[open] ain't no party like a normandy party
WHO: The Normandy Crew + YOU!
WHERE: Some restaurant + bar in Heropa. Underage characters can totes get in!
WHEN: Evening of April 11th
WHAT: It's Commander Shepard's "surprise" birthday party!
WARNINGS: Excessive Fun?!?!
[ It's a mild, warm evening in Heropa, and although parts of the city are still recovering from the Hornet attack in February, many parts of it are bouncing back, and many local businesses are even celebrating as such, especially on a Saturday night like this.
It just so happens that one such mega-hip establishment has a particularly festive mood to it, tonight--the presence of balloons by the entrance (some of which say "Happy Birthday!" on them) might say as much. Inside, there are more balloons around one section of the joint, decorating both part of the bar and some of the tables and chairs. The place feels quite open, and they've opened up some areas to create an open-air feeling in addition to having an actual outdoor patio area. The general vibe is laid-back but energetic, the crowd a mix of regulars having dinner, people looking for an early start to getting down for the night, and people who are apparently gathering for some sort of party.
Usually, there's a live band that plays regularly at this place, but tonight? The jukebox is playing almost exclusively a selection of 90's music. For those who find themselves unable to take this music and would like to take matters into their own two hands and vocal chords, there's a karaoke machine in one corner of the restaurant, on a platform where the band would usually be playing.
For those who might get hungry, the restaurant's menu is comprised of typical bar/restaurant food. Those looking for something light might look at the appetizers like nachos, sliders, or mozzarella sticks, but those who are looking for real dinner might order a burger, pizza, or pasta. And for those who are looking to get their drink on, there's a fully-stocked bar, of course.
Also, there's a miniature model of this ship floating around, as if by magic.
So? How about it? It's Saturday night! ]
( ooc: this is an open mingle log for Commander Shepard's ~*surprise birthday party*~! if you're a friend of Shep, Kaidan, or Kasumi's, feel free to assume that you've been personally invited--otherwise, it's totally cool to have your character randomly wander in and meet people! top-level! tag around! MINGLE! PARTY! also, it's not really a surprise because Kaidan sucks at keeping secrets and let it slip to Shep. also, it's being held in a restaurant (and bar) so underage characters are more htan welcome to crash c: )

[Jacob has dressed up a little for the Commander's big day- nice white button-up shirt, neatly-creased dark slacks- though his overall appearance still says that he's laid back and relaxing tonight.
He's not taking it easy on the food and drink, though. Biotics love parties, and Jacob's no exception. He's already polished off a plate of sliders and is thinking really hard about pizza while getting started on his second Jack and Coke. He'll make up for it with a few extra push-ups in the morning. For tonight, he's going to have some fun.]
[B] - The Good Ship
[Jacob's not sure how a perfectly-detailed miniature model of the Normandy came to be flying around this establishment, but he loves it. He's just leaning against a wall right now, admiring how much the little ship moves like the real deal as it does circles around the party.]
It's good to see the old girl again, even if it is bite-sized. Who came up with this, anyway?

[ In all honesty the Justicar only came because Kasumi had asked and she would not have felt right not attending. It was impossible not to notice how much she stuck out, but if there was one thing to say about Samara it was that she never really cared about sticking out. For most of the gathering, Samara could be found in the open areas carefully positioned away from people. Almost like she was avoiding direct mingling.
It isn't really an almost, she's being fairly deliberate in how much she's avoiding going near any groups or familiar faces. Perhaps it would be enough that she came. At least that's what she tried to tell herself as she watched others mingle. A small smile did form on her face as she saw people laughing among each other. At least there was that to be seen. It was a minor relief to see people actually allowing themselves some enjoyment. Too bad she wasn't following example. ]
[ B ] A JUSTICAR HAS TO DRINK
[ Eventually she does actually walk over to get something to drink. Even a Justicar has to get something after all. There are quite a lot of choices to be found when he comes to type of drink though and so Samara actually finds herself just studying the menu and all it had to offer. Did she actually want to attempt something new or did she simply want to get water?
This was a much more difficult decision than anyone should ever have it be. Maybe someone would come and give her a suggestion someday. ]
b!
This is hilarious.
He saunters over to her, giving her a grin that's pure 'I'm gonna tease the hell out of you.' ] Well, this is something unexpected! Looking for suggestions?

