My brother the fault is mine
WHO: Edward Elric, Winry Rockbell, Alphonse Elric and Noi
WHERE: Residence #31
WHEN: Sat 14th June
WHAT: Noi comes over to investigate Ed's arm and leg. To assess whether she can help regrow his limbs
WARNINGS: Ed and his language? Maybe.
[Ed really should be more used to this. And he is. He's used to Winry removing his prosthesis. Just that usually, she only needs to remove the arm. Not the leg as well. So his mobility is seriously impeded right about now when Noi says she needs to remove his auto-mail to get a good look. And of course, whenever Ed's mobility is impeded like this, he gets a bit restless.
He understands Winry and Al's desire to get him to at least look into this possibility. Even if he has no idea how they would cough up the money for something like this so damned soon after arriving. But he is well aware this is what they have been working towards for years now. If he hadn't been told of the possibility of Al getting his body back too, Ed would likely have shut the idea down outright. But this place seemed strange like that. And apparently that was to be one of his brother's powers. He's just not sure he entirely trusts using it yet before they know the details. The possible price. Even now part of him is terrified of this, the moment there's a knock at that door which could change everything. Fix it all so easily when they have been searching for a way to do this ever since that night.
He sits at the edge of his bed, careful not to move too much or else he would lose his balance.]
Don't get your hopes up too much. Either of you. There's a chance, but it might not necessarily work. And even if it might, it'll cost a damned fortune.

for this reason, No1 takes a bit to arrived.
She is wearing her mask, something she wears religiously when going out, and per usual wearing her usual gym suit with the name "No1" stamped at front and back. it certainly makes her look like a giant of a man, but Noi never bothered herself with that.
Once arrived, she knocks at the door, thinking for herself she should have asked everyone their names ]
no subject
He's standing by the door, waiting for the knock he knows is to come.]
I know, brother. But it wouldn't hurt for Noi to have a look.
[They can't afford it right now seeing as how they've been here less than a week but if it was possible for her to do and Ed wanted to, then Al could get another job. That was one good thing about being nothing more than a suit of armor - he could work 24/7.
When Noi does knock, Al moves off to answer it, leaving his brother and Winry alone for the moment. He is not expecting someone wearing a mask but then she probably isn't quite expecting him to stand over seven feet tall. And hey, at least the two of them knew each other's names.]
Noi?
no subject
Yeah, Ed. Even though I don't know why you wouldn't want to keep your automail! It's so amazing! The hydraulics and the gears! The bioelectric mechanics involved!
[She's pushing it a bit, but she figures Ed might need a chance to blow off some tension before Noi comes through the door.]
no subject
[Even if she and Granny do tease and call him their cash cow with how often he breaks his arm. When he hears the knock at the door, he instinctively tenses, pursing his lips as he looks to the door. This is all pretty sudden for the most part, but he knows they would berate him constantly if he didn't even let No1 come and have a look at him. He's perhaps a bit paler all of a sudden, giving a slight nod when Al goes to open the door.]
Come in.
no subject
[ out of respect, Noi pulls her mask up, eyes looking at the armor up and down ] That's a really cool armor. Are you using it for some sort of training? [ because she used one for a while exactly for that .
The woman remembers, rising the bag with the rabbit she carried ] Sorry for the wait, I had to get few things to make this whole thing easier. [ if they lived in Noi's world, they wouldn't need this much confirmation and worry, but she knows they are human and they would freak out about it if not explained and demonstrated properly ]
no subject
[He steps to the side to make room for her to come through the door.] Yeah, sort of. [You know, that sounds better than the whole "hobby" lie they use.
Al points to Winry.] This is Winry Rockbell and that's my brother, Ed. [His gesture moves to his partially limbless sibling before sweeping towards Noi.] This is Noi.
[Yep, introducing them as if he's known Noi for years rather than for only a brief while.
He's curious about what's in the bag but will let her explain what it is.]
no subject
...so did Mr. Kimblee, though, and look what happened with him?
She raises her hand in greeting.]
