The Dolley Madison Library is a two story structure brimming with books and neoclassical architecture. Clearly a well-funded facility, this library is a bright, warm, and welcoming environment for polite (if political) conversation this evening. The main floor, near the back of the building and behind rows and rows of looming bookshelves is the slightly risen stage destined for tonight's event. It is but a darkly painted plateau nearly a foot off the ground, a little stage intended for reading events and author interviews. Nine simple wooden chairs are set upon the stage, and a microphone greets them all.

The audience portion is complete with organized, open seating and a table of non-alcoholic refreshments. There are muffins and cookies, too, for those of you who have come hungry for both IDEAS and SNACKS.

EACH CANDIDATE gets a time slot to speak about tonight's theme: THE ROLE OF IMPORTS IN RELATION TO METAHUMANS IN A HISTORICALLY NON-POWERED COMMUNITY.

Candidate imPorts may address their solutions and visions, or even drudge up more complications, in response to the thematic prompt. You can be a candidate of hope, or of fear -- it all depends on your perspective. Concerned imPort citizens are allowed to speak with the candidates about their answers, and debate them if necessary. ImPorts are also allowed to debate among each other after the candidates have all spoken.

The event begins at 7PM EST, but may last well into the night.

Even if the medical needs are those that humans might not necessarily agree with? After all, Mark, we've got vampires here. It's entirely possible that we'll get a lich or something like that who can only feed off of humans.

[ he's deliberately calling Miles Mark: partly to see how he responds, partly because he sees you hanging out in the audience Mark, hope this cheers you up a little bit. ]

[ Oi. Miles twitches a bit at the name but doesn't comment on it. Yet. ]

We already have some like that here. And they need support too.

Some people aren't going to like that, Mark. How d'you plan to navigate the inevitable controversy you're going to get when people start arguing that 'wait a minute, how come that dragon's getting the same rights as I am?' Because again, pointing out the obvious, we are that different.

[ yeah, the Doctor's just...gonna keep using the wrong name ]

Miles. And I've been navigating that question all my life. Except the label hasn't been "dragon" or "vampire," but rather "mutant." We can't change all minds, no, but we can normalize a little bit at a time.

Have any ideas about how that normalization process is going to happen?

[dendarii]

Well, having someone visibly and obviously unusual helps, though on that point I'm not actually the best candidate. [ Which is an utterly bizarre thing to contemplate, given how his stature has defined his life otherwise. ] The other is in setting a good example. Outreach. And ultimately showing that we are simultaneously no threat as well as not a drain on the native resources.

[ The Doctor gives Miles a little nod, and a little smile of his own. ] Good luck with that outreach, Mark. ImPorts as a whole are a troublesome bunch.

[ The most deadpan stare. ]

Yes. I can see that. But I am nothing if not determined.

We get along alright, [ the Doctor responded, with a simple shrug.

[ With that, the Doctor simply shrugs. ]

Wouldn't know! But I hope he does.
