[ Every time Kaneki is compared to a zombie, he really wonders how is he even like one. Aside from the need to eat human flesh, the usual zombies (not Hazel, sure) are dead and feel no pain or get sick, they are rotting, can eat anything that moves and are permanently hungry, have no intelligence or ability to speak, they can infect others, and they literally came from humans, which technically makes them humans. The only similarity between them and ghouls are the whole "eating humans" part, literally nothing else is the same.
It's good that Daryl didn't actually voice it because this is a very serious matter to Kaneki. He was tricked by a doctor who was meant to save his life and decided to play god instead and turned him into a ghoul; Kaneki was forced into this and unlike a walker who can't think or feel and is dead, he thought and felt and had to live through all of it and consciously experience all of it as well. His very own biology was forcibly changed into something he had always considered monstrous, and he was shunned by both humans and ghouls for it; people tried to kill him for not being human, and ghouls tried to kill him for not being a ghoul; and both sides used him as well.
All he ever wanted was to go on a date and ended up as Ghoul savior.
But there is a pause. This happened 7 years ago (technically five, if he doesn't count the years he spent in this world), and it felt like a lifetime, and it has been such a long time ever since Kaneki admitted to having been human before. Ever since he accepted that he was a ghoul, his humanity became so small; he couldn't be a human, not with the kind of life he lead. Being a human while doing the things he did would only drive him into despair, though his humanity is what gave him the chance to build everything he did. So it's not something he should dismiss, even if it's something he rarely mentions. ]
I was born human. When I was 18, a crazy doctor put ghoul organs into me after I was in an accident. [ that's the very short version, but he doesn't know if Daryl wants anything other than that as he doesn't like to talk about and understand what Kaneki is. Sasaneki knows why this sort of surgery was possible, though the success rate is two in... thousands. ] When i woke up, I stopped being able to eat and slowly realized what it meant. [ VERY slowly, like he went around eating human food and puking his guts out for who knows how long ]
