couldn't forgive herself for, but she also didn't have proof that she would have chosen the right thing. Desperation did not bring out the best in people. Love could be harmful, as she proved to herself.
Was that a compliment? Perhaps. For as naive and open as this woman was Lilith wanted to think that there was still some intelligence to her, that if she knew how to use her powers that it wouldn't be so baffling for her.
"Something you'll learn now."
Not right now, not even necessarily with her (she wasn't exactly offering to teach her but she could do advice) but it would happen. It had to.
Eve smiles at her, touched whether Lilith meant to be touching or not. "That's a very supportive thing to say, thank you." She was going to say nice, but she gets the sense with Lilith's cool and calm exterior she might not appreciate that. Still, she means it. For her to have that kind of unexpected faith in an Eve she just met is lovely. And very feminist!
"I probably should, otherwise I'll accidentally do it to people." Eve doesn't want to be someone who takes away the free will of others, especially not because she's too foolish to learn how to do it properly. "But I will probably have to practice on willing people. Do you think I should just ask in general?" Eve is absolutely someone who would go up and ask someone if she could have permission to use superpowers on them.
Feminist is entirely her deal and whether or not she knows Eve-- well, there's a part of Lilith that pities her. Lilith knows that Eve's existence is what was expected for her, that Eve's choice at getting to making her own decision was forcibly taken from her -- she was created to submit to Adam. And it angers her, her whole reason for the positive attitude coming from her. She'd make her own choices now, empowered by others. By someone who got it.
"You may want to ask someone you trust."
They would at least trust what Eve would do with her power whilst testing her control. Strangers didn't typically wish to have powers used against them, particularly not something that would affect their own will and decision making. Lilith knew that she wouldn't want to agree to such a thing.