It's not until a little while later, though, that the thief follows suit, her New York Cocktail in one hand and a glass of red wine in the other--for Samara. Though, it had taken her some internal deliberation on what kind of drink to get the Justicar. Are Justicars even allowed to drink? had been a thought, at one point, but she figures that if Samara turns down the drink, well, Kasumi's sure she can pawn it off to someone else. Or she can take care of it herself.
She quietly makes her way over to where Samara is, a small smile on her face. ]

[ At some point during the night, Kaidan's hanging outside, nothing personal to everyone, but a lot of light, noise, and drinks is just enough to exacerbate a headache. It's not that he doesn't want to hang out, but... well, sometimes a little quiet is nice too. Besides, it's in a nice area, and he can stand out on the back porch and drink his beer and still hear things going on inside. It's nice, to actually see everyone, have the entire crew -- and friends, he has to mentally add -- together. Kind of feels more like what he saw when he'd just stepped onto the Normandy the second time.
He sighed, and turned, leaned against the railing, and and kept drinking his whiskey. Which was just fine, up until the moment he dropped it, and groaned, turning to go in and pay for the glass, and another drink.
But he wasn't drunk. Just. Occasionally clumsy. ]
[B. INSIDE ]
[ Inside was another story. That's where the actual party was, after all, and he was happy to participate, although if his eyes constantly wandered back to the birthday boy -- well, that was probably to be expected, all things considered. He mostly gravitated toward the food, though, and actually? They had some pretty decent fare, considering it was a bar --
And Kaidan loved food, anyway. Well, food and booze, and it was pretty rare to find him without food in his mouth. In fact, approaching him normally resulted in his first words being a "-- mm, what?" after he finally swallowed.
At least he wasn't spilling drinks over the first person that came by, although he was definitely getting there by about the seventh, losing a little bit more of his coordination, but at least that was short lived.
Thank god for biotics. ]

[ Just do w/e and I'll roll with it. ]

After all, it was almost offensive how obvious Shepard's un-surprise was. If Kasumi were capable of feeling embarrassment, like, ever, she would have felt it at the moment the two men walked in and Shepard had shown his poorest attempt at "surprise." ]
Did you happen to forget that this was supposed to be a surprise, Major?

OPEN
[ It's supposed to be a surprise. That had been emphasized several times over since Kaidan had accidentally let slip that certain individuals might be looking to do something for Shepard's birthday. While Shepard doesn't see the need for all the fuss, and doesn't mind surprises that don't involve doors being broken down and guns blazing (unless he's doing it) asking him to act surprised when he has forewarning is a bit of a tall order.
When he walks into the bar in front of Kaidan, the expression of surprise on his face isn't entirely that convincing -- though he is genuinely surprised at how many people are here at all. Arms crossed, he grins at the sight of the balloons and familiar faces, feigning ignorance. ]
I thought we were just having dinner out. What's the occasion.
b. mingling
[ As the birthday celebrant, if only an ostensibly unwitting one, Shepard's making the rounds to thank attendees for showing up -- though he's perpetually distracted by the food, being a biotic with all the healthy appetite of one.
When he's left to his own devices, he can typically be seen scanning the crowd contemplatively ... or chasing after the model ship, trying to figure out how it works. ]
c. patio
[ When the crowd gets too much, however well-meaning it may be, Shepard finally escapes to the outdoors, though there isn't much relief here -- he's not the only person outdoors, but at least there's open air above him. He's lost in quiet contemplation of the stars -- or as much of them as he can see with the glare of city lights, nursing a glass of whiskey. ]

Party Crasher #12 OTA
So, of course he's coming right in. The place is very visibly divided between patrons and party guests up by the bar. With the confidence of a true asshole, he follow towards them. And thank God he actually dressed nice today. Blue button down shirt and suspenders over a dark jacket. It totally works for a birthday. One of the servers gives him a look when he approaches the very obvious MUST BE 21 OR OVER sign, but Bucky simply gives her one back and defuses that situation before it even starts. Damn does he love super powers!
A NORMANDY
[ There's an undignified squawk coming out of Bucky when he sees something drift into his peripheral vision. He can't make heads or tails out of it when it finally comes into full view. It's nothing like the quinjet the Invaders use for air transportation, but what else can it be? Whatever it is, plane or otherwise, it's a slick piece of work, even for a toy.
When Bucky lifts his hand to touch it, it sort of repels a little higher out of reach. That makes him laugh, charmed by the entire thing. Is magic keeping it up? Is it being piloted somehow, small as it is? He sees the name on it, Normandy, and his smile sobers up some, but not the wonder. ]
Weird...
B CAKE
[ Okay, to be fair, it's already been carved up, so he doesn't feel bad about cutting off a piece, too. Besides, it's not like this is a wedding or anything! He's not committing some sacrilegious faux pas by getting what's his all by himself. It's thick and chocolatey and everything a birthday cake should be! Yeah, Buck's not disappointed. Good job, guys! Good effort.
Tongue sticking out to improve his concentration (obviously), Bucky starts cutting himself another piece on a garishly red plastic plate set beside the cake. Don't mind him! He totally knows what he's doing. ]
C SHOTS SHOTS SHOTS
[ With a brilliant (slightly cheeky) smile, he orders himself an Old Fashioned. The bartender asks him how old he is and, with a completely straight face, Bucky tells him he's twenty-three. If he bats his eyes to make his point, well, it's all in the power of his Puppy Face. The guy buys it and soon enough he's got his whiskey to enjoy this birthday party properly.
There's singing and he is more than happy to join in to celebrate this guy's--Shepard?--birthday. And once that's over, well, he's heading over for the food, grabbing a few chips with runny cheese on them. It, uh, doesn't exactly go with his drink, but whatever. Free's free. ]
A
[ He asked, leaning against a wall, glass of whiskey in hand, and looking up to it. He still thought it was a pretty neat sight. Not a drone, but it acted enough like one that he was tempted to see if they could keep it for later -- although he suspected that wasn't going to be much of a problem. He figured the birthday boy would like it. ]
It's a replica, but obviously...the real one is a lot bigger.

