A Holiday In the Mountains
WHO: Gold, Doc Brown, Newton and Hermann
WHERE: Cabin resort in the Rockies
WHEN: In the week or so leading up to Christmas
WHAT: As a way to help Doc unwind after a stressful start of the month, he's rented a cabin out and far away from sunny Florida, and invited his friends to join them. Multiple threads within.
WARNINGS: None as yet.
[Arriving]
While Gold's magic could bring them up to the cabin itself, he knew asking for a rented car to be waiting for them there would seem unusual, and he really didn't want to draw too much attention to the fact that ImPorts were coming this far away from their familiar military bases. So they arrived, really, at their car ride, which would take them up into the mountains of Utah. It was bitterly cold compared to Heropa, with snow on the ground but clear blue skies in the mid-afternoon that brings them up to their cabin.
It's large. Honestly, more than they would need, but space had been part of the draw.
Gold looks pleased with himself, at the very least. It had come at considerable expense -- he will never reveal how much, but so far, worth every penny. They would see if it added up in the end, however.

Doc - various
Doc had spent most of the ride up eagerly chatting about any subject that came to mind---the cold, the dogs' grooming routine, the holiday, how was doing. He'd been isolated and miserable for far too long, and this was the perfect remedy.
They'd hardly taken two steps inside before he set some old bags in the corner and unloaded them. They'd have to decorate for the holiday, of course, and he had the perfect first decoration: mistletoe, to be hung over every doorway.
He winked at the rest of the group, then began unloading his other decorations with a cheery grin. "Well, I know I can't leave it out of the equation entirely."
[daytime-snow]
And during the day, of course, there were the wonders of snow to explore. He crunched in it, threw it, but most importantly, he sculpted it. With the right tools and some patience and determination, they could have a glorious snow fortress. It was guarded by a fiercely protective pair of Samoyeds, of course...or not. His fuzzballs were having the time of their lives.
"...and down goes the south wall. Kepler, haven't you anything better to do?"
The aforementioned dog merely barked at him, tongue lolling in contentment.
[evening-kitchen]
Evenings were the best times, in his opinion. The snowfall over the landscape was awe-inspiring, and watching from the wide windows was a special treat. There was alcohol provided for the others, of course, but as a non-drinker himself he was content to pour cocoa and bake sugar cookies.
Doc could be found covered in flour, sleeves rolled up haphazardly and wearing a rather silly apron, but there was joy and laughter in baking. A line of unorthodox cookie cutters sat beside him---geometric shapes, hourglasses, fantastic creatures, and more.
It had been far too long since he'd been able to share these simple joys with others, he thought with a tiny smile.
Mistletoe
“So who wants to start this vacation off right?”
no subject
And this was precisely what he had in mind. Doc looked around at the group with an amused smile, lingering for a second more on Hermann and Gold to read the room. His attention turned to Newt, then, and with a shrug and a laugh, he stepped forward to give him a chaste, friendly peck.
"Merry Christmas, and welcome."
no subject
"We're grateful for the invitation. Newton and I don't tend to get out too much- and considerably less so in the past two weeks."
Not that being cooped up in the mountains would be all that much different from the isolation of their own home, really. But they'd have company this time at least.
no subject
"Now that's a merry Christmas," Newt said while Hermann thanked their hosts. He grinned cheekily, with all but an actual winkwinknudgenudge in Gold's direction. Was he treading a thin line? Probably, but when wasn't he? Besides, he thrived on attention and right now, he was going to milk it.
And speaking of...Hermann was feeling a little off, the waves of unease foreign in their Drift. Jealousy was not a common emotion for his husband. Newt could not even recall a single time he had been jealous regarding attention towards Newt outside of the professional sense.
"Oh, come here," he beckoned to Hermann, waving him closer, lest his own hot physicist be put out. "Show us how it's done."
no subject
You chose this. You invited him.
He rounded toward the kitchen and strode into it, deciding his time might be better spent checking to see whether the resort had stocked anything than standing there and simmering. The cabinets were empty of anything but a set of dishes (freshly cleaned, he found upon inspection), with some pots and pans in the lower cupboards. The refrigerator was likewise empty. On the very large kitchen island, however, stood a fruit basket with a sizable bottle of champagne, something they saw when they first came in, before mistletoe had been hung.