Hi!
no subject
Hey. Glad you found the place okay. Winry took off the auto-mail so you can have a look.
no subject
[ finally, she comes closer to Edward ] So you are the one. Mind if I ask a couple of questions about this?
[ this, she means his arm.
And since Noi is huge, she kneels down in front of Ed and AHAHA WHAT IS PERSONAL SPACE, because Noi has no qualms reaching for it to specifically see the extent of the scar ] For how long have you been armless? And legless, I guess. [ Noi is nice, but not tactful. Sorry, bro. ]
And the auto-mail, do you know how that works? Winry said something about it connecting to the nerves.
no subject
But he stays quiet when Noi asks the questions - he could answer the first one easily enough but the second one definitely delved into the area of an automail mechanic.]
no subject
no subject
It happened when I was eleven. About four or five years ago now. The auto-mail questions, Winry probably knows more about all that. I only know the basics myself. But yeah, the ports help it connect right to the nerves so I can use them more or less like a normal limb in terms of movement. She knows all the details on that and how it works.
no subject
The scar tissue, though, it's what Noi is focusing on the most. She moves just to look at his beck for a moment and see the scarring there too, and finally she gets up, scratching the back of her head ]
Well, I can do it. The thing is, it'll hurt like a bitch. [ Noi has got half of her body exploded once. it's not the same, but she knows pain. And humans are often a bit too frail about it.
She turns to Al, to ask for the anatomy book ] Sorry, Al.
When healing something like that, the scar tissue can't be there, or my smoke will just regrow the scar tissue back. So to speak, the wound has to be fresh again. And that means cutting it out. [ that's why she wants the anatomy book. She wants to show him just how much she would be cutting out, in a picture of the human body ]
Another thing is, if you have any metal inside the area being regrown, it can hurt even more. Because when your limb is growing, it'll be trying to push outside any sort of element that is getting in the way.
no subject
He hands over the book.] It's okay.
no subject
Because Ed lost his entire arm, Granny had to add more metal and the braces to support the weight of the automail.
[She points at the bolt in Ed's collarbone, as well as the lattice support attached to his ribcage.]
The ports are metal, too...stainless steel.
[The idea of cutting out all the scar tissue was horrific, but. It was Ed's choice. If he wanted it, Winry would do whatever she could to help.]
no subject
But if it meant that he would have an arm and leg again. If this place had a means of getting both of them their bodies back....]
If that is what it would take.
no subject
But suddenly, Noi's hand drops to grip at the leg, her smile growing wider (and probably a bit dangerous) ] This one is a lot easier. I just have to cut few inches above, you will barely notice the pain. And I can even do it right now.
[ but she pulls her hand away and her smile drops just a bit, as Noi gets up, scratching the back of her neck. ] Is it really that important? It's not like your automails are that crappy. [ Noi winks back at Winry. They really are pretty nice, in Noi's world the robots aren't so developed.
After, she heads towards Al to take the bag. She opens it, pulling the half of the dead rabbit ]
How did you even lose your arm and leg? Were you in some sort of fight?
no subject
[Pain was not an unfamiliar concept to Ed. If Al had his way they'd do one limb at a time but Ed could be stubborn sometimes when it came to his own pain.
But if Noi notices, he doesn't say anything about how Ed lost them. He's waiting for the cue from his brother about how much they're going to tell about their past to the people in this new world.]
It is important. [The words come out quietly.] We've been looking for a way to restore his body for years.
no subject
She doesn't say anything about how Ed lost his limbs, either. She knows the story he tells - about the bomb at the Risembool train station.]
no subject
[He's well aware this will hurt. He's just used to pain and isn't entirely necessarily aware of just how much will need to be taken with his arm. He's not too sure on how soon this could or should be done. At least in terms of money. At this point, they've still barely arrived here and don't have a lot yet to be able to pay her.]
I don't mind when. I'm just not sure we have enough to pay you yet. I can manage fine with the auto-mail until then. This just....seemed worth checking up about at least. We've been looking for a way to fix things ever since that night. It....it was an accident.
