History, Science, and Math. Oh my!
Any city

Transferring to Nonah Middle had been suspiciously easy, even with all those who had said it would be such when he had asked, yet it still fired off every instinct he had to wonder when the price had to be paid for such. He had never transferred schools himself, but as a second year he had started to research and prep for the move to High School and what he had learned showed just how complex the process could be just on that scale and with an actual guardian. Even taking into account cultural differences between Japan and the United States, the process should not have been as easy as filling out a few sheets of paper and that was it.

He had no tangible records, not even a birth certificate to prove his age, let alone test scores or report cards to show he was mentally capable of being placed into the eighth grade. Yet they had allowed it all because of his status as an imPort.

Suspicion aside regarding some unseen debt counter slowly amassing in regards to this government. A more immediate concern was the curriculum.

Teikoku, while more thorough and sometimes excessively so by the standards of other schools, still fell into the trap that likely befell every school in regards to history. In that other countries are only briefly touched on and only in a general way, with only more specifics being had if said country had close ties to the school’s home country. Add in what he had learned from Kidou and Genda knew that history would now be a weak point until he could rectify that weakness. Following that logic and the evidence all around him as vehicles hovered then science would also not line up with the science he knew from home. Thus it meant there were likely math formulas that those here may consider standard knowledge that were unknown or considered higher level than he currently was.

Thus, once he had acquired passes for any and all public transport in the key cities that he could freely go to, Genda had mapped out libraries and bookstores that seemed the most stocked regarding each subject he had to play catch up on before he entered his new school. His funds mean he can only really make note of certain titles in the bookstores and either find a copy in a library or add it to a list and prioritize which would need to be purchased.

For the observant or those who just frequent such places regularly they may start to notice a new figure quietly sitting at a specific table during specific times or days. A small neatly stacked pile of books set at military precision near him for easy accessibility as he reads and makes notations in a spiral notebook neatly labeled for the current subject he is studying.

That amount of intensity is likely not good for stress levels.

Communicator Code Breaker
Any city but Marutia Falls

Kidou had given him an assignment, and while a bit daunting in regards to the scope of time needed to complete such, it was a task Genda had diligently taken up in hopes of reaching certain milestones by a set timeline. While he would prefer to do such within the room he was given by the government, sometimes time constraints meant that he had to peruse one or two archived network conversations between other tasks and chores he had assigned himself that day.

Thus in out of the way corners of cafes or on a bench in some lonely little park, one can find Genda sitting with yet another notebook open and communicator out. Sometimes he’s reading intently whatever is on the screen, or he’s listening through earbuds to something. Sometimes he’s staring fixated at the screen while listening, indicating he’s watching some video or such. Most wouldn’t really find this odd, considering teenagers and their life attached to phones and all that, but to see him pause in these actions to make long notes in that notebook before focusing once more on his communicator is not normal to most teens.

Doubly so when he seems to switch back and forth between communicator and notebook, as if double checking that whatever is being seen is being written down correctly.

A nosy individual may get a brief glance at what looks like utter gibberish in neat and concise handwriting. Or see that the conversations he’s studying so intently are ones made years ago on the network, before he realizes you’re there and shuts it all down quickly and neatly.

House Moving Party
Maurtia Falls or Heropa: Post Swear-In

Genda had only the vague concern one gets over the blackout that is typical of those seeing or hearing about an event on the news. Until a one Jacob Taylor had, with one comment made that event personal without even realizing it. Only to deepen the worry the more clarification he gave to Genda’s questions.

Kidou lived in Maurtia Falls. Maurtia Falls had a reputation that he had easily picked up on within hours of being in this country. Maurtia Falls was the highest risk city in regards to personal safety of imPorts. Kidou lived there by himself.

Oh, Genda was certain with how he spoke that Taylor was helpful, and that there may be others as well who would keep an eye out for Kidou. That didn’t mean anything in the long run, because there was no one there who specifically was there to watch or guard Kidou’s back. Even when Kidou had transferred to Raimon there had been several of his new teammates that had fallen into that role easily on and off the field. Endou and the striker Gouenji the first two to easily come to mind. None of them were here though; and despite what camaraderie there was between Kidou and Gran, it was still not the correct link in regards to Kidou and his prioritizing all others before himself in any given situation. Which meant his back was exposed to anyone that had a grudge against imPorts or were opportunistic.

