HEROPA - YOUTH CENTER

[As soon as the kids' painting class lets out, Jesse hops outside for a cigarette. It's more out of habit than need, these days. Nicotine does nothing for him. Nothing does anything for him. But he likes it: the smoke in his lungs combined with the sweet summer air around him, salt on the breeze and the sun on his skin. He keeps away from the building's entrance - doesn't want to make the children breathe second-hand smoke, of course - and wanders the grounds instead. It's a good chance to survey the area for any creeps lurking around, too. The place doesn't have much in the way of security, and if there's one "heroic" job he's willing to do, it's protecting these kids.]

MAURTIA FALLS - RED BRANCH

[It's funny. He's been living in Pennsylvania for over a month, but he couldn't be assed to explore the place very much. Honestly, he doesn't like Pennsylvania. There's not nearly as much sun as he's used to and it just isn't his scene. Downright gloomy, sometimes. But he's slowly getting used to it, and his leisurely exploration finally leads him to the imPort pub on the outskirts of town. It's cool-looking, at least. Not a place to hang out on the regular, but definitely a place to look at. He snaps a few photos as he hops up the steps, and does the same when he walks in. That's going on his instagram, for sure.]

HEROPA - THE STREETS

[It's about time for dinner. Jesse never cooks for himself - he doesn't need to save the money and it's lonely as hell eating in his apartment by himself - so he heads straight from work into town to scope out the options. Sometimes he'll choose pizza. Sometimes tacos or a burger. Sometimes he just grabs ice cream, because he's a responsible adult. Anyway, he parks his stupid banana-yellow convertible off the street and hops out to look around. There's probably someplace he hasn't tried yet. He'll just walk until he finds a good one.]

MAURTIA FALLS #001 - CLOSED TO GREED

[It's the worst time of night, when Jesse has to come back to this place. Half the time, he doesn't even bother. It's often hotels for him, wherever he happened to just be partying. But since he couldn't land a girl for tonight, Jesse comes shuffling into his government-sponsored apartment as soon as the bars close. He smells strongly of liquor but he isn't remotely drunk, which is his curse, really. No one should have to be this sober. He tosses his jacket over the nearest chair and opens the fridge to grab a beer, not quite ready to sleep yet. He rummages around for some leftovers, too, but they're all gone. That's great. The roommate probably ate them again. He heaves a mildly irritated sigh and wanders out of the kitchen, chugging his beer.]

AT THE DRIVE-IN - CLOSED TO SKYE

[Okay... So he was honestly only half-paying attention to the movie, if that. He's been mostly focused on Skye, because he's a teenage boy at heart, and who really goes to a drive-in to watch the movie? But now the credits are rolling and the engines of the cars around them are starting up. Jesse sits back and looks up at the starry sky over their heads, letting out a quiet laugh.]

Over already, huh.

I'm starting to prefer it that way too. [she glances down at her wrist, looking at the word 'registered' printed there]

[His wrist still reads the same.]

It's bullshit, right? Not that I'm planning to start a whole war against those guys. It's just better if they keep outta my business and I keep outta theirs.

Yeah. I'm not even going to their swear in ceremonies anymore. Not since the train explosion and the shark attacks. The network keeps me updated anyway.

[and tells her just how much of a good idea it is to avoid the government]

Oh yeah, hell no. I stopped going to those a while ago, so I missed all that shit. Yo, how much dumber could they get? Seriously? Herding us all in one place like that, buncha sitting ducks.

I was so stupid. I actually thought they'd be safe. [she stuffs her hand into a pocket to take out a cigarette and a lighter]

Not letting that catch me off guard again.

[If she's smoking, then he's smoking. He pulls out his own and lights up.]

Don't be hard on yourself. You'd think they woulda at least tried to get some security set up or some shit.

[this is why he has cool adult points. She lights up and takes a puff before she continues]

We are the security. Think they forgot some of us have no ability to fight back.

That's just it, though! Half of us either got useless powers or no training. You can't just throw us in there and expect us to know what to do when shit goes down.

Don't think they care. [she takes a look at the bar they're standing outside of. She doesn't think Greed would mind if she stopped by the competitor's place for a while]

I'm thinking about learning how to fight though. There's been too many incidents lately.

[At that, Jesse gives a fervent shake of his head.]

You don't wanna learn how to fight. You wanna learn how to survive. That means learning three things: playing dead, running away, or making yourself too valuable to kill.

What if that isn't enough?

[she scowls] I know how to survive but I can do more than that.

What's "more than that", anyway? Don't tell me you wanna actually wanna get tied up in World War Three with these guys.

[she worries her lower lip for a moment then takes another drag]

No. Not really.

[but she feels helpless and she doesn't like that]

So don't worry about fighting. You don't come out on top by fighting. It's this right here.

[He taps at his temple. Good old-fashioned brains.]

[she huffs]

Yeah. Guess I've been talking to too many hero-types.

It's nice and all, them trying to help people. But nobody can really do that when you stick to the rules as much as they do. Going at the bad guy head-on? It just ain't smart.

Yeah. Sometimes it feels like we're living in a world straight out of a comic book.

Pretty much. And the heroes in comic books? Their lives suck.

[she scoffs] That explains so much.

Just remember what I said about running. No shame in being a pussy if you're the last one breathing.

I have no issues with running. [she just... sometimes forget to do that in favor of watching a horror unfold]

Are you gonna go in or what? [she nods towards the bar]

[He shrugs and tosses what's left of his cigarette.]

You having a drink with me?

Yep.

[unless the place kicks her out]

Hold on, hold on. Lemme see your I.D.

[He assumes she has a fake one. He just wants to see the quality of it.]

I don't have one.

[she has maybe just been hanging around adults who'll let her drink underage]
