There's this electric feeling I take home
WHO: Jim and Spock
WHERE: Their apartment in De Chima
WHEN: After Jim comes back from his little trip home
WHAT: Things get rather awkward when seemingly 5 years pass between when Jim was last here, as well as what happens now that he and Spock have been separated, telepathically
WARNINGS: None atm!
It's nothing short of absolutely bizarre.
Jim had lived his life for five years and never remembered this place. Become a Captain, exposed a conspiracy within Starfleet, died, gone on part of his five year voyage, crashed the Enterprise, helped save a starbase, and earned then declined a Vice Admiralship...
And so it was a different man that stepped into the apartment, the one that seemed like a distant memory. But the apartment didn't look like it had been sitting long. Not a speck of dust anywhere. The air temperature still neutral--the climate control is still on.
Of course, as he goes about looking around and getting re-acquainted with the place, he peeks into the different rooms towards the back of the apartment. One room very spartan, with only a few candles, a meditation mat, and a few artifacts. The next room, a large, single bed. And the last, a room with paperbacks on a shelf, some other knick-knacks and a wooden 3D chess set. And then, all at once it hits him.
They're hazy memories but they're definitely there. This is his shared apartment with Spock.
He and Spock had been together. And not just together but telepathically bonded.
This suddenly puts a whole new spin on how in-sync they've become over the past few years. Jim is standing in the doorway of their (shared?!) bedroom, as pieces slide into place.

He'll worry about that later, during tonight's meditation session no doubt. For now, he traces his old route in De Chima back to the lodgings that he and Jim shared—
... Oh. Right. There was that aspect too that was completely forgotten. It did explain a great deal of their growing relationship aboard the Enterprise; the ease of their conversations, the confidence in knowing what the other is doing or thinking.
But the other aspect of all that ... well. That is more awkward to think about given his long-time relationship with Uhura back in their reality. This will be ... interesting.
By the time he walks into their shared lodgings (oh god, they did share an apartment), Spock's mind is a great deal calmer than from the initial flurry of thoughts he had when he arrived. ]

Turning away from the bedroom, Jim knows who's in the common area waiting.
He's conflicted now. At that time, he and Spock had been having an easygoing conversation, very comfortable with each other after a lot of time together. But then there's a nagging in the back of his mind. How much of that was because they had once been bonded and how much because they had a hard-fought relationship they developed together?
Jim stops as soon as he can see Spock in full from across the room.
Oh hell.]
Hey.
[And there's his usual easygoing smile, he doesn't have to be awkward. Even though the situation itself is very much so.]
no subject
He meets Jim's eyes when he re-enters the living room, attempting to judge if Jim was in the same situation as he was. The familiar clothes told him as much too, but it never hurt to confirm. ]
Jim, [ he offers a small nod of greeting. ] I presume you are also experiencing a peculiar sense of confusion at having arrived here again when we had no recollection of being here before?
no subject
More or less.
[Shit, that was another thing. Spock and Uhura. Despite their brief fallout recently, it seemed like they were definitely back together at the party.
Though there was something to their relationship that was special--something more that they had together than say, Jim and Bones. Like they were two halves to a whole unit. He's not sure now if the memories of the last five years were now tainted by remembering their time here, or what, but he's just now recognizing it as true compatibility. Like they had been bonded all this time.]
You don't remember anything either? What happened to that eidetic memory?
[It's a bit of a lame joke, but anything to break the tension (unsure if he's the only one that feels it).]
no subject
Though the amused look falls back into his characteristic Vulcan-blank expression with a touch of a frown. ]
I also wish that question answered. I recalled nothing of this place while in our own reality, yet now I recall it with perfect clarity. A similar occurrence happened here previously as well.
no subject
He appreciates how now at least, Spock is more comfortable showing how amused he is, even if it is briefly. When last they were here...they hadn't fallen as much into step with each other as they are now.]
Did i--? Oh. Right.
[That Time They Don't Speak Of. He had completely forgotten that he learned he was going to die and be regenerated. Of course, now he remembers.]
Doesn't look like we've been gone long.
[And in an effort to be less awkward, Jim moves out from the back room area to sit on the couch near Spock.]
no subject
[ Y'know, the small things. ]
no subject
[There's a wry smile as he looks up at Spock from his seat.]
Last time we were here it was mostly linear. Might be a safe bet.
[He looks around the apartment.]
Only 24 hours huh? Been five years in our reality.
no subject
[ But Spock steps forward, moving deeper into the living room. He doesn't sit, but he stands near Jim, echoing their common positions on the bridge of the Enterprise. ]
Indeed. I believe much has changed for us in our own reality during that time.
no subject
But then a memory flashes across his mind, the two of them tangled up in the bedsheets of the bed just 15-20 feet away from where he sat. Jim can't bring himself to look into Spock's eyes right now. He sits on the edge of the couch, hands folded between his knees, voice soft.]