That was not something that could remain as it was. For his own reasons, as well as the fact Sakuma would have kicked down Kidou’s door and moved in with him by this point when those facts had became known. Teikoku looked out for Teikoku, and even though they had stood back to let Kidou break away and find a new place with Raimon, Kidou would still be Teikoku to them in such matters. The fact Kidou has been here six months and hadn’t moved to a safer city meant asking Kidou to move was out of the question. There was likely a very well thought out argument regarding such a decision and would just cause a deeper strife to settle if he tried to circumvent said argument.

Instead he would do the next best thing.

That conclusion is what has him checking certain establishments in Heropa and Maurtia Falls regarding housing and housing transfer. Even looking around key areas of Maurtia Falls to gain an awareness and establish a mental map of the city he could easily use once the paperwork was completed and filed. Even physically visiting Helix Station to personally learn about this RISE group and thus what their presence within Maurtia Falls means in regards to imPort and native relations.

A fourteen year old walking purposefully and alone through this city is likely an odd sight for any that may pass him by. Doubly so if one listens in or is the one being asked questions regarding living in this city.

Shadow Training
Closed to Kidou Yuuto, Kiyama Hiroto, and Amada Ken; somewhere in Nonah; pre swear-in

It wasn’t anything remarkable, just a dried up creek bed connected to a storm drain that looked as if it hadn’t been maintained in a few years. Likely put there when weather patterns had been different or when flash flooding was a larger issue during certain seasons.

For now though, it’s space and low chance of others walking into the area made it an ideal spot for why they were all gathering here to begin with. Even if someone did stumble over it, it was a place that could be seen as a random hangout to those that would easily dismiss anything where teenagers congregate as not important. It also meant that depending on what exactly this ability is and what it does, it would be contained and be less likely to be noted by anyone not part of the group.

Genda had shown up early, mostly by virtue that he always ended up arriving early somewhere on principle, even if he had no reason to be early. It also allowed him to figure out exactly how to explain this to the ones that had volunteered to help. Even now that vague and brief description had not become clearer since he first read it in that folder, thus not something that could just be told about without there being any confusion over it. That may actually be what takes up most of this time instead of actually figuring out how to use said ability.

Soccer Shenanigans
Closed to: Kiyama Hiroto, Kidou Yuuto, and possibly Yagami Reina and/or Amada Ken as well if they want to show up (I leave it up to the other muns if they want to let others be able to wander on by during this.); a soccer field somewhere (Likely NMS)

With how much had to be settled and conflicting schedules it too time for such a meetup to happen in a natural way and not fully planned. Yet, soon times had synced and a field was open without the worry of many loitering around said field.

It felt familiar and yet odd as he set himself once more in front of a goal again. The school was different and his team wasn’t there, but soccer was soccer and at least in this it was familiar soccer in regards to Hissatsu. Even as the newish gloves he had bought earlier creaked as he clenched and unclenched his fists to get used to them he looked over at the one standing opposite of him.

“Is there any specific order?”

Teikoku would work from weakest to strongest until an improvement mark was met, but this was more to see what and what level said skills were at since arriving in this place. The other may wish to use a different order or such. Considering the other had offered this help to him, it was at the least he could do regarding this. Gran hadn’t needed to volunteer for such or even actually go through with it and Genda knew that.

Nonah, library (let me know if this is okay!)

[personal profile] renamaer 2017-02-22 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
As another frequent denizen of the local library, Estellise has a few favorite locations she likes to occupy within the cheerful, sunny space, and years of quiet background observation when she'd been allowed little other outlet had left their mark. So after seeing someone else there a few times, she takes notice, and if they seem to be making a regular habit of visiting and settling in for study, she goes to introduce herself.

