JANUARY SWEAR-IN: DEATH ISLAND
WHO: Everyone!
WHERE:Death Sacrifice Island, New Zealand
WHEN: 13th January
WHAT: SWEARING-IN TIME, on the beautiful Island of New Zealand, Sacrifice Island.
WARNINGS: None so far
Welcome everyone to Sacrifice Island, once known as “Death Island” (and still called so by many). Located in the beautiful country of New Zealand, and under their government’s jurisdiction, Sacrifice Island is a place where investigation and scientific development happens: it’s the headquarters for Onward Research Station, laboratories that hope to learn how to neutralize the effects on humans/animals of chemical/biological weapons.
But this island holds dark history as well. It was in this very same place that seven young imPorts permanently lost their lives on October 3rd 2008. This tragedy deeply marked the history of United States and all Heroes of the nation, and is remembered with heavy heart. With hopes to never forget these painful events but to also look for a brighter future, United States of America and New Zealand both joined their hands and decided to raise a memorial for the lives lost at the island.
This memorial will be inaugurated on the 13th January along with the Swearing-In ceremony for the new heroes who have arrived this month. Media has been invited as well as this is too a political event to strengthen relationships between New Zealand and USA. Old and new imPorts are all welcome to come and pay their respects to the Heroes who are gone, swear their allegiance to the US government (or not), forge relations with a foreign country or simply show their presences during this event. Whatever reason one has, they will be welcomed.
TRAVEL
Thanks to the interest of many, an airbus has been generously loaned for free in order to fly the imPorts to Death Sacrifice Island. The airbus includes a dining area and each imPort has their own little cubicle, with chairs that can be converted into a bed. The trip will take a while for sure, so the travelers are welcome to mingle while they are on air, meet the new faces, and try some delicious airplane food. Or they can try sleeping, if other imPorts are quiet enough.
Because it's a long flight, there will be many movies to choose from: there is a strangely big collection of Adam Sandler movies, and apparently the big hit has both Adam Sandler AND Jerry Seinfeld and tells the story of a Wasp that falls in love with a Human, while it leads a rebellion against the humankind. If you aren't into Wasp movies, well- good luck picking something else that isn't as amazing.
ISLAND
Miss the hot summer weather? Well, New Zealand certainly has a lot of it to offer. The weather is the kind that would invite anyone for a swim, even though it’s not one of the activities offered during the Swear-In; in fact, the island has no beaches as it’s surrounded by cliffs. The island itself is beautiful, with a lot of greenery indigenous to the country, forming large forests through the island’s surface and surrounding the research center. There are no animals roaming around, with the exception of some birds (do not expect Kiwis, though), but imPorts are warned not to go too deep into the island’s forests or they might get lost.
At the east area of the island, stands the top of the art Onward Research Station, near the only beach the island offers. The airbus will land not too far away, in a small flight track that crosses the green forest, and imPorts will be directed to the center where they will be greeted by scientists, politicians and, of course, a lot of media.
Onward Research Station is white, clean, and shiny. Everything looks like it has been double or triple sterilized and visitors can almost see their reflections on every surface. The technology is probably the best you’d find in the entire nation: quick silent hoover carts that transport people and objects from a section to another, trays that hoover with food, snacks and drinks, and holograms of several scientists that made a difference while working at the Research Station can be found on specific marked areas. ImPorts that wish to know a bit more about the place will have the chance to press a button for a holographic guide who will tell them the story of the Center, their researches and hopes for the future.
However, since Onward focus on chemical and biological weapon studies, much of the area is very much Off Limits to prevent accidental contamination. There will be security (physical and electronically) to stop people from snooping around and causing huge accidents.
The center has allowed local tourism to be part of this. New Zealand certainly wishes to show their own culture, and thus there will be many who are eager to share it with the new comers. Talks of their fauna and flora, their national bird as well, history of Maori who voyaged across the Pacific, good old Rugby, and of course mentions of certain really popular fantasy movies that have been filmed there – one can certainly become immerse in this lovely world. Not so far away, there is also a buffet area with a lot of variety, all typical New Zealand dishes, including Maori dishes naturally. Try Hangi, or lamb, or delicious sea food, and end your meal with good wine and cheese.
Photographers, journalists, paparazzi will be everywhere. Not just for US ImPort Heroes, but due to the political connotations this meeting has as well. It’s no surprise that apart from “who are you wearing”, heavier and much more serious questions will be asked, involving politics, past events, current political feelings, where and for whom imPorts stand for.