[It's vague enough, and not entirely a lie. He's not going to openly tell the story, the truth without prompting. Without preferably knowing she can be trusted.]
no subject
Noi finally she turns to Edward again ]
You can't keep having your arm broken, after this. Well, actually you can, but I won't be around forever. [ she plans on leaving soon
yeah Noi, sure you will. but what she means is: ] You spent years without the arm and leg. When they are back, it'll be hard to remember they can't just be repaired like the automails.[ and she skips the money question for now. ]
All right.
This is how it'll go. [ Noi lifts the dead rabbit by its ears to show the three. It's cut in half through its abdomen and has no organs inside, so there is no problem it'll make a mess. After she points at it, specifically the cut through its stomach ] Bone, nerves, veins, organs, muscles, conne--..... [ she pauses. Connective tissue? She read it in the anatomy book, but she isn't sure. Aren't there more tissues, like cartilage? What comes after the muscles? ... yeah okay, it doesn't matter ] --muscles, other tissues, then skin.
[ That's how it'll all grow back and the rabbit will be the demonstration. The moment she stops explaining them how it'll grow, Noi turns the rabbit to herself and she expels from her mouth a dark dense smoke that seems to contain powder or ash. The smoke enters the rabbits body and that very moment, the spinal cord is grows back and every single other missing part of the rabbit follows along. Intestines, kidneys, stomach, veins, nerves, muscle - it's hard to keep up with what grows and when exactly, because in a matter of second, the whole rabbit is rebuilt. it doesn't take more than 10 seconds for the once cut in half rabbit to be fully reconstructed.
It's no joke when Noi says she is immortal; it's exactly because of this smoke she claims to be. All of her wounds heal in seconds and her body can regenerate no matter how badly she is maimed ]
no subject
It doesn't take very long but those few seconds will probably be more painful than anything Ed has ever felt before.
Al doesn't say anything but fixes his gaze on his brother. They've seen how it works and now it's down to whether Ed would want to do it.]
no subject
Would Ed really want to do this?
She'd give him her support, either way. He and Al had put up with so much. But would it work on Al, too? Would the soul trapped in the blood seal be enough to bring Al's body back, without this whole superhero thing?
But if they - when they - went home, would they keep their bodies? Unconsciously, she shifted closer to Ed, ready to help in whatever way she possibly could.]
no subject
[That is not so much what he's worried about. It's the cost. Not even necessarily the pain. Since he's been through hell and back anyway and is no stranger to it after his auto-mail surgery. He listens and watches as she explains and demonstrates using the rabbit. His gold eyes widen as he watches. It's almost eerily similar to watching the homunculi regenerate, really.
He's silent for a moment, considering. It might not take long at least, but it still looks painful. At least it would be over quick? The initial pain at least.]
That was....quick. We might need to save up a bit. I assume this sort of thing won't be cheap, if I wanted both the arm and leg.
no subject
The arm would be the most expensive part. Because I think it'll kill you if I don't use an IV drip with my smoke to keep you alive during the prodcedure. The scar is too extensive and I'd even have to cut through your neck and you have important arteries there and you might die before I'm done cutting off all of the scar tissue. [ humans are weaker than magic users. She knows that. ]
I can do the leg for free.
[ When she is done wrapping the rabbit, she places it inside the bag carefully. Now that she thinks about it, she's getting hungry
noi, now it's not the time]no subject
It's up to you, brother. I could work another job to get the money for your arm.
no subject
I'll help, too, Ed.
[Whatever these boys need, she'll give everything she can.]
no subject
[The mention of helping with his leg for free takes him by surprise, naturally. But he expects the arm will more than cover that cost once there's enough saved up to manage to pay for that. So it will probably even out anyway. He's not sure how he feels about Winry and Al offering to help too though. He appreciates the offer. And it would mean he could sort this out that much sooner with their help. Right now probably isn't really the time to argue.
Especially with reiterating how dangerous the arm would be, with the possibility of him dying in the process. It wouldn't be the first time he would risk his life, but that still doesn't entirely sit right with him. Not until he figures out how to help Al too.