"Is there a major product due at the school? It seems like everyone's been asking for books on that particular time period lately." Hopefully he was actually a student there... she'd made that mistake before.
renamaer: (renamer)

[personal profile] renamaer 2017-02-23 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
Considering how blunt his answer is, Estellise seems really weirdly pleased to hear his response. "Ah, that's very true," she notes, almost by rote, though her eyes are bright with interest. "I sometimes wonder if it hasn't been easier for me, coming from a world completely different from this one, so I'm not trying to reconcile two opposing histories. Or even two histories that are just enough alike for the changes and differences to be more jarring."

She tilts her head at him curiously, glancing at the varied subjects of the fort of books he'd built up around himself. "Sorry, I did just assume you were from a world similar to this one... Is that the case?"
renamaer: (reflect)

[personal profile] renamaer 2017-02-24 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
She hms thoughtfully as he speaks, listening carefully to his words and explanation. "Well, to me, it's like you just said. Since I don't have any reference, it's a little easier to accept the current state of things as the truth. But when so many things are just a bit different, relatively speaking..."

She pauses, looking at the books laid out on the table. She'd picked up enough references from people she'd met here to have some idea of the most common threads, and exactly why the state of things could be...concerning to those in the more prevalent alternate timelines.

"That's a little scarier, isn't it? Like reaching for something trusted and familiar, and finding it changed just enough to no longer be dependable anymore."
renamaer: (request)

[personal profile] renamaer 2017-03-01 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
"Something like that is always going to be subjective though," she points out, clearly interested in the discussion. "I know some people here come from worlds where they're used to fearing for their lives from monsters and such... so to them, this world must seem much safer, even if - ah, as far as I can guess, anyway - the political situation is different than most people from more similar worlds and times are used to..."

She shrugs a little, glancing at the books again. "I'm probably simplifying things; I'm sure you'd know much better than me exactly what might be unsettling about the changes."

[Once dropped, the soccer ball isn't allowed to bounce on the grass before Kidou's trapped it under one foot, arms folded with a trademark smirk.

Even having been here months it's a bit strange; part of his mind keeps insisting it should be colder than it is. Pennsylvania, by contrast, was actually cold. North Carolina was warm enough that he didn't even need to consider anything warmer than the cloak, and he wasn't planning on taking that off no matter what the temperature was.

But a daily commute of about eight hundred kilometers - he'd looked that up once - had some benefits. Kidou couldn't have asked for a more ideal type of day to play soccer than the one in Nonah right now. And it's a rare free afternoon with no obligations and a free field - how could he pass the chance for some real practice up? To be able to kick without reservations or worry is something he never got enough of, now that it was rare. Even rarer with Genda, as circumstances had led.]

Ready?

[Naturally, Genda would be already. If he simply kicked the ball at him without letting him get into a stance, Genda would immediately get it anyway. Kidou would always consider Genda as one of the best, and it was just a fact that no simple kick of Kidou's was going to break through his guard. But even though it's not strictly necessary to even ask, it's a formality he'll observe for politeness' sake, if nothing else.]

[Kidou's smirk flickers for a moment as confusion joins anticipation, eyebrows furrowing. He'd expected the same stance Genda always took - wide and crouched, ready to move at a second's notice. This is something altogether new, and he's not sure how to take it.

During the practice match they'd had to work on Death Zone, Genda hadn't used this. In fact, not once in the entire time they'd known each other had Kidou seen him use anything quite like this. Any technique he had always started from a similar starting posture. The unexpectedness makes him hesitate for just a split second longer than he usually would.

I can't begin to predict what he's planning to do right now. That stance... this is going to be interesting!

Wondering will only get him so far - right now, all he can tell is something has changed, and he's no longer certain what to expect. There's only one way to find that out.

Kidou only lets about three seconds go before he leans forward just that little bit to balance swinging his leg out straight behind him in preparation, letting his leg hang behind him for one more second as he breathes in. He's no forward by nature; his abilities are best used in groups in the midfield, but he's always been strong enough to fill wherever he needs to be. This is something he's always been prepared to do.

