Shop till you drop

WHO: Violet Harmon and Light Yagami
WHERE: Heropa Shopping district
WHEN: Morning of 1st of July
WHAT: All the shopping!
WARNINGS: None, really.

[After a few weeks out of the slammer, things are starting to feel more normal for Violet. With her ability to have income back to normal, she's doing the one thing some teenage girls do - shop. But first, she's looking for one particular roommate in residence #21.]

Hey, Light. What do you feel about clothes shopping?

[Light's been a great support for her since the beginning and even more so during her brief incarceration. This is just one way of showing her appreciation, really]

[If Light has been a little distracted recently due to certain events, he's been trying his best to act normal. Even so, his gaze is a little more far-off, his focus running a little ragged, his eyes not quite as sharp, when he hears Violet's voice. He looks up from his book, seated at the living room couch, and:]

I - [He hadn't expected that sort of question out of the blue. He gives a congenial enough answer.] I suppose I like it well enough. [Liar. He likes it enough to keep presentable and fashionable, that's for certain.] Are you thinking of buying new clothes?

[Violet recognizes a distracted answer when she sees one. She leans against the back of the couch and beckons towards the door]

I am. And you look like you could use some fresh air. Come on.

[no arguments]

[He feels like protesting against that last remark, but he decides against it. He pauses, but -- well. Why not? Maybe fresh air and shopping, as frivolous as it sounded, would be what he needed to keep his mind focused on other things.

The book is set down on the coffee table and he stands, ready to follow her out.]

You just want me to come along so I can carry your bags.

[He can still manage to joke, at least.]

That's not true. I'll carry some of it myself.

[she grins and starts towards the front door, opening it and whirling around to bow Light through it]

After you.

[A small little laugh at the sight.]

Thanks.

[And he walks through, but will still wait for her. When she's closed the front door and caught up to him:]

Did you have a place in mind? Or items, for that matter?

I know a place. [she falls into step next to him, leading while making sure they can still hold a conversation. She's had Heropa scouted out for clothes within the first week. It takes a lot of work to maintain her own sense of style]

And I'm pretty sure they have stuff for boys too.

I hope so. I'm not exactly looking to buy a dress anytime soon.

[He follows, only a few steps behind her.]

It's a nice day today. If only ever day could be so calm here.

Don't jinx it. [she does look up at the sky though, marveling at its clear blue]

So what's been bugging you? Or do you prefer not talking about it?

[He frowns, but he keeps walking. Was it that obvious? He had been making attempts to seem normal, but perhaps there was only so much that even he could manage.

He's hesitant to tell her; he's almost ashamed to admit that his first impulse is to lie, to say "Nothing's bothering me". But it's Violet, one of the few people he feels comfortable sharing things with here, and so after a few moments more:]

There was an... incident the other day. At a coffee shop that I visit.

[they have been friends since the first day. Violet may not know much about Light but she considers him a close friend. At least he hasn't done anything that raises any red flags]

What happened?

[she decides to take the longer route to the store so it'll give them more time to chat privately.]

[What makes this difficult to explain is that he isn't sure if he should share names -- or rather, Edgeworth's name. He feels as if it isn't any business of his to go around telling others what the man's powers entail, even if it is Violet. Maybe she already knows, but if she doesn't, would that be a violation of trust on his part?

He decides to keep it generalized, at least for now. But it needs to be prefaced with something else first:]

Do you... remember when you commented that you were surprised that I like to play detective? Or something along those lines. When I brought you a few of my books when you were in jail?

[Violet has no idea about Edgeworth's power. She never even thought to ask. She's listening intently though, wondering where things are leading]

Yeah. I remember. Why?

I said that you'd be surprised how much experience I've had investigating in the past and, well, I wasn't exagerrating. [He shoves his hands in his pockets.] Back home, there's an ongoing investigation to catch a murderer; I'm a part of that investigation. I actually arrived in this world in the midst of it all, without any of it being resolved.

[He doesn't pause just yet to let her comment, he wants to get it all out at once before he changes his mind.]

Anyway, one of the detectives I was working with... It's a long and complicated story, but in the end, he began to suspect me of the crimes.

[she remains silent as she listens. Its quite an impressive story and it speaks a lot to Light's intelligence. She's pretty sure no police force would take on a college student without good reason.]

What happened then?

It was ridiculous, of course. I'm not a murderer, I'd never even think of committing crimes so reprehensible. But it was enough to make me doubt myself, make me think that maybe I was going crazy, that I didn't have control over my own actions and didn't remember --

[He pauses, frowning. An exhale that's nearly a sigh.]

Anyway, I offered to turn myself in just in case. They kept me locked up for awhile before evidence cropped up that convinced them to let me out, and they allowed me to work with them again. But the suspicion was still there.

Well I arrived here soon after that. I hadn't doubted myself again after that incident, and honestly, I felt foolish for doing so in the first place. But -- I guess you could say I've had that confidence shaken again recently.

[the first part Violet could sympathize with, especially with recent events that got her jailed. She starts to frown as she continues to listen to his explanation]

Shaken by what? Did someone say something to you?

[it's said in a manner that indicates she would stand up for him if necessary]

[He appreciates the sentiment, though unfortunately it isn't quite that simple.]

Not exactly. When I was getting coffee that one day, I ran into another imPort; it was an accident, and he didn't have... complete control of his powers, and he used them on me. The power was guilt manipulation and I felt--

[he frowns, remembering.]

Well, it wasn't pleasant. And it began to make me think: what was I feeling guilty for?

[that seems to be an unhealthy trend with people Violet's befriended]

You mean you don't know?

[that's very weird and the only other logical answer was that he has amnesia but it seems kinda crass to suggest that right now.]

I-

[He looks at her, uncertain.]

I can't think of anything that warranted that kind of guilt. Maybe it's nothing; maybe their powers induced guilt no matter what you did in the past, even if you were completely innocent of any crimes.

But I don't know. He didn't know either. Does that change your perception of me?

No. [it's said firmly. She has dated someone despite knowing about their murderous tendencies. It's not until she learned how deep that rabbit hole went that she broke up with him. It's going to take a lot more for her to change her impression of him]

There's nothing to change. It could just be little things that was amplified. You said that was the guy's power, right?

Yes. But he didn't know the details of it. So any possibility is as valid as the next.

[he sighs for real this time. There's relief in knowing that Violet won't think any differently of his person now.

(If only she knew how far down that rabbit hole actually did go.)]

I think the worst part is not knowing. And now he feels bad about it, and...

[he just trails off. He feels a little bad about that too.]

[It would be just like her to grow close to someone else with a dark past. She slows so she can walk next to him, watching his expression]

Don't over think it. It'll be okay. Even if it's not, you'll still be okay eventually.

[she's good at comforting]

If it's not okay, that means I've got a lot of reevaluating to do about who I am and what I stand for.

[He scoffs a little dryly.]

But maybe you're right. I've been overthinking it too much.

[He just wishes he could shrug it off, but after everything he's been through back at home, seeing how many people died, fighting off suspicion, wanting to prove himself capable of catching Kira... its easier said than done.]

Sorry. I don't mean to be a downer. I'll get over it soon, I'm sure.

[Violet doesn't really know what to say]

I hope so. Brooding's my thing. Not yours. [and she doesn't like to see him upset] Who's the other guy anyway?

[He hesitates.]

I don't know how comfortable he would be with me telling this story, so--

[He should tell Violet, he decides right then. He's already divulged this much, and it would be remiss not to, after she's already offered her own support.]

Don't tell him I told you, but it was Edgeworth.