The nearby beach isn’t amazing, but they worked really hard to change that. The whole area was cleaned as well, with new, white and shiny pavement that leads visitors to a special area: the memorial. There is a huge marble wall with the names of those imPorts who’ve lost their lives; there is a screen as well, and whenever someone touches one of the names said screen will activate show a video of the selected imPort while a voice tells the visitors a little about their life and death. Nearly, there is another holographic guide who, when activated, will tell the story of Death Island.
MEMORIAL
Anyone can access this history by checking out the Memorial, but in the afternoon, everyone will be invited to the beach. Here, imPorts and everyone else will be taught the dark history of the island by a spokeswoman dressed in white, while the screen on the Memorial Marble wall shows the lost imPorts.
“A scientist who held hatred for the imPorts used this island as his private base of operations, where he built a deadly ray and threatened to use this weapon against the United States. Seven imPorts heroically followed to investigate, only to find this ray permanently end their lives. These heroes and their tragic deaths are today remembered by us all, a memory of a dark and sad past – but we too hold on to hope, hope their deaths were not in vain, and hope we can rebuild and move forward.”
The speech is met with solemn nods and soft applause, while the names of the Heroes show on the screen:
DAVID GREEN; Chosen, age 19
MAGENTA MOVELLO; Mauve Avenger, age 17
IRA BRAUNSTEIN; Power Prince, age 21
JUDE BYEON; Bludgeon, age 17
CAROL "CARRIE" KING; Reign, age 18
MASON LOCKLEAR; Entropy, age 16
MALIK ISAIAH MARCHETTI; Journey, age 40
After, the woman will give stand to few more people who will give their own words about the memorial and the events of Death Island, including a New Zealand Minister and also an imPort: Tohru Adachi.
Once speeches have been spoken, people are welcomed to leave white flowers near the marble wall and learn more about the personal lives of each lost hero by touching their names and watching the movie about each. For those who don’t wish to stick around, the buffet area is always open, and people are more than welcome to return to their activities.
RETURN
The event will be over late night, and all imPorts will be brought back to the airbus. Since there are records who came on the airbus, it’s better not to try to stay behind – as welcoming as they were, those who work at Sacrifice Island have no plans to accommodate everyone more than necessary.
Media will be the first to leave, followed by imPorts and finally every politician involved. Once up in the air, the airplane lights will be turned to minimum, to allow imPorts some well needed rest. That is, if they want. Sorry if your neighbor is noisy.

(Why 'protection' is the word that comes to mind, he doesn't know. Sora can't hurt him with a look...just with his entire existence.)
The approach of the stewardess interrupts his train of thought, which is good, because Roxas doesn't know where it was going anyway. At least, it's good until she says that; he accepts the cup automatically, because that's what you do when someone hands over a container of liquid you don't want to spill on yourself, but that doesn't stop him from gaping or blurting out his own response a moment after he finds his voice.]
Brother?!
[She blinks, apparently uncertain. Boy, can he relate.]
"Aren't you twins? You look nearly identical."
[He doesn't even know how to respond to that; he can't, so he just stares so mow, mouth hanging slightly open as a whisper of memory creeps into the back of his mind.
I've been to see him...he looks a lot like you.]
no subject
We get that a lot, but no. We're not, actually. Thank you for the cocoa.
[The stewardess blinks again for one last and is about to question it when the call sign a few seats over gets pressed and she excuses herself. Sora's face is absolutely scarlet and he doesn't really understand why he should be embarrassed to be mistaken for Roxas' brother, but it definitely doesn't help with his current situation.
Or with Roxas wanting nothing to do with him.
There are a few more moments of dead air between them, the awkward silence drags on a few seconds more until Sora clears his throat.]
Uh... if your mouth still tastes weird then maybe the cocoa will help.
no subject
(What should he think about being brothers? That's even more lost on him. Nobodies don't have family, after all; Roxas less than most. The other members of the Organization might have been able to remember the family they had when they were human, but he had nothing to begin with. Sora's life isn't something that gets shared with him; it's something that takes precedence over him.)
He still doesn't know what to say when the stewardess leaves, so he doesn't say anything and starts drinking the cocoa instead, not looking away.]
no subject
[And then he grimaces, because of course Roxas would know that it's hot, the heat's radiating through the paper cup. He makes eye contact, and for a moment he just sits quietly, looking at a face that should be all too familiar to him but it belongs to someone he doesn't really know, not truly. Roxas is a closed book written in a language he doesn't understand.
