Keep us from saying anything

WHO: ImPorts!
WHERE: Heropa, Florida.
WHEN: September 13th, from 6 PM until 11 PM.
WHAT: Registration in motion... among other things.
WARNINGS: None anticipated; please let us know if this should be edited.

" The new frontier of which I speak is not a set of promises -- it is a set of challenges. It sums up not what I intend to offer the American people, but what I intend to ask of them. It appeals to their pride, not to their pocketbook -- it holds out the promise of more sacrifice instead of more security. But I tell you the new frontier is here, whether we seek it or not. "
( from jfk's speech "the new frontier," 7/15/1960. )

An autumnal festival might seem somewhat out of place in sweltering Florida heat, however those in attendance and have helped arrange the set-up of this Swear-In are getting into the swing of things. The atmosphere isn't overtly ecstatic or loud as previous Swear-Ins have been, and those paying close attention can get an underlying sense of tension coming from the Federal agents making their rounds as this event's security. Unlike the previous ceremonies -- and for such a smaller event -- there are more agents than what might be considered the norm.

There are a number of festivities to partake in, though; booths have been set up to host activities ranging from pig lifting (lift a boar over your head and you win it!), guessing how many eggs are in a large crate, wood chopping, pumpkin pie eating contests, horse shoe throwing and quite a few more... with a mysterious fascination with all things Pumpkin Spice. Other activities include "Spot the Communist", a small maze with cardboard cutouts of people where participants need to guess which one is the Communist and who's a patriotic American citizen. There are some pamphlets that can be found around the other booths entitled "COMMUNISM: What is it? And how can we stop it?" which could provide some hints on which cardboard cutouts are a dreadful Russian spy in disguise. (Hint: the girl with the molecular biology textbook is quite suspicious.)

The number of media representatives is a small group this time, their main focus on a specific booth with a platform and microphone. Every few minutes a local from the town steps forward, speaking into the microphone about their concerns about the ever present Red threat. Behind them a large poster is erected, practically looming over them foreboding as they talk openly about the possibility of nuclear disaster, losing their children, the American dream and everything else this country has ever provided for them. At one point, an angry local rushes the stage, snatching the microphone and gesturing to the imPorts among them in a furious motion.

"What we need is for imPorts to do their jobs! They have been so busy fighting with each other and causing trouble they've forgotten about us! I'll be damned before I see this country fall to stinkin' Commies because of these spoiled folk!"

There are, however, posters around representing imPorts fighting against the Red Threat surrounding the stage. They're different enough from the imPorts to lend the artists credible deniability, but included on the posters are the Green Glow, pictured without his symbol, ring, or mask (they've got the nose all wrong!), the Steel Saviour in red, white and blue, the Sherrif who has a bewildering goatee, Roaring Leopard in yellow and black, and something labeled merely as Armour Guy, inspired by a new spat of newcomers but with patches all over the armour in every shade they seemed to be able to think of.

Also available by the stage is a small podium with a government worker heading it, a sign above proclaiming: "DO YOU, IMPORT, WISH TO SPEAK OUT AGAINST THE RED THREAT? SIGN UP HERE! Once imPorts edge closer, they'll learn that they're seeking out anti-communist spokespeople to be featured in commercials, art, and more! In order to commemorate this, they will name a major highway after the imPort chosen. Sign up here!

Last, but not least, the government will have booths available for signing up for ASSIGNMENTS, though it's not necessary for imPorts to be present at the Swear-In to sign up later. Should they choose to sign up to provide local aid, they will receive a short debriefing, but those who sign up for occupation will get a small, sealed file to look at later... how curious!

[Josuke's presence at the Swear-Ins has been a mixed bag since he arrived in January, sometimes showing up to meet new arrivals and offer bits and pieces of advice or simply to stuff his face (and belly) full of food, and other times opting out of the experience altogether. It wasn't as though the ceremonies had an excellent track record, after all. So many of them had gone south...

But, while that had been a good reason to keep his distance for a while, it's precisely the reason he's making an appearance this time around. That is, in case something happens. The rough patch he'd been going through is behind him now, and he has no more doubts about whether or not he can do something to protect the people here that he cares about—or the civilians.

So far things have been uneventful, though. He's been able to relax, enjoy some games (what the hell's up with that Guess The Commie one, though???) and pig out (hahaha) on some pumpkin pie! Not a bad start.

Though things get a bit tense for a few minutes when that one local rushes the stage to start slinging accusations. That's about the time Josuke catches sight of Kaneda and wanders near, brows furrowed as he chews a bite of pie, a little whipped cream stuck to his upper lip.]

You listening to that guy? He's got no freaking clue what we're going through or how many of us are actually busting our asses for them.

[Even if they're not all jumping at the chance to sign up for military expeditions overseas.]

[Kaneda's sharing the same reaction as he listens to the obviously confused local, a brow raised as his chewing slows, almost daring the man to keep speaking words. But he's glad that someone else is agreeing with his silent opinion, slowly tilting his head towards him.]