Feeling both Al and Winry watching, waiting for his response, he gives a nod, determined to get this done.]
I guess at least for now we can try with the leg. And I'll let you know about the arm once the money is sorted.
no subject
How much should it be?... 600$... maybe 700$ [ Noi crosses her arms and her head tilts to the side ] I have no idea how much to charge you. [ she is that honest ]
Anyway, I can do the leg right now, if you want.
no subject
Maybe we should start with your leg and then you can decide if you want to do your arm later.
[If Ed's willing to do it, Al won't back out. This is what they wanted from the moment they made the mistake.]
And we want to repay you somehow for the leg. [The alchemist side of him couldn't accept something without equal exchange.]
no subject
Miss Noi, would Ed need any therapy to get his leg back in shape?
[Because that's important to know.
And she noticed how Noi had eyed the rabbit. Maybe she's hungry? And that makes her smile, because maybe she can pay for Ed's leg.]
For payment for Ed's leg, I could cook for you...that rabbit, right now, and an apple pie? Or a few meals?
no subject
[Even if his initial instinct is to protest that he pay her himself. Ed nods in agreement to Al. At the same time he wants to say he'll only do this if Al gets his body back. There is still caution around that power of his though. He wouldn't want this if he wasn't sure he could figure some way to manage the same in restoring Al's body somehow. That's his goal before sorting out his arm. To get Al back.]
The rabbit? I guess I can vouch for her pie, yeah.
no subject
[ BUT WAIT A MOMENT someone mentioned food.
Noi stops, looking at Winry and the Ed and then she smiles wide ] really? I want to try it then! It has been a while since I've had any apple pie, that sounds delicious! [ Noi's top priority at all times: food. ] I was going to cook the rabbit, but if you want to have a go, it's alright! Different worlds probably have different recipes, too, and I want to try them! [ YEAH. super excited because FOOD.
Until she realizes. oh yeah. leg. Okay, she has to do that.
Noi squeezes her fist until the knuckles pop and proceeds to do the same to the other, as she approaches Edward. ] It's better if you scream instead of bitting something; the idea is that you keep your mouth open.
[ She glances over her shoulder, back at Al and Winry ] He WILL scream a lot, but it's better if you don't interfere, I don't want to deal with all of you at the same time. [ seriously, it'd be a pain in the ass. And after she looks at Ed once again. ] There will be blood too. According to the book, humans have a huge artery with a lot of blood passing through the leg.
no subject
As for the actual process, he looks to Noi first then over to his brother. The surgery for automail was not something he'd been allowed to stay in the room for - and he's not sure he wants to change that now.]
I'll take the rabbit downstairs for you, Winry. Then I will just wait out in the hallway.
[Not too far in case either of his friends needed help but not within sight and reach to stop the process because of his own softness.]
no subject
Al, after you take the rabbit downstairs, why don't you get my room ready? We'll move Ed there afterward, so we can clean up in here.
[It'd give Al something to do, or something else to think about for a few seconds while this was going on.]
no subject
[That much is a relief. He can't afford to be dragged down like that again. Least of all here in some completely different world with playing hero and all these powers.
He simply gives a nod, seeming more amused by Noi's enthusiasm for Winry's cooking than anything and gives a wave as Al heads out downstairs. He gets it. He wouldn't necessarily want to be around for this if it were the other way around either, certain if he was he'd stop this if Al was in such pain.
And ha. Better to scream. He's not sure if he might or not, depending on the pain. But he never did during his auto-mail surgery at the age of eleven. But for all he knows this might hurt even more. He might not be able to help it. And Noi is saying he should. Well. He'll see what happens soon enough.]
Blood isn't an issue. [Winry's used to it and he is even moreso with his fighting and how many times he's been injured and in hospital. He's ready, steeling himself after attempting to give Winry a reassuring look.]