He casts his eyes down again, cradling his cup of cocoa in his hands to swirl it about a bit. It's a distraction.]
Whenever I had a bad dream when I was little, my mom used to make me cocoa. She'd say it would give me sweet dreams instead of mean ones. Seems kinda silly now, but I never used to get nightmares after cocoa.
[He takes a sip of his cocoa and wishes Roxas would say something.]
...I thought it might help.
no subject
(He'll regret this later. Even light mouth scorching is the pits.)
He keeps expecting Sora to get up and go back to his seat, any second now, but he sticks around and actually tries talking again. Roxas feels a flicker of respect for that. Maybe that's why he listens instead of telling Sora to leave.]
Must be nice. To have a mom.
[He mutters it nearly into his cocoa and quickly takes another sip to avoid saying anything more about that. Because if Sora has a mom, then that makes her Roxas's mom too in a way, doesn't it? Or maybe she just used to be, back when they were one person.
No. It doesn't matter now. She wouldn't want him anyway. She'd only pick Sora, a real son and a real person, just like all the others. It's fine. He doesn't need a mom anyway.
The cocoa is pretty good.]
...thanks.
no subject
[He takes a sip of his cocoa and considers that he's just heard. It had been quiet and half under his breath but Sora still heard it, and it's something that he hadn't stopped to think about before. Roxas hadn't had a mom or dad to look out for him, to check up on him when he had nightmares or a bad day. He hadn't had anything like that.
It must have been so lonely.
And what would his parents make of suddenly being presented with Roxas, this boy who's so like him in some ways but so completely different? Would they be horrified at the way he'd been treated? Would they welcome him into the family? Sora likes to think they would.
But then again... he's spent so much time away from them, does he really even know them any more? Would they even know him?
Wow. Suddenly he really misses them.]
So... how've things been going for you?
no subject
He doesn't even know where to start to find the answer. All along, whether he'd been a valuable tool purposely kept in the dark or a clueless victim of brainwashing who barely knew what the Keyblade was, Sora hadn't been anything more than a concept that deeply affected his life without ever getting to touch it. Roxas had certainly never thought of him as a person or imagined what he might think, feel, say. Even when he'd gotten a very close look and been locked away in the darkest corners of Sora's heart, his questions hadn't had much to do with Sora as a person, just his significance to the worlds.
Why you?
Why you and not me?
He has an inkling of understanding now, but that doesn't answer any of his other questions.]
Fine, I guess. Boring. [Another sip.] There's not much to do.
no subject
[Sora turns his attention to him again, looking puzzled. There's plenty to do! You just need to get out there and go looking for it. There's people to meet and friends to make, restaurants and parks, and shops and movie theatres and ice cream parlours, he knows Roxas would like that!
But... those places aren't much fun to go to on your own. He hopes Roxas has nice housemates to hang out with, that'd make all the difference to him.]
You know... if you wanted... you could always come hang out with us. If you're bored. We could get pizza and play some games.
no subject
There are no Heartless here, and there are no friends either.]
No.
[He snaps out an answer immediately, the look he gives Sora mostly bafflement mixed with a little insult.]
Are you serious?
no subject
What did he say that was so wrong for Roxas to react like this? He didn't want to upset him, he honestly thought it might help.]
Well... yeah. I don't want you to be alone here Roxas, and if you need someone to hang out with or just talk to... you can always talk to me.
[He doesn't know how to make amends, or even talk to the other boy without upsetting him. It had felt easier in the dream, when they'd met each other and Roxas had been open and willing to talk but he's not even sure if he can trust that memory anymore.]
Roxas, I just... all I want to do is make things right.
no subject
Sora hadn't been a real person to him before. Roxas had never had the opportunity to consider what kind of person he is, what he'd do and say if they had the opportunity to meet as people instead of two existences that were mutually exclusive, if Sora knew him.
Now he is. It doesn't make any of this easier.]
Just like that. Like it's no big deal.
[That's the difference between them, isn't it? He'd seen it during their fight. To Sora, it is no big deal with reach out, make a connection, find a friend. That's why the worlds had needed him more than they needed Roxas.
But he'd still deserved to live.]
The time to make things right was before, when your friend and that man turned me into a different person and put me in that town! [To his horror, hot, angry tears are welling up behind his eyes. He refuses to let them fall.] When they left me to realize that everything I thought I cared about was fake and I had nothing to begin with.