They could start being grateful already. It's cause of us that this place is probably still standing, you know?

[Wait, he recognizes that voice.]

You're...

[God, he knows this, he KNOWS this.]

Josuke, right?

[Nailed it, Kaneda. And you can tell by the grin you'll get after Josuke finishes the bite of pie he's been chewing and gives his mouth a wipe.]

Yeah, how you been?

[Besides obviously disliking just as much as the rest of the imPort population these bullshit accusations about them not helping out enough. Sure, there was a lot of infighting going on, and yeah, a lot of them were pursuing their own goals in this world, but why the hell should being here mean they have to put their lives completely on hold? Wasn't it enough that they'd been brought here without asking, that they didn't have any say in being 'recruited' to fight some war not their own (despite what the government would have them believe) and that many of them were forced to put on the back burner really important things going on back home?

Josuke sure as shit thinks it's enough, thanks.]

Hopefully you're not letting schmucks like him get to you too much. Usually they're just full of hot air for...whatever reason. Still can't figure it out, myself! But I'm not itching to, either. There's a good number of people who'll say thanks.

Some of 'em even take it a bit further and dress up like us!

[He's still a bit freaked out by that though.]

[Oh good. That smile is soon matched by a toothy one from Kaneda himself, glad to hear he at least remembers some of his more Japanese brethren here.]

Well, I'm still put together, at least! Past couple of months things escalated juuuuust a bit, but...

[Despite the guy ranting and raving on the stage, he gestures to it.]

This is a nice change of pace. Peaceful, you know? And no glass sticking into my backside.

[August's swear-in had certainly been a trip, and it took a lot for him to come to this one. But with Tetsuo on the run and as loose of a cannon as he was, he couldn't expect him NOT to show up. He showed up to the Pines' birthday party, after all, and he was seen around Heropa more often than not. Sure, the excuse he'd give people was for the free food--anyone who knew Kaneda well enough knew his unending appetite. But he had his own agenda as of late.]

Hahaha! Yeah, guys like them can jump off a bridge. Hell, I'd probably wave to em!

...Dress up like us...

[As charming(?) as that is, that's a little...weird.]

[Josuke cringes and nods his head in understanding. He was there at August's Swear-In and remembers with crystal clarity all that glass and when it broke. How could he forget? He'd been standing on it at the time! And had fallen straight down into the fear-induced masses. Hadn't been very fun even if he'd done rather well in avoiding getting too badly banged up.]

Man, same here...been kinda rough lately, huh?

[But at least now things are beginning to look up again, even if it is impossible to say for how long. As far as Josuke is concerned, however, that's part of the point in being here: to be ready. Maybe Kaneda feels the same? Josuke doesn't know, but he has a feeling the other teen gets it one way or the other. He's hardly met an imPort who didn't get it, that need to be at least a little alert at all times, and to be prepared to protect those who matter most. Even in the midst of goofing off playing weird games, partaking in pie eating contests, and so on and so forth.

Speaking of pie, he grabs another mouthful before chuckling.]

You haven't heard of fanPORT? I didn't go this year, but I'm thinking I might next year. Some people got some really bizarre stuff there. There was fanart of us, even! Totally unreal.

[One in the same, Josuke, one in the same. Honestly, it was a sore spot (haha), especially when it had been an otherwise great night. Food, entertainment...and then massive chaos everywhere. But then again...that's what Crane was going for, wasn't it?

Absolute chaos.]

Tell me about it. I've got enough problems without Crane and assholes like that messing up my time.

[Makes you wonder why you even come to them after this. Even if it was to make sure that an incident like that didn't happen again. Re: Keeping an eye on certain people. He had a feeling Josuke understood that too. That rough understanding of responsibility for what you care about, and who you care about.

Another sandwich his shoved into his mouth, and albeit hard to talk with a full mouth, he manages.]

And they dress up as us? And draw us? Yeah, that definitely sounds bizarre enough to happen here....

[Actually that sounds fake but okay.]

[Yeah, Crane had gotten exactly what he wanted: absolute chaos, widespread panic, and unrestrained mayhem and murder. It really was a shame that the night had ended on such a note, but for every life that hadn't been lost and every person that he'd been able to heal afterwards, Josuke was grateful.]

Wish I could say you didn't have to expect shit like that around here, but I can't. There's always something happening. It's only once in a while that we get a break like this one.

Anyway, I'd take weird convention stuff over bombs and bullshit any day. Had way too much trouble with stuff like that back home to get stuck dealing with it here, too.

[Not that Josuke would run from said trouble, because things are exactly as Kaneda suspects; Josuke understands his responsibilities very, very well, and there simply isn't anything on Earth (this one or any other) that could keep him from trying to help a friend in need—or even an innocent bystander if he could.]

What d'you mean by problems, though? Got yourself in a bind already?