And Genda can easily handle however much power he can push into this. He'll shoot this with all of his strength because it's Genda receiving it. And this way, he might see if he can drag out whatever Genda's going to do as a response!

In one fluid motion, he exhales and snaps the few degrees back upright, letting his whole body add extra momentum to his kick. His foot impacts the ball hard enough for him to feel it all the way up to his knee. His leg extends outwards far enough to force him to shift his weight quickly or lose his balance. It's an electrifying feeling that lasts long after he's planted his foot back firmly to the ground; it feels far too infrequent that he got to play soccer that he really felt something from.]

[Kidou's eyes are not on the ball. Instead, he's evaluating every move Genda is making, trying to clear his mind of expectations and see what is in front of him. He can feel his attention narrow even further, fixating his racing mind on Genda and Genda alone. For these next few seconds, there is no 'rest of the world' for Kidou. Only what's reflected in the lenses of his goggles can exist until Genda's made his move.

Genda should be tensing for motion by now, but he's not. He's not in any position to jump, and Kidou did not aim for Genda - if Genda wants the ball, he's going to have to move. So why isn't he?

The answer comes immediately as Kidou starts to wonder that. He pulls off some footwork seamlessly practiced enough that it's tough for Kidou to know exactly what he did at first glance. It's evident that Genda's gained some horizontal speed as well as vertical- which is all the stranger. This isn't any movement that would let Genda get any use out of the hissatsu Kidou knows, and Kidou's sure Genda wouldn't practice things he couldn't maximize effectiveness from.

There's just not time to evaluate that any farther right now; Genda is continuing to move. Only one hand raises to handle the ball - which Kidou would never admit he noted with a slight amount of relief. One leg is behind him. His other arm is tense, meaning his whole body is braced. All of that makes sense, but Genda was just a bit lower than he'd need to be. The shoot wasn't a low angle. Genda didn't waste any motion he didn't have to.

Behind his goggles, Kidou's eyes narrow further in concentration. He's seen that before. Where?

The ball hits Genda's fist and arcs into the air, landing straight into Genda's control. There's no hesitation there to send the ball straight back to Kidou, and then Kidou's attention mostly refocuses on getting the ball. He can't shake the question, though - why would Genda have crouched at all to block a ball that wasn't coming in low, if it wasn't to jump for it?

Just before he'd need to move, Kidou shifts his weight to one leg and kicks off with the other, doing a quick spin to provide enough power so he doesn't have to stop the ball before returning it. It's very risky to do that; riskier, for Kidou, than just using a flip to kick the ball. Take too long, and miss. Go too quickly, and risk damage from the hit. But this was a calculated play anyway, even though it forces him to frantically calculate literally everything - the ball, himself, how he's going to manage to control the angle when he's not able to set up for the return shot. The reward for pulling this off is obscuring what angle he's going for until he's already sent it on its course.

Instinct always told Kidou to try to go high with Genda and try to give him less reaction time to grab it - shoot too low and you're practically giftwrapping a shoot for his particular style of blocking to counter. But this time, Genda took a lower angle than usual. It looked like he raised his arm just a few degrees higher than his shoulder.

...so what does he do when Kidou intentionally aims near the bottom of the net?]

[As expected, Genda has no counter for a shoot like that with what he's displayed. Had that been something faster than a kick alone, it would have made it in. One of Kidou's eyebrows quirks up at noting this - already, he's found a weak point - before his smirk splits into a grin.

With just a normal kick, he almost broke past Genda. He won't say anything about that except maybe as constructive criticism - but having pointed it out by taking advantage of it, he probably won't need to. But the fact that happened alone is enough to give him a small sense of accomplishment, as strange as this whole exercise is already.

There's more to this. Genda would never allow something with such a blatant hole in his defense to change a proven tactic - maybe if it'd been ordered for him to counter one specific person, but not for something this general. He'd need something that made up the difference somehow.

That pause gives him time to run back through what he's observed. All of this was very familiar. He needs a new angle to work at this question beyond trying to brute force remember - what does he know that's changed for Genda? He was in some other team against Inazuma Japan, by his own confession. That must have been where he learned this. Who else did Genda say was there?

