WHO: Enid & Mako.
WHERE: Daryl's safehouse.
WHEN: Christmas Eve.
WHAT: Family feelings and other stuff and thangs.
WARNINGS: none, for now.
[For some Christmas Eve must have felt like it came in the blink of an eye, but for Enid it really had. She had vanished from this world and gone to back to hers to only reappear a week or so later. Honestly, she wasn't really sure. But as she came out of the events of her world and remembered the events of this world, it felt like blinking.
A daze she had just come out of, rather.
And pulling her out of it more were the motions she had to go through as 'new' arrival for the third time and eventually the continuous buzzing of her phone once it was returned to her hand.
A single one name came up for the first dozen messages she looked at.
Mako Mori
And a pang of guilt hit her. The woman who messaged her was obviously worried and so for a brief second she clicked to reply back via text but froze, not knowing what to type. There was just to much to know what to reply to first and so little of a clue she had to even know where to start. Best thing she decided was not to reply, but just to go see her first instead.
A door was easily located and she went on through using her skeleton key power. On the other side, she came out to her room, expecting to head downstairs before finding Mako but coincidentally seeing her on her bed.
The woman, from what she could tell, had been there a while. Covered in a blanket, half curled up with her phone in her hand and near something she could only assume was a gift it only made the sight all the more the more sad.
And unbelievable.
(No one got that worried about her. Not anymore than they had to. And she gotten used to it.)
So with a surprised look, she felt herself sharply intake air at the state Mako was in and then, with some hesitance at first, rush over.]

The wrapped present was very carefully pushed aside with a soft exclamation of Enid before Mako wrapped her arms around her and pulled her into a hug. There were a thousand questions Mako wouldn't ask, but the way her arms went out and the hug asked all of it for her.
She'd been worried she wouldn't see Enid again at all, that she'd been taken back, or a thousand other terrible things that might happen in a world she knew impossibly well. There were things worse than just going back to Enid's world. Mako knew them.]
You're home.
[Mako was trying so very hard not to cry, really, that it came out rusty and more than a little broken but so very, very happy all at once.]

She wanted to apologize right then and there, but it seemed not quite right to say the situation. Besides she'd rather have turn the situation move away from the worry Mako was feeling and awkwardness she herself was feeling. So she nodded against Mako's shoulder, feeling like cracking a little humor.]
Mmhm. I came back not long ago. Am I in trouble?
no subject
And you never will be.
[Mako meant that. Fifteen or not, the only trouble Enid could ever be in was something Mako would be there to protect her from. It was that protectiveness that had brought the worries rushing in. They were everything she couldn't while Enid was gone do to make sure she was safe.
Mako took a few breaths but the sheer relief and the sizable protectiveness remained. When she released Enid, she brushed at the tears that managed to escape with an apologetic hand.]
It's alright. You're safe and that's what matters the most.

With the way those words cause a pang in her heart again, she has to wonder WHAT/HOW she is even supposed to respond that? Honestly, Mako was too endearing for her own good. And Enid huffs with a small, involuntary laugh, hugging Mako a little tighter before letting herself pull back.]
I was never really in any danger back home. [Felt like the thing to say to that after a moment of thought.]

She let a soft murmur and dropped a kiss against the top of Enid's head before briefly cupping her cheeks.]
I wish I had gone with you.

Every day that passed by at home, she was careful. Even when she acted recklessly to reach Maggie. That was a story for another time, though.
With the kiss to her forehead, Enid felt a familiar sensation that had been placed there not even a few days ago in her world. A fleeting sort of comfort, cut shorter by Mako's own statement.]
Why? [She asks. Her eyes still were on Mako, growing wider with genuine concern to why she could want that. Even for her. Because in her experience it was not her but the people she loved that were lost. This belief was only reinforced again by recent events.]
no subject
[Mako was quiet for a long while.]
We both live in impossible worlds, Enid. Mine, yours, and this one. And the only one I can protect you in the most is this one. If I had gone with you, I could have protected not only you but the people you love.
So, [Mako's fingers brushed at Enid's hair gently] I wish I had gone with you.
no subject
Mako's reason is a good one but she still needs the moments to adsorb it.]
But... what would you do if you got hurt in my world? [Yes, now they're talking about the impossible. Enid swallows a lump that seems to grow in her throat at the very thought. Their world was now plagued by Negan, after all, and she didn't wish anyone else in on that or the dangerous fight against him.]
You're one of the people I care for. [That's easier to admit than she thought it was.]
no subject
[There's something very Daryl about her next words, the soft shrug of her shoulders, the shape of her smile.]
I would have to. When you care for someone, you get better for them.
no subject
Sometimes careful wasn't all there was to it. It was watching out for people and situations out of your control. It was trusting the right ones or being extremely smart or lucky on your own. Which is why Mako's words are a bit unbelievable and sweet at the same time.
Enid's eyes drops to the floor, trying to sort out her feelings and next thought.]
It's better if we don't think about it and if we all could just stay here.
no subject
[Her fingertips curl a little against Enid's hair as gently as possible.]
We're all here, now. [Her eyes close and there's little lean, a brush of her cheek. Her fingertips are cold and her voice is a whisper.]
Right now and the moment after this. We're here.
no subject
More threats, more losses, and everything in between.
She couldn't handle thinking about it anymore than that so she pushed such thoughts away. The bit of hair Mako's fingers touched seemed to come to life, frizzling upwards and following the static. Her perfect hair left wavy and less than perfect, not that she really cared. Her head tilted slightly as a response to the brush against her cheek too.
A small smile eventually forms at the next thing Mako says and her eyes turn back up to her.]
For right now, yeah. I'd rather just think about how we're here. Not home.
[Home and any discussion of home is just better on pause.]
no subject
[Her words come soft in a whisper, quiet like it'll be taken away if she says it too loudly.]
And you are my family.
no subject
This is my home, too. You're like family. [As much as the rest of them, she means. Carl, Daryl, Andrea... those still at home.
Her words are light and almost a whisper too, because forcing them out any louder would probably tip the emotions she's feeling and trying to hold back over the edge. She just can't let herself shed a single tear now because then it'd all come flooding out. Mako has worried too much about her already, she thinks.]

We should make something good and hot to drink. After all, this is something to celebrate.
no subject
You want to celebrate home and family?
no subject
[Mako looks down for a moment, her smile a little wobbly before it settles. It feels like the first time she's said that aloud.]
I think it's time to celebrate this family. [She shakes her head a little.] This is something I never thought I could have, Enid.

Every word she felt herself relate to, but just as her mouth opened to share how she understood, she seemed to find the words were harder to say than she thought and closed her mouth again. Something she was able to recall about Mako's link with Daryl told her it would be just as bad to speak about it because sometimes ignorance was bliss. They were better off not knowing what had happened at home with the group that called themselves the Saviors and the members they lost.
Enid understands how Mako must have felt like sharing that with her and gives her a moment to settle. Her own look falls a little to the floor to hide any quiver or ill expression remembering what happened at home causes her. She let's herself feel numb to it so she can eventually look at Mako, with only an understanding look there.]
I think we should, too.