That doesn't go away just because some porter brought us to another world and I'm not a prisoner anymore!
no subject
[Sora stares, looking at him in shock at the outburst. Maybe he's right, maybe it is too late... but he can't accept that. He can't accept that it's too late for Roxas. He can't accept that there's nothing they can do to repair the harm that's been done...
And... your friend and that man turned me into a different person and put me in that town...
Sora just doesn't know what to say. Is that what he means by a prisoner? Or does he mean...
Hypocrite... you are the one who has made your heart a prison... Even if you are not the prisoner.
He doesn't want to think that he's keeping anyone prisoner in his heart, especially when he thought - he hoped- that Roxas had found some peace in it. It doesn't make it better or mean he's any happier that Roxas has found himself a part of him when he should have had his own life to live independently of him, but what could he do? All the harm had been done before he'd even known a thing about it.]
I know, I know that.
[Sora looks down, puts his cocoa in a cup holder because his hands are shaking.]
I know a lot of terrible things happened to you that should never have happened to you. I know there's nothing I can do to take it back. I know it doesn't change anything being here but if I- I don't know how I can make it up to you. I just know that I have to, my heart won't let me do anything else.
Those feelings you had, those were real. That wasn't fake. And Axel wasn't fake, your friendship is real. You're his most important person, there's no faking that.
no subject
But then he'd kept fighting, because good Other or not, it was his only chance at existence, and some things can't be fixed.
He knows Sora never would have wanted anything bad to happen to him, or to anyone. He's not that kind of person. He wouldn't look at Roxas and think he was a mistake, or nothing, or even some kind of competition. Roxas doesn't know a lot about people, or even his original self, but he knows that for sure.
It doesn't matter that Sora didn't think that. Others had thought it for him, and acted on those thoughts.
His hands squeeze tight around his cup, because otherwise he'll probably drop it. A tear rolls down his cheek, and he turns his head to the side, ducking so that it's the dry side that's facing Sora.]
I don't want to talk about Axel.
[He misses him so much. Axel had been a jerk, sure, Roxas remembers that much now with as much clarity that's possible regarding something he hadn't fully understood at the time. Axel had known where Roxas came from, probably right from the beginning, and he'd lied about it to keep Roxas in the dark and circumstances as they were. He'd been right to walk away; he doesn't regret that, even now.
But he'd hoped that they could get better, once he found his answers. Roxas wonders if Axel understood, at the end, that he'd already forgiven him for everything. That they were still best friends.
He'll never know for sure. This is the second time he's lost Axel, or thought he did, and this time he knows that he'll never, ever see him again.]
no subject
[Why wouldn't he want to talk about Axel, his best friend? Is it because he misses him, and talking about him's too painful? Sora thinks that would help, keeping him close at heart, but he wouldn't dream of presuming that he knows about what's in Roxas' heart, even after sharing his memories.
Or at least... believing that he's shared his memories.
But what can he talk about now? It's weird, sitting here in this awkward silence thinking hard about picking his words and choosing how to go forward without inadvertently upsetting the other boy. He sits quietly, looking at his knees, and then hesitantly, tentatively, presses forward.]
Do you... really not remember us meeting after we fought?
no subject
I told you, none of that ever happened.
[Not for him. Clearly, it somehow did for Sora...unless this is some kind of trick. But he doubts that.]
I don't get how the porter could split us apart like that but not at the same time.
no subject
[He does look up then.]
When we fought, I didn't know who you were, but I wish I had. I wish I could have done more to help you. I wish I knew how the Porter did this so I could do the same thing back home.
[He offers up a hesitant smile that's almost shy.]
But I'm really glad you're here now. I'm glad... that you get to be you. Because you are you, no one else.
no subject
No one else has ever believed that.
[Not the Organization, which picked him because he was half of Sora. Not to that guy in the bandages, who discarded him for the same reason. Not even Namine, for all that she'd clearly meant the best for him. Only Axel ever saw him as more, and Roxas isn't even sure that's true—he thinks maybe Axel just didn't care who he was originally.]
no subject
Quietly, he looks across at Roxas and before he even stops to think about whether or not it's a sensible idea, he reaches across and gently puts his hand on his shoulder.]
I'm sorry.
[There's so much more he wishes he could say to help, to ease the obvious pain that the other boy is in, but honestly? He's not sure there's anything he could say to help.]
no subject
But he doesn't pull away.]
Thanks.
[It's small and quiet. He doesn't even look at Sora while he says it. But it's clear enough. And he means it.]