As Genda throws the ball back, the grin fades into a look of surprised realization. He does know that sequence. He's sure of it. It doesn't have that weak point Kidou found because normally, it would be covering a very wide area.

That revelation doesn't cost Kidou reclaiming the ball, but it does break his momentum in returning it right away. He has to reach to get the ball a bit farther than he planned, meaning he has no good angle to shoot it back. So instead, he catches the ball on his foot, and kicks it high into the air. Even if he didn't have to project his rapidly forming plan in order to carry it out, the pattern he's going to follow should be fairly obvious. Middle and low have already been tested - now for the last option. The one, ironically, that Kidou usually aimed for, albeit from a lower starting angle than he intends to go for.

One second.

Two more and he'll make contact.

Kidou barely allows himself a moment to tense before he spins around like before, but only manages a half rotation before he launches himself up into the air after it, using his feet to kick off into a somersault. This was the first special maneuver Kidou ever worked out for himself - how to do a flip like this. It became essential to Illusion Ball, and a component to handling the momentum Twin Boost gave him, but before it was part of any hissatsu, he'd used this for a special kick that no one else could reach. He just had to learn how to aim upside-down.

In this case, he wants that initial height in order to keep the angle as small as possible, forcing the shoot to be out of Genda's reach. If Genda's not going to jump, that'll still work, won't it?

If Kidou's suspicion on what this is is correct, Genda can get this -- if he's willing to let Kidou force him to follow through. All Kidou has to do is complete his turn immediately after he hits the ground, but he should have time. True, it'd be just barely enough, and pulling off the landing he's intending to is probably going to put slightly more strain on one ankle than he'd normally like, but it should work.

Namely, this landing is a hard one, giving him very little time to brace for it. He lets his feet take the brunt of the impact, keeping his weight shifted just unevenly enough to let him pivot. Fortunately, this is something he's done variants on plenty of times before, so his body already knows the motions before he has to think about them. Hit the ground, let the foot his weight is less on slide diagonally behind him to lower his body instead of simply bending his knees to absorb the impact, and twist back in one fluid motion.

And see what happens.]

[It's been a while - too long, by Kidou's estimation - since he's had any reason to pull a maneuver like that. He wasn't quite as smooth as he'd like. He was a bit off center on landing. But all of that files away to the back of his mind to process later as he watches intently what Genda's going to do with a high ball.

There is no arc to aim it upwards, or move down. As expected, the shot is perfect; it'll hit its mark if left undisturbed.

Genda lifts his arm this time, but slower than before. That's something new... and yet, it feels right for something Kidou had begun to suspect. That tactic the goalkeeper had been using earlier seemed similar to Drill Smasher; Kidou would have suspected that it may have some resemblance given the circumstances he was aware of. But once Genda raises his arm, drawing power through the stance to manifest as an extension of his fist, Kidou's smirk grows wide.

That's it! He knew it! After months of not having seen anything like it, he could work it out before he had his confirmation - he'd never admit it, but it's a bit comforting to know that his skills haven't really decayed in this place.

It's just a flicker of that massive drill, but it's enough for Kidou to grasp the rest of it, confirming that he'd slotted the pieces of this puzzle into their correct places. He'd seen how low Genda had stayed earlier, which would be just low enough if he was using the drill to cover everywhere he wouldn't necessarily be able to reach. That was easily more than enough to deal with the kick Kidou had used earlier. That's not like Drill Smasher; that has to be Drill Smasher itself!

There's not much time to consider that before the ball's headed back to Kidou's direction. Kidou doesn't try any fancy maneuvering this time; he just waits for it to come into range and angles his foot to impact the side of it, sending it towards the left corner.

There's nothing more he needs to test right now. Maybe later.]
tacticianing: (Kick without reservation)

[Kidou's next plan is a simple one. He's gotten his goal, so now the real game can start between them. One of them, inevitably, will fail. Either the ball will be lost, Kidou will wear out, or he'll get the ball past Genda. Those are the only outcomes if they're not interrupted.

