AUGUST 2018 SWEARING-IN
WHO: NEW AND OLD IMPORTS ALIKE!
WHERE: De Chima City Hall
WHEN: August 17th, evening.
WHAT: A Swearing-In styled like A Midsummer Night's Dream.
WARNINGS: Please tag content warnings accordingly in your subject titles!

The De Chima City Hall building, neoclassical with modern touches to reflect its technologically urbane denizens, has the expanse and grandeur to host a very special masquerade this Swearing In. Now is a time for joy and ease, now is a time to forget the recent trauma you might have suffered in the month past. As the sun sets, you are invited into the decorated government building by Mayor Somerton. He wears a purple mask that covers his face, but will introduce himself as such regardless. You enter into the hall with the spiral staircase, which is decorated with floral arrangements -- enough to fit the feeling of a forest. The lighting remains dim, and strings of faerie lights are strung across the ceiling.

Strangely, while you can hear music -- a string quartet -- you cannot see the musicians. Nor can you detect any evident sound system. Three tables are set up front and center, and upon those tables are masks. You must choose a mask. You must wear a mask for the entire evening. You may change around your masks, should you have good reason to... But be warned, switching around courts might cause you some ill effects. These masks are the prototypes of a start-up company called MEDUSA INC. They will have a physical effect upon you, and new masks can detect the technological residue of other masks worn. And now that you think about it, maybe that's what you're looking for, with a little escapism, a little loosening from your typical restraint. Maybe you are looking for a little risk and a little nonsensical danger. Maybe that is exactly what you need.
The music stops -- suddenly. The lights go dark and a red hue filters through, shining into the darkness. That red means something, you can feel it in your bones. It's time to make a choice.

THE STARLIT SYMPHONY COURT
These masks come in different shapes and sizes, but they all evoke warmth and joy, they're yellow and gold and orange and white, they're like a supernova explosion. They're the heat of summer, the release of a late spring. They make you feel more confident, like anything is possible. These masks inspire and energize.
IF YOU REMOVE THIS MASK, YOU WILL FEEL: sluggish, moving at a much slower pace than you usually do. Drained. Alone.
THE BURNING BRIMSTONE COURT
These masks are all half-faced masks, and they imply a sense of smokiness, a mystery, some intrigue. Wearing one of these makes you feel like you're lost a a dark, ancient forest -- with a crackling, roaring threat not too far behind. These masks are woody, dark, green or black or brown. Earthen tones for their bases, but the edges burn with sharp reds and grays. These are masks of change, of transformation. You can't help but feel that you are Becoming, when you wear one.
IF YOU REMOVE THIS MASK, YOU WILL FEEL: anxious, unsure, stuck. Uneasy, nauseous. It will be hard to keep food and drink down.
THE DROWNING DERELICT COURT
These masks are like starry nights, black with bright speckles, constellations, or the deep purples and blues of a secret and unknown ocean. These are the depths of the soul, the yearning of the unfulfilled, these masks embody want and need and longing and ambition. Every one of these masks are equipped with a ribbon to tie around your head, which is less a binding and more a fragile reminder that you have your obligations to tend to, you have your duties. You aren't quite yet free.
IF YOU REMOVE THIS MASK, YOU WILL FEEL: emboldened, too emboldened in fact. Reckless, impulsive, irresponsible. You will take unwise risks. You will know a reality foreign to caution.
Any consequence from removing a mask will last strongly for the first hour of removal, then peter out by the second. After that, you will adopt the natural default of whatever mask you wear. Consequences CAN be mixed with locational effects from the floors above or below.
¤ ¤ ¤
You may move upwards to the floor above or downwards to the basement below. The basement below, a darkly midnight floor of labyrinthine hallways and cubicles, is considered to be Oberon's realm, and if you are of the STARLIT SYMPHONY COURT, you will feel the effects of alcohol or caffeine far quicker and far more potently than you typically do. If you are of the BURNING BRIMSTONE COURT, you will feel extra sensitive to physical touch. That might range anywhere from pins-and-needles to something more... Intimate.
The floor above is Titania's realm. Opened windows that invite in a nightly breeze, plenty of bright lights, warmth and joy; it almost feels like a sweet and soft afternoon, what with the way those bright, paper-thin lanterns glow, or the way those balls of faerie lights cluster. There are tables in white linen and chairs that could have been fitted to a country wedding, there are flutes playing, there is champagne flowing. If you are of the BURNING BRIMSTONE COURT, you are close to crying -- whether from untamed happiness or a tragic sadness, we cannot tell. The longer you stay, the more emotional you become. If you wear the masks of the DROWNING DERELICT COURT, then you are in for a most unpleasant surprise. You feel the need to lie to your company, and maybe you can repress it, but the need will become overwhelming. Deceit, distrust, it all begins to flow from your tongue. Perhaps starlight is not the best disinfectant.
The entry hall has returned to normal, no longer bathed in red and black. This is neutral ground, relatively speaking. Only BURNING BRIMSTONE COURT members may eat or drink of this floor, however, and if you violate that rule you must switch courts.