OTA
[ Although it would have been easy to show up in her tactical suit, which is what most people would recognize her in, tonight she opts for something different. She retains the deep hood that overshadows most of her face; there's a reputation to keep up and an air of mystery around herself that she honestly just has fun with, after all.
Having helped organize this whole thing, she sort of hangs back by sitting at the bar with her back leaning against the counter for the most part, keeping an eye out in case things go awry (as most things involving the Normandy crew tend to do) and nursing a rather colorful blue drink complete with straw and little paper umbrella as she does so. She might mingle later on, she thinks, but for now she's rather content with people-watching, which is one of her favorite things to do, anyway.
She won't turn down company, in any case. ]
B • Outside, later in the evening
[ With the sun having set for the night and the air cooling down, and given that she continues to wear something like a coat with the hood up in the humidity of Florida weather, she decides to step out onto the patio. There happens to be a small fountain there, the water almost glowing from the lights at the bottom of the basin, and she chooses the edge of it as her sitting spot, setting her current drink down beside her.
Her need to cool down may also partly be due to the couple of drinks she's had. But that's not readily apparent--not yet, anyway.
Although the music inside isn't particularly loud, the sounds still drift across to the outdoor area from how open the place is, and she begins to tap her foot along to beat of the song that's playing. By this point in the night, the restaurant's playlist is already on its second run through and she recognizes this song from the first time, finds herself even humming quietly along. ]
C • Choose your own adventure.
B aww yiss awkward kid coming your way
The first time he spots her, he can't look away, and that's really his own personal problem. She's Japanese and Buck suddenly needs to know where she is at all times. But that irrational impulse goes away soon enough; she's one of the people supposed to be here, judging with the way she mingles. The hood makes it hard to see her face, but every once in awhile she tips back and damn is she a looker. Now he's got a whole different reason to watch her come and go. So how can he stop himself when he downs what's left of his short glass and follows after her? ]
Hey. [ It's a little awkward, but he brightens his smile. ] You wanna dance?

[ So Charlie loves parties. A lot. They're like his favorite thing. Also, a certain thief has sort of appointed herself Charlie's personal fashion consultant, and so the wizard is wearing one of the outfits she picked out for him. (He likes it though, all the blue brings out his eyes, compliments the color of his magic.)
It is a little strange though, since he's only met like... two of Kasumi's friends. He realizes pretty quickly that they're all like insanely tall space soldiers- okay, maybe not insanely tall, but when you're only five-foot-six, they all seem that way. Still, Charlie is hardly awkward in social situations where he doesn't know anyone. He's quick to say hello and offer a charming smile, even to a complete stranger. ]
[ B | BABBY NORMANDY ]
[ The fact that the model spaceship is flying is Charlie's handiwork, and for the most part the little ship navigates the crowd pretty easily. Charlie witnesses one or two close calls and decides that the enchantment needs a little tweaking to better suit the venue.
He waves the little toy over, taking it in hand, and another wave of his hand causes a complex array of interwoven runic characters to unfold from the ship like a flower. They illuminate his face with ice blue light as he examines them. He makes a few adjustments with his free hand, the same blue light flowing from his fingertips.
Once he's satisfied, he gives another motion of his hand and the runes fold back away, vanishing completely. He lets go of the ship and it flies off once again, hopefully less likely to bump into people now. ]
[ C | WILDCARD ]
[ Make something up! ]
B
So when he lets the little Normandy flies off again, Kasumi's there, at the ready, with her cocktail in one hand and another of the same thing in the other, holding it out to Charlie. ]