For this, Kidou's actually practiced lately. All the time spent launching a ball at the wall instead of a goalkeeper had been frustrating, to say the least. The only input he got from the ball was what he himself threw at it. It'd let him channel a lot of his frustration into his plays, driving them harder than usual in a relentless assault.

He hadn't gotten to test if that had improved him at all on a person yet, but if anyone could take it, it'd be Genda.

When Genda volleys the ball back, Kidou's immediately moving into action, taking just one running step closer to kick it right back at high speed, backing up once he's sent it in preparation to do that again. On a whim, he aimed for the same exact spot again - might as well be a graffiti mark on the wall - just to see what Genda does. True, that's not a weak point. It's not likely to be a weak point. But it's also something Kidou hasn't done before, so it might be interesting to see how Genda reacts if he keeps doing that.

The grin's returned in full and shows no sign of ever going away at this point. Maybe he's up to something. More likely he's congratulating himself for having seen right through Genda's new hissatsu. He knows, deep down, why Genda has it. But he doesn't feel anything more than smug pride in both himself for figuring it out and his teammate for having learned such a strong move right now. There's not much room in his thoughts for anything more complicated than that when he's busy calculating angles and working on a plan of what he wants to do with the next few shoots.]
tacticianing: (Gotcha!)

[personal profile] tacticianing 2017-03-01 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
[All the times they'd played together, Kidou would look for weakness or points to improve on in his team, but he never took Genda on as an opponent, specifically. There were enough backup players in Teikoku that any practice match they held didn't need to split the team. It would be a bad idea to, they'd been told. They needed to work perfectly, all of them as one. The one time Genda was an opponent of Kidou's before, he couldn't make a move.

But now, he can try playing out some things properly against him. He notes that Genda abandons his previous stance, going back to what Kidou would normally have expected. What can he think of about that?

Once Genda jumps, he can't alter his trajectory. He's already committed to where the ball is going to be.

Of course, if Genda uses Power Shield, Kidou is simply not getting past him. Any kick that could send the ball high enough to clear the force field would place it at too steep a return angle to make a goal. Most likely, it would go over, bounce next to Genda, and Genda would grab it. But as long as he's not using hissatsu, this plan that's forming has a chance of working. The key is reflex. He needs to get Genda responding too fast to think things through.

The ball rockets back out into the field, and Kidou races after it, springing into the air just high enough to send it straight back towards that same spot without letting it even touch the ground. He touches down onto the ground already ready to spring out into any direction to reclaim the ball when Genda returns it into play.]
tacticianing: (Bring it!)

[personal profile] tacticianing 2017-03-02 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
[Again, Kidou races for the ball, sending it back to that same spot without missing a beat. He'll repeat this again and again, just enough times to really drill in a pattern. Claim and shoot. Claim and shoot. He doesn't expect Genda would fall so deeply into a temporary pattern like this that he couldn't vary it - if Kidou were to, say, shoot for the other corner, he's fairly sure Genda would get it. He might even be expecting it; Kidou can't know what he must be thinking by now.

The goalkeeper is watching him carefully. That's going to be Kidou's key to victory - watch every move he makes, Genda.

When he gets the ball again, he tilts his head just a bit to the side, maneuvering to be on the opposite side of the ball than he'd been. Kidou does all of this with the same seamless swiftness as all the other shoots, but to someone watching carefully for tiny tells, it's clear he's intending to shoot for the other corner just moments before he does. Kidou is hoping Genda is fast enough to figure that's his game and move for it; Kidou's ideal positioning wouldn't allow much reaction time. This is about as ridiculously gimmicky a play as it gets, relying on sheer mind games to work. He'd never try something like this in a real match; it relied on way too many variables, with no guarantee of success. But here? He can allow himself the rare luxury of fun tactical shenanigans.

Kidou kicks forward, intentionally overshoots, and hits the ball on the side of his foot, sacrificing some power for subterfuge. He sends the ball, again, to the exact same corner.]