Ready when you are.
no subject
[ Al leaving is good; less one person Noi has to worry about while she does this. Because she will be the one cutting the leg, without any sort of anesthesia, she doesn't want some dude wearing an armor to grab her from behind. Winry looks far too small to even be able to do anything against Noi, so she isn't worried about the girl.
Certainly No1 could explain what she was about to do, but Noi decided not to. In fact, the element of surprise would probably make it hurt less. maybe not. But at least Edward would probably be too shocked to realize it.
Because of her super-strength, Noi is able to cut limbs with her own hands as if they were butter and she plans on cutting the leg off right above the scar with a swift movement. Anesthesia is useless because her healing smoke will regenerate the leg in less than five seconds. It'll be gory and violent, even if it'll only last for a very short amount of time.
She waits for Alphonse to leave and close the door before she turns to her "patient". ]
Don't be so serious. You are getting your leg back for free, you should smile. [ she says that laughing and comes closer to Edward ] What's your age, anyway? Don't tell me you are like twelve. [ she is joking, but she is also distracting him. it's not like he knows she will be using her own hand, but-
[ Once noi is close enough to Edward, she glances over her shoulder to look back at Winry with a big smile ] Hey, Winry. if your rabbit is good, I might drop by and ask for the recipe, later on.
[ and that's when her hand suddenly moves and slices through the leg, cutting it off an inch above the scar. ]
no subject
She's not ready to see the blood spilling, not Ed's blood, not such a huge flood of it, but she snaps back to the here and now again. Instead of grabbing a pillow out from behind Ed to try to halt the bleeding, she reaches out to Ed, grabbing his left hand and squeezing it tight between both of hers.
She can't even yell at Noi that she should've prepared them, because, in her head, it makes sense - Granny might've done the same thing.]
Hang on, Ed!
no subject
[He splutters in protest, correcting her and sufficiently distracted with that just as she brings her hand down and slices at his leg. Almost instinctively, involuntarily, the surprised yell escapes his lips even as the pain sinks in. At least when he was getting the auto-mail fitted and all, he was drugged so the pain was more bearable. This is an entirely different level of it.
His hand grips Winry's when she reaches for his left hand, clasping it tightly as he feels the blood, hears it dripping to the floor. His right auto-mail hand grasps on to the blankets of the bed as he tries to remain still, possibly ripping them in the process a bit. Waiting for whatever might happen next.]
no subject
while her other hand reaches for his chin to make sure he won't close the mouth, Noi forces the smoke inside Edward's mouth. The blood spilling out would be the first thing to stop, and after it, the pain. Like Noi described it (and showed), bone grows first and veins and arteries, nerves and muscles, followed by other tissue. The skin is the last thing to grow and cover the newly formed member.
Only after it's complete Ed will be able to feel it properly and move it, but Noi only stops expelling her smoke when she is certain that he can. ]
no subject
If someone like Noi was back home, there'd be no need for automail.
But Noi is from another world, and...someone would always need an automail mechanic. Maybe not Ed, eventually, but there were other people who would.]
That's amazing. [She says, hushed.]
no subject
The pain is the main thing he feels, but it's still such a strange sensation to feel the leg growing back like this. Such a strange concept given how different it would be back home, in theory, to regain his limbs. Once the pain fades, it's an eerie feeling as he glances down and sees it. It was one thing to watch it with the rabbit. Another entirely to have this happen with his own leg. He feels almost dizzy with the sight, that sudden blood-loss and is relieved when Noi stops and it is apparently over, almost slumping forward to Winry when he's released.]
Thanks...
[It's perhaps a bit hoarse, weak, but no less genuine in his gratitude for her help, even if the process was painful and strange. He means it.]
no subject
[ she pats Edwards shoulder next; it's amazing, most humans would have passed out with all of that, but apparently he could handle himself ] No problem. You did pretty good for a human!
