we dance through the colors
WHO: Kotetsu and Barnaby
WHERE: Paris
WHEN: Spoopyween, aka a very special rabbit birthday
WHAT: Kotetsu attempts to give a good birthday present. In keeping with tradition, it goes embarrassingly wrong at every turn
WARNINGS: none I can think of!
[It was supposed to be simple. After his partner had surprised him with such a wonderful Disney weekend for his birthday, he'd been determined to do something equally special for Barnaby come October. He'd (gasp) made plans in advance. Made...plans using the lamest google search of all time, "fancy places to go", which is probably still open in a tab on Kotetsu's laptop if Barnaby ever has occasion to look at it, but hey, no one said he was an expert on the classy, fancy things in life. That was why they'd gone to Disneyland for his 39th birthday, after all.
But this is Kotetsu, and that means about 90% of whatever he tries to do is going to go Wrong in some manner or another, and their series of unfortunate events begins with getting bumped from their overbooked flight. Their luggage is the next casualty, having ended up on the flight they were bumped from instead, and several hours of waiting at the airport later, they arrive at the hotel only to find their reservation lost and stuck in a room with only a double bed and a pull-out futon.
The cherry on the cake is, of course, when they're fifteen minutes late to their dinner reservation because of helping out with trouble they'd found in the city when they were walking through the Champs Elysees and find their table has been given away, and it's too late to make reservations elsewhere.
Eventually, they finally wind up in some crowded, rowdy French combination cafe and pub with gaudy Halloween decorations strung up everywhere, and it's later on, with cheap wine and food that's not much more exciting than hamburgers and fries that he looks down at his glass, running a thumb around it]
...I'm sorry today ended up being such a disaster, Bunny. I'll make it up to you, though! I'm sure we can do something about the room, and there's supposed to be a really cool opera house around here that you can get a guided tour of, and--
[Please stop him from rambling for five thousand years, bani]

Kotetsu's words would probably be drowned out by the party-goers sitting around them if not for the fact they're sitting close to each other at a small, cozy table.]
Listen to yourself. [There's no ire in his words, and the wine must have gone to his head a little bit because he's actually having to hide his smile behind his glass] You go through the trouble of booking a transcontinental flight for two to Paris, of all places, make all these reservations, and now you're actually apologizing for it.
[A huge difference compared to the last big disaster Kotetsu put together for his birthday. It's amazing how much things have changed since the first time they met...]
Most of the things that went wrong today aren't even your fault. [Barnaby did, admittedly, chide him a little for not thinking to check into their flight online before leaving for the airport. But they so rarely do this sort of thing that he couldn't really hold it against Kotetsu.]
I never imagined we'd be spending my birthday together in Paris, let alone that my partner would be the one to arrange all of it. [His smile is starting to turn shy now, and he gazes out the window in an effort to play it off.] I'm...at a loss for words, quite frankly.

It's just...everything was supposed to be perfect, you know?
[He huffs, but he's not really irritated so much as disappointed. It's been a rough year, and things are always hard on his partner this time of year as it is.]
But on the bright side, it's technically still your birthday in the States! So it's totally legit to have a do-over tomorrow.

[As he speaks, he idly swirls the wine in his glass. Once takes another sip, he adds:]
There's one thing I've been meaning to ask you. [And now he's looking at Kotetsu with an arched eyebrow.] Why Paris?

The question drags him back to the present, however, and he blinks owlishly at his partner, as if uncertain how to answer the question.]
Uhhh...
[The thing about Kotetsu is that even when he puts thought and planning into something, he doesn't tend to think it all the way through and analyze it from all angles, the way Barnaby does. He hits on an idea he likes and then jumps on it, riding that wave all the way to the finish line, to really mix some metaphors.]
I mean, I know you like the classy sort of stuff, so I just sorta...googled for the fanciest vacations you could have?
[It's an embarrassing answer, honestly, but for once, it's the whole and genuine truth.]

Well, it's true I have certain tastes. [He's surprised to find his wine glass empty, although he doesn't signal the server for another one just yet.] At the same time, most travelers come to Paris for a different reason, you know. So, I was admittedly surprised by your choice. If you were just googling for ideas, though, then that makes sense.
[It makes sense, because, again...this is Kotetsu.]

[did he....did he forget something important.....shit, he probably did, didn't he. okay, play it cool, kaburagi, play it cool.]
...What, uh, what's that? 'Cause, you know, we still got the do-over tomorrow, so we can definitely squeeze it in somewhere!!
[Literally how have you ever reproduced, sir.]

Paris is a popular destination for couples. That's why it's commonly called the City of Romance. Actually, I'm a little surprised it didn't come up anywhere during your google search.

Man, I didn't even think about that....I just saw all the stuff about the art and the fancy buildings and the opera house and all that figured it was perfect, y'know??
[He does look kind of embarrassed, because duh, Kaburagi. Even you should know that?? The thought that Barnaby might have wanted it to be romantic won't occur to him until later.]