Entry Hall
Does the mask affect you, too?
no subject
Are you asking because I am a machine?
[ She doesn't sound offended though, only curious. ]
no subject
[With a rueful smile - ] If that's what you prefer to be called. I'm Barbara, by the way. [It's only fair, considering the invasive questions.]
no subject
My name is Danger.
That is what I prefer to be called.
[ She says all this rather matter-of-factly. ]
The mask and I are superficially interfaced.
It is difficult to tell at this point, but I would say that there have been some minor alterations to my behavior.
Do you feel different, Barbara?
no subject
...It's nice to meet you, Danger. I wouldn't say my behaviour's changed, at least so far, but I definitely feel different. Less like I'm at a party, more like I'm in the middle of a grand chase. The hunter or the hunted or both.
[Her brow furrows as she studies Danger's mask, like she's comparing it to a catalogue that isn't actually there.] That's Drowning Derelict, right?
no subject
Yes, you are correct.
This mask belongs to the Drowning Derelict court.
[ The mask of ambition and longing. The one that emboldens its wearer. Which may not mean too much to a stranger — someone who can't possibly know what kind of volatile being is hidden beneath that calm, impassive metal exterior — but then again, her name is Danger. True to her name, she's always a potential threat — even though she's only curious now, interested in deciphering this new person. ]
Do you enjoy a good chase, Barbara?
no subject
With a sly smile - ] More metaphorically, these days, but yes. [Even that is more open about herself than she'd usually be back home, but this is a state drowning in heroes. Just being an ImPort marks her as different. Might as well admit to it.]
Someone's probably studying who was drawn to what. [To be fair, so is she. She just doesn't have her own surveillance system anymore.]
no subject
You said "metaphorically."
Please elaborate.
no subject
She's not talking down to Barbara, either, which puts her ahead of plenty of standard humans.]
I chase information. Mysteries. Conspiracies. Involving, for example, masks that influence your mind.
no subject
[ She knows better than to judge by appearances. Barbara seems capable enough, and information is a formidable weapon. If she isn't talking down to Danger for being a machine, then Danger sees no reason to antagonize her. ]
Have you discovered anything interesting tonight, Barbara?
no subject
[She's going to miss her dad something fierce, before long.]
It's hard to judge how the masks affect anyone else when I don't know what they're usually like. Broadly speaking, though, Starlit Symphony seems to put a spring in your step, and that seems like the most popular so far. You can't eat or drink anything on this floor if you aren't wearing Burning Brimstone, so I assume the others have rules like that, too. Have you been up or down?
no subject
I feel a vague sense of wanting that is in excess of my baseline.
I also feel as if the barrier between myself and achieving those desires is somehow lowered.
It is difficult to quantify and articulate.
