WHO: Alec and Magnus
WHERE: Maurtia Falls
WHEN: 11/04
WHAT: Date night!!!!
WARNINGS: Nothing of note.
[ It's been a long time since Magnus has been on a date. He hasn't felt the desire to, no one's captured his attention in such a way for a very long time. Not to mention he wasn't even positive that he'd even have the opportunity with Alec. And now here he is, getting ready to go on a date. Yes, there's trouble going on back home and they should be doing their very best to get out of this situation, but they have to eat!
So, they might as well eat together. In a cozy setting. With good food and good drinks. Amazing company. That Magnus is a little more excited than he's showing is his own business. But he thought—
Well, it doesn't matter what he thought. The fact remains that they're being given a chance now to enjoy an evening together without the stresses from home. They'd be fools not to take advantage of it.
He dresses in something simple—for him—in dark grey slacks and a violet shirt with gold embroidery around the cuffs and collar, an assortment of random jewelry and a swipe of gold liner on his eyes. Subtle class.
There's a plethora of places to choose from in town, but it's a Hispanic place that catches his eye enough to usher them both inside. It's nice, it's not too crowded, the wait staff engaging enough tgat he asks for a recommended cocktail rather than a staple drink. When they're finally alone, Magnus offers a smile after taking a sip of his drink. ]
Well? Will you be able to make it through the night?

He's moderately optimistic when they enter the restaurant—he's open-minded and is happy to try new food—and the interior is neat and clean. But the staff is... different. Not off-putting, exactly, but not what he's expecting.
Alec too gets a cocktail from their waitress, smiling politely as she takes their order. When she leaves, he turns his attention to Magnus. ]
I can manage. [ He leans forward a little, lowering his voice. ] Is it just me or does it seem more like a club than a restaurant to you?
[ The women, while very friendly, don't seem to be wearing as much as he would expect for servers at a restaurant and the rat-faced man flitting around talking to everybody—the manager?— is wearing a full suit.
And a sombrero.
It's all very strange. ]

It's strangely charming.
He hums a little note of acknowledgment, casting his gaze about the space. The women are a little provocatively dressed for a restaurant that doesn't tout the name of a lady part, but it's not off-putting. Not really. Just a little strange. The man in the suit and sombrero combo is a bit on the ridiculous side and after thinking a moment on it, Magnus snaps a quick picture with his phone while his back is turned. Might as well post about it on the blog! Even the music has more of a club-type feel than he would normally expect from a restaurant.
He likes this place. ]
It's certainly different! [ His eyes settle back on Alec as he settles his hand on the table, the tip of his middle finger idly drawing a nonsense shape there. Pointless busy work until he can get his hand on Alec's. ] Just another strange adventure.
[ Because they haven't been on enough lately, apparently. ]
How's the job going? Still don't like it?

No wonder Magnus likes it.
Alec just gives him a look. It's a flat kind of look, like he isn't sure if he's having him on or serious. Although, he supposes he isn't entirely wrong. It's an adventure. Some kind of an adventure.
His nose wrinkles as he leans back in his seat. It's an automatic reaction, a recoiling away from something unpleasant. Being a DJ is awful. ]
No. I don't. [ The top of the table gets the brunt of his scowl as he drums his fingers irritably against it. ] I keep trying to get fired and nothing works.

He doesn't bother to hide the smile that he feels coming at the annoyance on Alec's face. Oh, he could have tried, but why? It isn't that he delights in Alec's disappointment over his job, but delights over the adorable disgruntlement. That can't be helped. He only waits a beat to decide with himself if he should do it or not and eventually decides it's the right course of action to take. So, he stretches his arm out a little more and curls two fingers around the same two on Alec's hand. His thumb gently smooths up to the knuckle and back down again, wanting—in some way—to help soothe that agitation into something better. ]
You could always look for something else. What would you like to do? [ A beat, then he holds his other hand up to still Alec from replying just yet. ] And nothing doesn't count. As determined as they are to keep us here, they aren't making it particularly easy to have some place to live. Or get money.