[ yeah, that sounds pretty racist of her, but that's the way Noi is. She doesn't mean anything bad by it, not really, but humans are weaker than magic users by a long shot. At least in her world. ]
Okay, the blood loss won't linger for too long, my smoke will fix that, too. Don't forget your leg is flesh now. Chances are, you will bump it everywhere now and it'll hurt a lot more than you remember it to hurt. [ sensitivity issues; actual tissue is much different than metal, even if the metal is connected to the nerves ]
if there's something wrong, let me know, i'll cut it off and regrow it again. [ and she laughs at her own joke noi no stop that - until she stops ] Ah- it's a joke. The leg is fine.
no subject
This is incredible, Noi.
[Her voice is hushed as she feels the warmth of skin. But she pulls her hand away from Ed's leg, and disengages her other hand from his, and when she speaks next, it's briskly.]
I think I need to go fix a rabbit and start a pie. Thank you again, Noi!
[She bowed her thanks before walking out of the room, shouting that Al needed to see Ed's new leg, it's amazing!]
no subject
He passes her on the stairs on his way up and heads into Ed's room. But the moment he sees the brand-new leg (and the blood everywhere), Al stops.]
It looks like new! [No scars like the others that littered his brother's body.]
no subject
I try not to be a klutz and bump it. It'll be fine.
[Really? It's more the arm he's sure he'll fuck something up with once that returns to normal. He's so used to instinctively blocking attacks with it by now that it is likely he'll do the same until he adjusts. But that's something to worry about later. The leg shouldn't take too much to adjust to beyond the weight, he figures. There's a tired smile in attempt to reassure Al when his brother comes in though.]
Yup. The leg is apparently the easier part, but I reckon it worked out.
[Now there's just the clean up of the blood. Adjusting to the different weight in comparison to the auto-mail. While the one he had fitted was lighter, being the Northern make, it still wasn't as light as an actual leg would be. He shifts a bit, trying to move over on the bed to where there isn't blood at the floor and tests it out. Feeling the floor under his foot, tapping it once, twice before he moves to attempt to stand.]
I'm so sorry for the wait!
noi is always starvingThe woman, though, moves to grab a bag from her pocket. They had to do something about the part of the leg Noi cut off and because she used to this sort of thing, she doesn't mind disposing of it by herself. ]
it was pretty fast, you almost didn't have to leave. [ but she isn't criticizing Al for doing so. ] The leg is easy, the arm won't be. I'll have to figure out an exact price for it, but I'll let you know. In any case, I don't want you awake during that, so while more complicated for me, it'll be easier for you.
[ She does watch edward trying to stand, but after she reaches for the cut off stump of the leg to put it inside the bag ] Do you know how to clean blood? Usually hydrogen peroxide works. Meat tenderizer with water or white vinegar also work. [ guess who is VERY used to all of this ]
Also. [ noi lifts the leg ] Do you want this, or can i throw it away?
no worries, I've been slow with this thread
No, it was better that I did. [As much as Al might be used to seeing his brother's blood and hearing him scream, it wouldn't stop him from wanting to protect his brother. Even if it had been to return his leg.
Protective Elric brothers are protective.]
That would be good. I can get some stuff for next time. [Winry can tell him exactly what he needs and Al can get it from work. Animals have to be put out sometimes.
He waves his hands.] Oh, don't worry about the blood. We can take care of it.
[They knew what it was made up of and could transmute it into something easier to clean.]
You and brother should go see how Winry is doing with that rabbit while I clean up here.
no subject
[Because as much as Al knows this is what they have been aiming for, the Elric brothers are still pretty protective over each other and he'd hate seeing or hearing Ed in pain, even if only for a few seconds. Easier to avoid that potential of dealing with restraining a seven foot suit of armor.]
Anaesthetic? Yeah, if she wants me out, we might need some. The dose might be different from with animals though. We...we can figure that out closer to the time. Probably ask and someone working at the hospital or something might be able to help us with that.
[He's tentative as he takes a step, then two. Okay this isn't so bad. And neither is the smell, that metallic tang of blood is something he's probably far too used to himself.]
Eh, probably just throw it out. I mean, we're not going to get any sort of use for it. So we'll see you in the kitchen, Al?
[He figures Al won't take too long at least. He'd probably find Ed still heading downstairs and adjusting anyway.]