Doc smiled at the display between the eager husbands. They were sweet---and he was, indeed, quite glad to have them. There might have been a glimmer of amusement in his eye at their success. All according to plan. Now he just had his own partner to take care of.
He disappeared into the kitchen, frowned at the champagne bottle, and immediately pivoted to the tap for water. Up here it was sure to be fine. Once secured, he walked back to Gold's side, free hand brushing over his.
"Thank you. I...know this isn't exactly our usual holiday."
no subject
Gold just maintained inwardly that he picked this, so he could deal with what came of it. Already he was on his device, one-handed, making a quick list of things to pick up from the grocery down away from the resort.
His look when he lifted his gaze to Doc's said something else entirely, though. Largely he is going to test me and I am going to eventually get him.
"And this is only our second holiday. We'll see what turns out to be usual by the end of it."

"If either of you need anything from your residence, I can teleport objects- so long as it isn't liquid at any rate."
no subject
"I suppose we should discuss what we want to eat this week. Basic meals, perhaps one good dinner. Gold's the expert chef between us, but he's taught me well," Doc gushed, still turning thoughts over in his head.
"And I thought we could bake the traditional cookies at some point, if anyone would like to join in?"
no subject
"That won't be necessary," Gold answered Hermann, still jotting things into his device. "I intend to drive into town to avail myself of the local offerings, so if you have special requests, now is the time to voice them."
Though at Doc's mention of cookies, he is quick to take down some ingredients for that.
no subject
"I'm not making out with you in a doorway," he stipulated with a brief glance up to the mistletoe. But he did shuffle closer, and assured they didn't have an audience, brushed a thumb over Newton's lips before kissing him soft but sure. The arm curling around his husband's waist was just a touch possessive.
no subject
“You would,” he taunted with gentle kiss on the cheek, “and you know it.” With enough provocation, Hermann could be made to do much he otherwise claimed he wouldn’t. The same went for Newt. The childish competitiveness and aggressive, odd method of encouragement was a longstanding strength and weakness of their relationship.
He slipped Hermann’s hand from his waist and cradled it in his own, but instead of marching them straight to the kitchen, hand in hand, he asked, “Ready to be a little social?”
no subject
"I suppose. Try not to grate too much on Gold's nerves, however. We're going to be here for a bit and I'd rather you weren't transformed into your namesake again."
no subject
They entered the kitchen just as Newt was assuring him, "Anyway, I'm on my best behavior. You know that. Perfect angel." [x]
Kitchen - Cookie Shenanigans
A dinosaur-shaped cookie had been designated by Newt to be himself, along with an accompanying sound-effect of "Rawr" just to remind everyone that he was, in fact, scary and sexy and not to be trifled with. Dinosaur cookie was married to a Square, apparently, because it was square and that spoke to its perceived personality and mathematical inclinations. Also because he had accidentally broken the corner and Newt was sure the imperfection would piss Hermann off.
The Hourglass was Doc for reasons, of course, because how could it not be. And while mixing up some colorful icing and lamenting to himself that putting glitter on a cookie would, probably, make it inedible (somewhat appropriate given the subject, but whatever), Newt was currently debating between a Circle, onto the center of which he'd pressed a round mint candy, or a Sun shape for Gold.
"Man, I haven't made cookies since I was a kid."
no subject
Next, of course, came the decorative sugar and food dye. He rolled up some green and blue, then passed the bags to Newt.
"Some scales for your dinosaur, and---same here. My mother didn't really enjoy this, so it was only the once. I've been yearning to try again!"
the solstice birthday (December 21st)
"It entirely slipped my mind, but today is Gold's birthday. He certainly doesn't expect gifts from you, but I would like to at least prepare food and a cake. I'm sure I can manage given enough effort, but...I just thought I'd let you know what I'm up to today. It's probably a good day to explore on your own and enjoy the sights."
Re: the solstice birthday (December 21st)
Newt was no dummy, though, and could easily read between the lines. Seeing the sights on their own meant providing the birthday boy and his boyfriend some alone time. As much as he would like to pester Gold, he knew Hermann wouldn't let him.
He and Hermann could celebrate their Boston wedding early then, maybe go into town, get some coffee, go for a stroll.
"How long do we need to, uh, disappear for?"
no subject
"Hmm. I'd say...two hours should be more than sufficient. I don't want to put you out unnecessarily, and I know this is sudden."
no subject
He gave a shrug and looked to Hermann for a cue. If his husband was okay with two hours or so out and about, Newt would be. They were good at keeping each other occupied.
no subject
He would have preferred more notice, however. Perhaps that was the reason behind breakfast.
"I'm sure we can find something to do for awhile. We haven't explored much of the town yet, anyway. Is there anything you'd like us to pick up while we're out?"