[It feels a little weird being at what Jaime understands to be an adult party, and though he's tempted just to catch Shepard the next day to give him a present, he has a steady enough diet of guilt that he manages to coerce himself into going. Shepard attended a teen birthday party for him, so the least he can do is return to the favour!
He looks a little uncomfortable, a little out of place - and yes, he's holding a glass of coke because even if he could try to con the bartender, he's far too responsible to do so - but his general impression is a friendly one. If approached, he's quick with a smile. He might even glance towards the ship and comment,] I have no idea how that thing's working.
[b ; food]
[When Jaime had ordered a pizza, he hadn't been expecting an entire pizza. Personal sized, maybe? Either way, he's stuck with more food than even a teenaged metabolism can stomach. He's not exactly a biotic.
...well, hey, maybe some people here are. If anyone looks tragically bereft of food, he gestures to the pizza and says,] Hey, you want a slice?
A
Magic. I'm not even kidding. It's literally magic.

He'll listen to the music, order some food and mingle around a bit. Come say hi, ask who this other blonde attached to him is?]

At some point in all the mingling, she winds up beside them, and decides to strike up a conversation. God knows she shouldn't be mingling this much, but hey. ]

I DON'T EVEN GO HERE (OTA)
That said, she's still in the exploration phase and hardly cares that it's getting toward nighttime. She's dressed a little more appropriately than before--jeans and a plain black t-shirt--and has a few dollars to her name (or lack thereof) earned from panhandling. She still doesn't understand the coin here, doesn't know how much the crushed wad of paper in her pocket will buy, but maybe it's enough to get something small to eat.
There's a party inside, clearly enough. "Happy Birthday." They're celebrating a birth? With... strange floating things on strings.
Hello, small child is momentarily enraptured by her first sighting of a balloon. ]

OTA!
[It's been a long few months. With the clean up from the Hornet attacks, and his fight with Kimblee, Roy is glad to finally have something else to occupy his mind. Like celebrating someone's birthday! And what better way to celebrate somebody's birthday with some drinks?
Roy's nursing his second glass of much needed whiskey as he sits at one of the tables. He had gotten to know Commander Shepard and most of the other members of his crew during their mission in Alaska, but it was nice to see them all in a different light.
He takes another, slightly longer, sip from his drink. He can already feel the effects of the alcohol, but it hardly deters him. Who knows what might happen as the night goes on?]
B. Food
[Bar food is not really his type of food, but it's hard to ignore the munchies. So, Roy hovers over the table, empty plate in hand, trying to decide what exactly he should take. There are too many options for him to decide! Someone help!]
C. Outside
[Maybe a little more inebriated than he ought to be, Roy makes his way outside to get some cool, fresh air. It's a nice change, and the breeze is just enough to help him catch his breath. He sits in a chair, and just listens to the muffled sounds of the party behind him.]
D. Free space!
[Drunken shenanigans? Horrible dancing? Push up contest? Do whatever you want, and I'll follow.]
B
She approaches the table and grabs an empty plate for herself, and stops when she spots a man who appears to be deliberating over what to get. Why not help? ]
The sliders are very, very good. You should try some if you haven't already.

OTA
[Winry is wearing a lavender dress to the party, and currently has a drink in her hand - non-alcoholic. She's fascinated by that little floating ship, and nods at it.]
Isn't that great?
B: Outside
[She's stepped outside to get out of the noise. She still has her drink, still non-alcoholic. The music is softer out here, as well as the noise. And she's looking up toward the stars.]
C: Food
[She's eyeing the cake. It looks delicious, but she isn't sure if the birthday guy has had a piece yet. So she'll take a slice of pizza and one of those sliders. If she can't eat them, she'll give them to Ed. She knows he'll eat it. Seeing you approach, she smiles.]
Have you tried one of these?
A
In any case, she approaches Winry with a drink of her own in hand--hers is alcoholic--and joins her in admiring the little flying ship. ]
It is, isn't it? Makes me feel really nostalgic.
I'm Kasumi, by the way. Friend of the birthday boy's. I just met Ed a little while ago, but I saw you two walk in. Cute couple.

[Like an entire pizza and a couple pitchers of beer too much food.]
[But the other seats are open, and so is his expression. As much as the Iron Bull enjoys food and alcohol, he is definitely available for harassment, or other kinds of interaction. Maybe even waving at a few people...]
[After all. Kasumi promised Shepard would be here. More than a chance to check out that ass for himself.]
[Without making an ass of himself.]
[Hahaha, he's hilarious.]
no subject
Not Bull, though. Not at all. He enjoyed the man's company, too, and nodded when he passed by.]
I didn't expect you to be here, Iron Bull. It's good to see you.