I don't know.
[ He chews on the inside of his lip for a few seconds, the lifts his eyes to Magnus'. Not having a path or a plan isn't a comfortable state of being for someone like Alec, but he doesn't try to lie about it. Not to Magnus. Not when they're trying to build a foundation of something here. ]
Being a Shadowhunter is all I know. That isn't going to make money here. But... [ He shrugs a shoulder. ] I don't know what does. Or how to do it. Are you enjoying your job?

( Well... he could if they were home and all that disaster with Valentine wasn't hanging over their collective heads. But. Expressly not thinking about that tonight. )
Magnus studies Alec for a few, passing moments. The look is almost clinical in his assessment and it's very, very clear the wheels are turning inside his head. True Alec doesn't have much experience in the mundane world, but Magnus does. And he knows Alec well enough, he thinks, to help him out in this. He blinks himself out of that slight trance with a deep inhale through his nose and then another easy smile on his lips. ]
Oh, I don't mind it. I could say it's beneath me, considering what I'm used to doing. But... [ he trails off, waving his free hand, ] I wouldn't be so bourgeoisie. People don't really seem to have a need for my particular talents as everyone has their own special something here. It will help in getting a place of my own sooner rather than later. [ He leans a little closer, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial kind of stage whisper; ] I've still yet to meet my roommates. I know they exist but...
[ He leans back and lifts his drink to come with him, which he takes a long sip of. The glass is set back down and he taps his finger against it briefly. ]
Perhaps something with animals. [ Way to switch topics, Magnus. ] For you, I mean. Less dealing with people. I'm certain they have animal shelters around here.

I haven't met mine either.
[ Though that isn't a complaint. Alec has never gone out of his way to meet his roommates and if he has his way, he'll continue never encountering them until he's able to leave the apartment. It's bad enough he has to work with mundanes. He doesn't want to live with them. ]
Can't say I'm torn up about it.
[ His dry tone shifts into one of slight surprise. ]
Animals? You think I should work in an animal shelter?
[ It isn't something he's ever considered, though he has to admit that he finds animals less exasperating than mundanes. He's never considered an animal shelter as a viable means of employment, but then he's never really thought about such things in the first place.
He takes another drink, shrugging as he swallows. It won't hurt to look into it. ]
I guess I can see if any of them are hiring. [ The less said about Alec on a job interview, the better. ] Have you looked into housing here? Is it doable on your salary?

[ To say the least. And, while they're here, shouldn't they both find something that they don't outright hate? This is a mere cosmic stopover somewhere. They should make the best of it. And, if he can help in any way, Magnus wants to aid in Alec's happiness. He deserves more than he likely thinks.
Magnus, too, is glad for the segue. He'd wanted to bring something up, but wasn't entirely sure how to do it. It's a bit of a delicate situation, but. Well. This kind of opportunity may never come up again. Neither one of them knows what the future holds. And for all that Alec is trying to go against the grains of Shadowhunter society... Well. Who knows if he'll ever leave the Institute beyond a night or two?
Clearing his throat he sits up a little more in his seat which draws him closer. He makes the attempt at appearing nonchalant, glancing down at their hands as he brushes his thumb over Alec's fingers. ]
Actually, I had a little of an idea about the housing situation. Of course, you are free to say no, there's no obligation, of course. But, I did have just a fleeting idea that perhaps we could get one together.
[ Is it moving too fast? It's probably moving too fast. ]

The question he'd asked about housing isn't a terribly serious one, but Magnus' reaction suggests that his answer will be. Alec straightens too, bringing the full force of his attention to bear on Magnus and whatever he's going to say. Maybe it's because he's a Shadowhunter and he's used to hearing dire, gloomy news, but he's expecting something he isn't going to like. What he gets instead is...
...Well, it's something he does like. And since it's something he both isn't expecting and doesn't quite know how to deal with like a man experienced in matters of the heart, he flushes a little and stammers. ]
Move in together? You and me? [ He winces a little, hearing how stupid the question is. ] I mean, are you—are you sure? [ Also stupid. He exhales. ] Yes? Yes. If you want to.