Yeah...yeah it really has.
no subject
... Jim?
no subject
No reason to pretend he can't anyway. Jim looks back up at Spock, small smile on his lips.]
Weird, how this alternate universe thing works, huh? 24 hours here, 5 years over there.
[And it's around now that he remembers that connection to Spock, the one that sat in the back of his mind, comforting. And now he's thinking about all of the time since then he's spent alone in his head. It feels lonely, now that he remembers what it was like.]
no subject
[ That's the biggest subtle hint that Spock can drop without naming it directly that he knows something is bothering Jim. ]
no subject
Listen, this is just...a lot. You know? To be hit with all this [He gestures around their previously shared living space] after 5 years with no memory.
no subject
[ Then there's a brief pause, Spock shifting his weight but hiding it by turning the movement into facing Jim more directly. ]
Shall I arrange other lodgings for the foreseeable future?
no subject
[It's a big deal. Not because of how much space they have. Hell, their quarters put together probably aren't as big as this apartment. It was more of what the apartment itself represents: their shared life and their Bond 5 years ago.
He looks up at Spock, now able to hold his gaze.]
...Unless it's a big deal for you.
no subject
It is not. Though are you certain you do not prefer to utilize the bed?
no subject
Jim is leaning back, trying to look (and partially succeeding--Spock is probably the only person that would know otherwise) casual.]
Yeah, I'm sure. This is fine.
no subject
[ Spock glances at the items in their common room, his impeccable Vulcan sense of time thrown off by being in a different dimension and now he has to look at a clock to tell the time. ]
While it is only early evening here, do you wish to retire for the evening to rest?
no subject
[He stands up, thumb over his shoulder pointing towards the door.]
I was gonna head out and re-acquaint myself with the area.
no subject
Jim, I believe there is a matter that should be discussed.
no subject
We're doing this now, huh?
[He turns back around to face Spock.]
I'm not sure what there is to discuss. We were together here, we went back, you're in a long-term relationship with Uhura and we're back here again. That's the long and short of it.
no subject
no subject
...What about it?
no subject
May I inquire of your thoughts on it?
no subject
[What does Spock want him to say?]
I didn't think there was a way to break one but I guess we found out the answer to that.
[He is noting the other's body language, though not commenting on it yet.
Talking about this out loud was bringing back a lot of the memories and emotions tied into the bond that hadn't been immediately apparent at first--like he was seeing his memories through a thick fog. Bits and pieces of them became more apparent when he thought closely about them.]
no subject
[ Spock hesitates again, his tone pausing. ]
I trust ... that the existence of it will not impact our current ... relationship.
no subject
He folds his arms across his chest.]
I don't want it to but...do we pretend like it never happened?
[His friendship with Spock is one of his most prized possessions--it was hard-fought-for and a true mutual respect. Spock is someone he trusts to have his back and would do anything for. He can't let this affect them. They've come too far.]
no subject
no subject
Good, because I don't think I could for that long.
I don't have a good answer for what to do about this, but I know I can't just ignore it.
no subject
Do you wish to ... reform the bond?
no subject
I can't just ask you to do that. Not when you and Uhura...
[Right so they'd had a hiccup in their relationship but still. 5 years is a long time.]
Why, do you?
no subject
Knowing that some memories of this place may yet remain dim or unremembered, do you recall that we once spoke of our relationship as it regarded my relationship with Nyota? Your discovery of her importance to me caused ... a degree of tension between us. The telepathic conversation we held after to come to an understanding is the discussion I am referring.
no subject
...Vaguely.
[He remembers the gist of it, and at least remembers that they hadn't called it quits after the conversation.]
But Spock, that was 5 years ago. I didn't even know you two were a thing. You've been a thing for practically 5 years now at this point. It's a different situation.
no subject
It is indeed different; our relationship has evolved along an entirely different path than the one that had begun here, and has had considerable time to evolve in our reality than the months that were allowed here.
no subject
I don't know what to do with this.
[A hand runs through his hair. What did he even want? It's like two competing memories: Spock, his bondmate, and Spock, his best friend.
They seemed irreconcilable at this point. But could they be reconciled? Did he want them to be?]
no subject
no subject
It's a start, and it's a way to acknowledge what happened between them without it being the foremost thing on their minds. At the same time it allows them to continue as they were on Enterprise.
Most importantly though, it's not a definite "cannot happen".]
Yeah...yeah. I guess we just. See what happens.
no subject
Precisely.
no subject
[This last bit said with almost the same tone he says this with when asking Spock for further data on his reports.
Although there's a temporary plan in place, it does little to ease the turmoil in both his head and chest and gut.]
no subject
[ It doesn't do much to settle Spock's mind either; he hopes his meditations that night would provide him a better sense of calm. ]
no subject
Okay I'm heading out then. I'll see you later.
[Jim's own form of meditation--drinking to make the complexities seem less...well, complex, entangled. That and to help him temporarily forget some of the things that keep popping up in his head from when they were last here.]
